[CWBRN-32132][FIXED] Can't drag MIDI clips from Sonar Platinum Track View to the Windows Desktop

I can no longer drag MIDI clips from Sonar Platinum Track View to the Windows Desktop - no file appears on the desktop.

Dragging the same clip from the same project works when the project is opened in X3.

Works fine here.  Just tried it in response to another thread.

Tried it in X1, X2, X3 and Platinum.

System specific?

Hang on - I have an active thread in Sonar forum for midi drag and drop, and I am continuing to test for a theory I have.

Firstly, I believe that if you hold CTRL when you drag, you CAN successfully copy a midi track to the desktop.

My theory is that it is Windows behavior that is dependent on literally what disk drive the source is associated with, and what drive the target folder is located (in your case the desktop folder).

I will follow up in a bit, as testing is still ongoing at the moment, and I have chicken on the grill to go feast on.   mmmmmmmm

I just tested this on my machine and get the same behavior. I cannot drag/drop MIDI from SONAR Platinum to the desktop either running as administrator or not, using the CTRL key during the drag or not. The + icon appears over the desktop in all cases, but nothing is ever copied. Project files and the desktop are on two different drives.

Also tested in X3, and functions as expected (X3 not run as administrator, no CTRL button required).

There is additional discussion in the other thread in Sonar forum thread:

I may end up merging these, but for the moment am thinking we are almost done here and there both.

Need more coffee - was up until 6 AM.

As well as not being able to drag MIDI files at all, I have also seen the behaviour where dragging the file to the desktop has successfully created a file but removed it from my project. I don't know what the circumstances are that make Sonar choose between those 2 circumstances.

(The stuff about Windows default behaviour is a distraction - Sonar can do what it chooses with a drag and drop operation, and doesn't need to attempt to emulate a Windows file move operation.)

We still need a CWBRN number in order for this issue to progress (see earlier post). Thanks.

I have generated a problem report CWBRN-32132 "Dragging a MIDI clip from track view to Desktop does not create a file" that appears to be the same problem reported in the OP.

Repro Steps:
  1. Create new project
  2. Drag a MIDI clip from the MIDI Groove Clips folder in the Browser to the track view
  3. Select the MIDI clip on the newly created track and drag it from the track view to the desktop
Expected Results:
Step 2: A new MIDI track is created in the track view containing a MIDI clip
Step 3: A MIDI file is created on the Windows desktop

Actual Results:
Step 2: A new MIDI track is created with the MIDI clip. [PASSED]
Step 3: The mouse cursor changes to a pointer with a square cursor and a "+" sign after it leaves the Sonar window, but no MIDI file is created when the cursor is released on the Windows Desktop. [FAILED]

My Sonar Platinum install uses the default locations on the C: drive and my Windows Desktop is also on the C: drive.  I have also attempted this procedure using Admin privileges with the same FAILED results.

Drag and drop of Audio files from the Track view to the Windows Desktop works correctly in both 32 bit and 64 bit Sonar Platinum.

MIDI Clip drag and drop from the track view fails in both 32 and 64 bit versions of Sonar Platinum.
Sonar X3e performs a successful drag and drop to the Desktop.
A test project and an animated GIF demonstrating the mouse cursor behavior were attached to the problem report.

While this bug is awaiting being fixed, a workaround is to drag the MIDI clip into the Media Browser. Then you can open that location in Windows Explorer and get the clip from there.

And, I found success (might have been only in X3e, but could have been in Platinum too), with holding CTRL while dragging to the desktop.

So, give a try at either CTRL + dragging, or dragging to the Media Browser per the earlier post above mine, while waiting for the fix to make it into a release.
