Total Newb; usb guitar|No Sound|HELP!!!

Yep; total newb to Cakewalk sonar 3 (Studio) and for that matter any daws at all, always been an analogue person... been working with the software for a few weeks now and while my main focus has been learning the interface, built in features (even got the cakewalk 2.0 walkthru) I am still roughing with a few things i hope someone could help with. I have a simple USB to guitar cable which when plugged in produces no sound?? I Even after much trial and reading still can't get the damn thing to work? Its reading as a 'C-media USB Headphone set' (Generic USB audio) under my PC sound settings (Windows OS 7) and when played I can see my PC is seeing it via the volume control but I can't hear it in the program. If anyone can help figure out my dilemma it would be greatly appreciated! Much Tkx!

Welcome!

Can Sonar see your driver (in Sonar preferences)?

Did you add an audio track to your project?

Is input echo on?

Sorry to say that that thing will probably not work with Sonar. It might work with Audacity.
Sonar needs ASIO drivers. You'll need to start shopping for an Audio Interface.
If your real broke and can't afford the $100-$200 for an interface then try asio4all. ( can't believe I said that :? ) But you'll have timing and latency issues at best.

Thanks for the response, i can't thank you both enough, I have it working, turned on the input echo(doh)... I will be looking into to all the fun :addons: as I become more acquainted with the software and will be certain to have many other questions to fill in the gaps! Glad to know this is a active forum!

As you are new, I would recommend joining Berklee's "Introduction to Music Production" course (free). It is loaded with useful information about DAWs in general which will save you much pain and suffering as you learn.

This course runs every 4 months (I think), and is going on now... you would not be able to take it for "grade," but you can easily join it and download all of the video lectures by right clicking and saving them to your computer.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Thkx for the information, that will be very useful! The more information I have the better. Especially since i noticed a lag in my guitar while figuring things out tonight. I did adjust the buffer which helped but there was still a delay in the sound...

I sent a quick email to the person in our class who had put together very detailed notes from this course and asked her if I could share them with everyone since she did such a wonderful job. I posted them in a new thread, so now if you join late you can have all the lectures and notes from the class.

You just mentioned the reason why I am saying in the end you will want to buy a proper audio interface. You will have system latency using generic drivers. You see once you get going what I'm talking about.
With windows and Sonar it works best with well written ASIO drivers. All else will perform poorly. Timing issues , out of sync tracks and latency are a few of the issues you will experience until you purchase a audio interface with good drivers.
You don't have to take my word but I am sincerly trying to help you have a better experiance with your new hobby. That cable was just a sad waste of money.
