Sonar Platinum crash creating new track template - CWBRN-31038

(The problem form does not have a Platinum id, so it is logged as Producer.)
  1. Load Reaktor on an instrument track
  2. Load a Reaktor synth Icon in the browser view, make it default icon for Reaktor in browser
  3. Change the track icon - same icon as prev step
  4. Save the new track as a Track template
  5. delete the track and synth in browser
  6. load the new track template - crash occurs here after the new track loads.
This is reproducible - the same thing happens when I set up my other soft synth track templates.
After the crash and reload of Sonar, the new track template loads OK.

Have you been able to successfully save the template without changing the icons?  In what directory are the icons (for Reaktor) located?  I am curious about the size of the icon too.  Perhaps we can narrow it down and find where this happens.

    Kind regards,

These icons were made for Sonar X3 and I moved them in the Track Icons/Soft Synths folder in the Content folder.
I don't think I had any issue with them in X3.

It also doesn't matter if I change the icon, the crash occurs when I save other soft synths with no icon. I just made icons for all my synths to find the tracks better. I'm saving to the standard track templates folder. Note that these are track templates (cwx) not project templates.

The track color is that of the Master Bus, if that matters. I think I have 'color follow bus' checked somewhere.

This is not a big issue, as the templates are still saved OK, but the crash is bothersome.

The Fault reporter launches, but it doesn't seem to be able to send the data - it fails with some connection problem.

This is all happening on a new 8.1 laptop I just bought. A completely clean install of Platinum. I installed everything from CCC using the default paths. Otherwise Platinum appears quite stable, but it's still early in the setup phase on this new laptop. I have a lot of stuff to try.

It also doesn't matter if I load the just-saved track template. After saving a new track template, any other track template load causes the same crash.

But if I close Sonar and re-open, all load fine.

These new templates are saved in the template folder with me as the file owner (I am using the account name 'Jim' but as an administrator). The other templates there are from the install and they are owned by Administrator.

    Hi arachnaut-

Very similar issue here, but I changed the default track color rather than the track icon, so maybe it's more to do with deleting & loading a new track template using the same synth? Dunno.

    1. Deleted the synth (Strum Acoustic) in the Browser and chose delete associated tracks. This was inserted from a track template, BTW.
    2. Changed track default color in Preferences.
    3. Loaded the Strum Acoustic template.

Crash. The problem reporter had the same issue you reported downthread: couldn't connect or whatever. When I went to fill out the problem report I couldn't select Platinum, as you said.  I do still have the .dmp files.

    Thanks-

It may have something to do with track color.

When X3 came out and track colors were introduced, I reported that they were not saved in track templates.
Seemed like an easy fix, but I was told it was actually a bit difficult and it did not get done in X3.

    Hi arachnaut-

I guess I'll create a new problem report(?)  It seems like these are closely related, though, doesn't it?

    Hi-

Okay. I thought it was similar enough to bring up in this thread for discussion, but my bad. I'll post a new thread about mine, which was assigned CWBRN-31096.

I went through problem reports forum and saw two issues I could not reproduce in Dorchester, so maybe this is a regression issue:

I also had a repeatable crash when inserting a track template; it contained 5 synths ... crashed a second time when I tried again ... then it worked, but when I reopened the project and double clicked the synth to open it, it crashed again ... strangely enough, after a save it worked

I had not deleted the same synth prior to loading the template (I may have deleted another one in the first go around, but not in the second one ... so I doubt this matters)

it seems like something related to track templates is broken (could be some loading functionality that was adapted for mix recall that is not fully backward compatible with the track template functionality???)

no crash dump files created on my DAW, however, so I can't upload anything ...

This definitely a new issue in Dorchester because I had used the same templates without problems up until I installed Dorchester (no changes made to the templates)

@FreeFlyBertl in regards to my previous comment I was specifically talking about the OP's exact steps to repro #1 and #6.
That issue appears fixed (from my end). I am being specific rather than generic. Maybe somebody can confirm

There is a new track template issue (probably a new regression issue when this one was fixed) with different steps which is being discussed here which needs moving into problem reports (has been validated by more than one person):
    http://forum.cakewalk.com/Dorchester-Drum-maps-with-track-templates-crash-Sonar-m3217582.aspx

I'm treating it differently because it appears to be a different issue (and it helps avoid confusion). Yes track templates appear to be still buggy but this specific issue appears fixed.

    Thanks...
