[Solved] 2nd Disappointment - N key for Snap Enable/Disable Still Not Working in PRV
I seem to remember that this is working for some But it was not working in X3 for me and still is not in Platinum... I double checked and the key is assigned to the enable task, but it is not working... Keni

You've mentioned this repeatedly, and I've never been able to reproduce what I think it is you're trying to do. I need a better description of the problem. Can you describe exactly what you want to do and what you try to do to accomplish it?

Thanks Craig... A simple thing that has always worked before ... I'm just trying to use the N key to enable/disable snap while editing MIDI... It is still set to the default which is what I want (thankfully the Bakers changed the default key back to N) but it does nothing in the PRV... I tried manually setting the command back in X3e, but that didn't help either... I must mouse my way back and forth... Painstaking for the editing I do... Keni

Hey Keni, the N key has always worked for me in PRV to toggle on/off snap. (X3 and Platinum) I had a look, and with no project loaded, my N key (in Preferences, Keyboard shortcuts) says "Not Assigned" When I load a project the N key assignment becomes "Snap Toggle Extended" Is this the same for you ? If you do a search for "Snap Toggle Extended" key assignment, there isn't one Makes me wonder if the N key shortcut is a setting saved within projects ?

Hi noynekker... Yes, it's the same for me though I haent looked without a project loaded.. There is not a snap toggle extended, but there is a snap enable/disable available in PRV. I tried that too, but it didn't change anything... Keni

Keni, just to clarify . . . when you hit the N key, does the Snap module on your control bar highlight, or not ?

Are you talking about how close you have to move the note to the snap boundary to get it to stick? If so that's a magnetic strength issue which you can fix by right-clicking the snap button and increasing the strength. If you're talking about adjusting the prv snap settings independently then you'd look in the prv header under options/snap settings. If you're talking about snap settings not being retained at different zoom levels, then you click the snap value selector and uncheck smart snap. Honestly I'm with Craig and not sure what your exact problem is but I'm going to guess it's one of the three above.

I'm sorry if I gavent been clear... I thought this pretty easy to understand... The N key has been returned as the default keyboard shortcut to enable/disable snap to grid. It is working fine in TV, but not working in PRV... When I press the N key in PRV, the enable button does not change nor does the actual change of snap enable/disable... I don't use th PRV in multidock... It opens as a separate full screen PRV...I forget the 3 letter acronym for this "mode" Keni

Ah! The default in PRV is to follow global snap settings. I always use this mode because it's less for me to keep track of. To get a shortcut key to work for prv snap go into preferences/keyboard shortcuts then in area dropdown select piano roll view and bind a shortcut to prv snap override.

Thanks swamptooth... I tried this previously and it still didn't work... I'm not trying to use any particular snap settings... That's yet another issue. I'm only talking about enabling/disabling snap while I'm working in the PRV... I often need to snap a note's start tine, but then wish to make the length shorter than the next snap value and right now I go a bit batty needing to mouse back and forth every few seconds... Ever since X1 when we were limited to a global snap, I've had various issues with the new snap arrangement. Most of the problems have been addressed, but not this one... My other related snap issue is that when disabling the PRV snap, my grid reverts to global snap... I have not tested this issue in 2015 yet... Keni

I have not tested that yet in 2015, but it happened with new projects in X3... I'll do my best to look into this aspect in 2015 when next on my generator time (limited electricity here right now) Thanks for this idea... Keni

Per the help files the piano roll view follows the global snap and the toggle on/off, it has independent snap resolution when the little grid box is on in the upper right hand corner. The grid box in prv does not turn snap on/ off ,it just pertains to resolution in the prv. I tried the N key here and it turns global snap on/off in either tv or prv. If smart grid is enabled the resolution changes based on vertical zoom or so it appears to me. Maybe you could try unassigning the N key and then reassigning to see if that will fix it.

Thanks teego... That is what I exoected, but it has not been working since they changed the snap shortcut key to N as I wanted (and others of course) Part of the problem is that there is no option for the default snap enable key (snap extended).. I did try to do this in x3e... And I will try again in 2015... Keni

OK...FWIW it DOES work the way you want and there is no bug. But it's a two-step process to set up. The top image shows that MIDI snap is off in the TV and PRV. The MIDI snap value is 1/8 and the TV snap value is 1/4. Clicking on the "checkerboard" to the upper right in the PRV unfolds where you right-click on the snap field to determine the snap value. The bottom image shows what happens after typing N. It now toggles snap on for both TV and PRV. You can tell because the gray/light blue buttons become bright blue. If you type N again it goes back to the top image. There is something you're not doing, but I'm not sure what it is...

Check under edit-preferences and key bindings and make sure the N is connected to snap on/off. There is a separate area in there for track view and piano roll view,it may be linked for one and not the other. Edit: Scratch that I don't think it works the way I described above.

But the N key is not doing that here... When the PRV is open, pressing N does nothing...
When you say it "does nothing," what happens to the colors shown in the screen shot? Does the TV color toggle between gray and bright blue, but not the PRV? Does the PRV snap value field stay stuck on light blue or bright blue? Clearly "N" DOES work because it works for everyone else, in X3 and Platinum. Do you have PRV Snap Override bound to something in keyboard bindings and are hitting it accidentally? Try importing the SONAR Default Key Assignments so you have the standard keyboard shortcuts. If you have custom bindings, export them first under their own name in case you want to re-import them.

Thanks teego... I've done that... I even tried to unbind it from the default (which it really doesn't) and re-bind it.... Still no go... Here's an interesting little extra I just stumbled on that's new to 2015... There is an available command in the PRV named PRV Snap Override... I believe this only enables/disables the PRV setttings and changing the system to use the Global Snap setting for PRV... It is currently assigned to Alt-Shift-N and appears to work, but the PRV Snap buttons in the upper right of the PRV frame have a problem... Instead of closing down the options and showing the greyed out grid, it leaves the screen... first leaving behind a highlighted image of the current PRV-Snap setting's value (such as 1/16), then a repeated use of the ALT-Shift-N command makes even that disappear.... It can be brought back into view/access by closing the PRV and re-opening it... Something going on there... But I don't personally have any need of ever having the PRV follow my TV settings.... But still nothing makes the N key work in PRV... Nothing I change in key bindings... and new or old project (Did I mention I tried that too?)... Keni

I was messing around with Sonar trying to reproduce the issue and somewhere along the way using "N" to toggle snap stopped working entirely, I don't know what happened or how to set it back to Snap Toggle Extended because that option isn't available. I had to go into the Preferences and manually bind "N" to Snap To Grid On/Off. After manually binding "N" I noticed something odd: http://screencast.com/t/yi0oSJqpC As you can tell I have snap on in the Control Bar and PRV, notes snap properly as they should. I toggle snap off with "N" and the change is visually reflected in the Control Bar but not the PRV, notes still snap in the PRV. While snap is off in the Control Bar I hide and unhide the PRV snap settings and it now visually reflects that the snap is off, notes are no longer snapping in the PRV. I toggle snap on with "N" and the change is visually reflected in the Control Bar but again it isn't visually reflected in the PRV, but this time the notes react properly to any snap toggle changes even though the PRV isn't properly visually reflecting when snap is on. I now hide and unhide the PRV snap settings and it visually reflects that snap is on, notes snap properly. I toggle snap off with "N" and the change is visually reflected in the Control Bar but not the PRV and notes aren't snapping. Now we're back to where we started... The PRV is only responding to the "N" snap toggle when you hide and unhide the PRV snap settings while the snap is off in the Control Bar. I can't imagine Sonar is supposed to work like this, so I'm considering this a bug.

Did anyone try my suggestion in this post? The N thing has always worked for me and apparently for others. Something is happening in individual setups. Importing the default key bindings might be a good place to start.

Yeah I already did that, initially it didn't change anything. After a few tries it fixed the issue with "N" not toggling the snap on/off. But the fact that I was messing around with Sonar trying to produce the same issue the OP is having and suddenly "N" somehow stopped working without me touching any of the key bindings or preferences proves that the OP's issue is in fact being caused by Sonar. I'll mess around with it some more at some point to figure out what's causing the problem, but I'm positive it has nothing to do with individual setups.
