I found a pair of used KRK VXT 6 for $450 and can get a pair of Yamaha HS8 new for about the same price. I'm torn at the moment. The Yamahas sounded really good at the store and are new w warranty, but the reviews on the KRK VXT 6 are great and Anderton seems to like them.

You won't go wrong with either one, assuming the used ones haven't been abused. I strongly suggest listening to them both, preferably side by side with the same source material. One will probably "click" with you more than the other.
 
Search on reviews, bearing in mind the source...I saw one speaker review from someone who lived in the basement of his parents house and was a student. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I question how many speakers he's heard in his life 

AndertonJust FYI KRK monitors have a huge following among hip-hop engineers/producers, I've been told it's because of the bass translation being accurate. Also very commonly used by rock guys. Also I've reviewed some speakers that are competitive with KRK (obviously I won't name names) and advertised for studio use, but have a significant bass bump around 100 Hz. That definitely flatters the low end, but if you mix on them, it's a mixed bag because the bass will sound right on something like Beatz headphones but not on more accurate listening systems.
 

I don't listen to hip-hop (or rap) but it's interesting that genre prefers them. 
I haven't had any ear fatigue on my yellow cones yet.
I'm not a GC fan but there's one a couple miles away and I had quiet room (very rare there) to assess which ones appealed to my ears.
 
I still use my Tascam S1010m's (I purchased in 1987 or so) as my second monitoring/mixing source.
Jeez...those puppies along with the 4410's are from the Pleistocene Epoch.
 
I'm getting the impression that I'm a minority of one because I've never used headphones during the mixing stage.
Only for tracking and soloing a track looking for artifacts or vocal fur balls with my singing (figure of speech only) and then I'll confirm the mix on other mediums.
I haven't determined if there's a 100hz bump on my KRK's.

OK, are you ready for this? The guy with the KRK VXT 6s stood me up. What a *^%(-+#, right?
 
But as luck would have it, I just got a pair of brand new KRK VXT 8s for $396 out the door!!!! It was the last pair.

I think you might be talking abot the KRK Rockits. The VXT line is a whole different animal and not in the same price range as the Yamahas. I do really like the HS8s, though. But the deal I got on those KRKs is insane.

I have a pair of Rokit 5's that I've been using forever but they're a bit lacking in midrange detail. These days I use my HS7's for just about everything and now use the Rokit 5's for a sanity check. I want to get a pair of MixCubes eventually as a 3rd opinion.
If I could have only one pair of monitors at that price point, I'd probably get the Yamahas.

Well, one thing's for sure: If you don't like them, you'll have no trouble unloading them for the same price as what you paid. And yes...the Rockits and VXTs are very different animals, hence the price difference.

Got them today!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the fact that commercially released music sounds great on them and my own mixes sound dull, unbalanced and pathetic, then they're awesome!!! Lol! They are huge! The pic is squashed and doesn't really convey their size.
