So set your budget first, set your requirements second, if they don't match start again. Audio quality is so good on all but the bottom of the barrel that it comes down to degrees of difference, or maybe even just personal taste. So if you can, listen to the candidates. And of course ask here and elsewhere about drivers and support.

Hard to get the best, almost as hard to go wrong... so my goal was to avoid going wrong, and stop worrying about the best... at least until the meds wear off!

Agreed almost 100% except I'd say draw up requirements first.

I have to say, I've tested a lot of interfaces...and I don't mean just listened to them, but did signal analysis for THD, crosstalk, signal-to-noise, phase consistency, took the units apart to see what components they were using, and a lot more. Generated a whole bunch of fancy graphs

My conclusion is that no one interface hits all those sweet spots. I've found interfaces with really low distortion but relatively high crosstalk or vice-versa. I've tested preamps that people think sound fabulous but have significant second-harmonic distortion - but they might like the preamps BECAUSE of the second-harmonic distortion, not in spite of it. I've tested interfaces with great hardware and not-so-great drivers, ones with superb circuit board layouts and others with hardly any ground planes at all.

Fortunately, the level of technology these days is such that even the "glue" components being used are high quality. The statement "Hard to get the best, almost as hard to go wrong..." is spot on.

Finally, I'm expecting announcements at AES that I think we will be exciting to Sonar users.

Another +1 for Focusrite.

I'm still running a Saffire Pro26IO which I bought in 2007 and it has never let me down ever.
Great pre's, 8 of them, 16 channels available on ADAT, another 2 on SPDIF, 2 headphone outs.

It will have to break down before I replace it

I didn't feel anything was wrong with my Focusrite Saffire Pro 10. Then I got my RME Babyface as a portable alternative and saw the light...

It's just a new feeling of solidity and dependability! No hidden buffers, no nonsense. RME is probably the pro audio manufacturer I hold in the highest regard. No talk of audio voodoo or esoterism, just plain old fuctionality!

I've just gone through the new interface process.

I considered Focusrite very seriously, but ended up going for an RME UFX. I need line inputs more than I do lots of mic pres, and if I need more mic pres or other ins and outs the UFX has ADAT so no problem. I have to say I'm impressed with it so far, though I'm still getting my head around some aspects. Round trip latency over USB is superb.

RME are in a different price bracket to most of the Saffire/Scarlett range though if that's a factor (which it always is).

Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

My mate has a tascam uh7000 it sounds heavenly but the latency is far from great and the drivers are a bit lacking the the options department. For instance you cannot even change the samplerate from the driver panel.

He also has a fireface (800 I think) which is better in terms of latency and drivers but not as nice sounding, although its splitting hairs really.

Well I've been expecting Tascam interfaces to at least stop shipping with Cubase LE and start including Sonar.
I guess Tascam still needs to focus on writing better drivers and then they will take off and blow Focusrite away. I have both a Tascam and a Focusrite. I certainly will say the Tascam has much better pre amps that you can hit harder. They are quieter too. Unless the Scarletts use a lesser quality pre than the upper end models, I for one do not think they make good pre amps at all. Just so so.
Just about every manufacture has some sort of hipe about their pre amps. I think they all come out of a half dozen crates in a big factory in China.
The crates are marked :
$3 pre amp
$6 pre amp
$12 Pre Amp
$24 Pre amp and so on.

+1 for the Octa Capture.  It has always worked well for me, plus I can interface it with my VS 100.

Win 10 Pro x64, 32Gb DDR3 ram, Sonar Platinum, Cubase 9.5, Mackie MCU Pro, Cakewalk VS 100, Roland Octa-Capture,  A 800 Pro, Carver M-1.5t amp & C4000 pre amp, various mics, drums and brass instruments.

And away we go!

there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
