Are you using SONAR X1 LE? What steps have you taken so far to try and record? Have you set-up your duo capture? Are you using ASIO? Let us know and we can try to help.

No one said it would be easy! Just kidding! There are a number of videos on youtube or check out the support section here at cakewalks site. There are some helpful vids in the Sonar University section. If you want more focused responses we need to know what exactly is your setup as far as computer and interface. Also, what seems to be the problem at hand. Sonar is a very complex program and takes a while to come up to speed. But, once you get the hang of it I think you will be glad you took the time.
By the way, welcome to the forum and please make yourself at home.

Just remember that SONAR has the equivalent functionality of a recording studio that if it was hardware, would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars not all that long ago. That's a lot of gear! And they had engineers to run it.

The first crucial step is to connect the interface to your computer and make sure SONAR recognizes it. Not much is going to happen until that's sorted out.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

There is sonar power which is very useful at describing uses.

Help file.

Practice.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Hmm when I was a tape op years ago I had a similar question. The answer was just make the ruddy coffee, roll up a fat one and find out yourself. Basically RTFM you are on your own. How things have changed...

Have you installed it yet and at least played a demo project?

Sonar is quite powerful, but you can get up and going by following tutorials, books, and/or videos that will walk you through quite a few of the ways of being productive with Sonar.

Check out the included tutorials, look at the Cake TV videos, and consider picking up one of the written books on using Sonar.  There are also countless additional videos on YouTube on most aspects of using Sonar.

These forums are also incredibly useful - and folks will bend over backwards to help - as long as they also see you actively looking at putting in the time and effort on watching the videos, using the help documentation, running the tutorials, etc.....

Also, please be aware that using the search function of these forums generally doesn't work well at all, at this point in time, and most folks learn to use Google to search for things in the forums, like how to do something, or seeing if there is a bug with some aspect of the version of Sonar you are running.

I tend to use a Google search control parameter to tell it to only search for things within the Sonar forums, and that greatly reduces the results returned to only be ones from the forums.

To do that, type your search terms after first typing the following into the Google search box or just up in the address bar of a browser window: site:forum.cakewalk.com

So a couple of examples, using that search construct:

site:forum.cakewalk.com platinum now time marker
site:forum.cakewalk.com notation editor bugs
site:forum.cakewalk.com insert measures

Best of luck to you.  Welcome to the forums, and to Sonar.

Come on gentlemen. I had played out live for years, had done bedroom recording with whatever I could get my hands on, done live recording with bands I was in, made sure the mixer and monitors was working and set up. I mean I was the "go to guy" for my small group.

When i got Win95 and Cw, I was f'n lost!! I had no clue what so ever how to get my sound into the box, let alone manipulate it once it was in there!!

Give the guy a break!!

To OP, do the tutorials that come with the program. Then at least you will be familiar with the terms so that we can ask you questions and you will know what we are talking about.

Good luck. It is worth the effort!

I feel your pain, believe me.  If you're new to recording, as I was when I made the leap to Sonar Studio, there is much to learn.  I just do basic recording, my vocals and my guitars, so my setup is probably similar to yours.  I have an audio interface and a laptop.

Conceptually it's basically inputs and outputs, but the lingo is unique and the directions are not always clear.

Like most robust software requires, you do have to configure Sonar, or at least verify how Sonar is configured.

It can be a challenge to ask and answer specific questions on this forum, but the people here will help you:)

Don't give up.

It always the same with software: once you know your way around everything is easy, but the wealth of options, knobs and buttons can be quite overwhelming and distracting.

Stick to a simple tasks and work yourself thru ... don't get distracted by everything else there is ...

So check if it is configured properly i.e. do you get sound out to your headphones? do you get a signal in from your guitar? can you record that? can you apply some effects to that? can drag a drum loop in to play along? yes times 5? well, you're good to go ... the pages in the manual to accomplish this are only a few, but I recommend taking time to read them ...

I am "assuming" the OP is a copy of SONAR X1 LE. IIRC, that program did not have updates with it, so may be troublesome, especially being a new user.

My recommendation would be to register SONAR X1 LE so you qualify for discounted upgrades, then look into something simpler like Music Creator 7 (I believe is $19.99 as an upgrade). This has the same audio engine as the newer SONAR, just not as many features (which being new you would never miss... yet).

As far as tutorials, google is your best friend, and is easiest to start with tasks you want to do (keep them simple at first). The "Get Started" link under CakeTV on this page is also a good place to start.

Also, if you want to search the forums (which is full of useful content), is easiest to use google and preface your search terms with "site:forum.cakewalk.com" in the search box.

As far as videos, I watched the Groove 3 stuff, looked up stuff in the manual. attended Sonar University, came here and asked dumb questions, and now understand enough to know I need to watch the SWA X2 vids which, if I had it to do over again, is where I should have started. Groove 3 is nice and quick for the stuff it teaches, but it LEAVES a lot to be desired for the raw beginner. SWA holds your hand more, and seemingly touches on every thing one needs. It IS  50 10 minute vids...I have committed to watching them all this month, and hopefully much sooner...

I am not a tutorial guy. I may have to become one, but I'm like Al Iverson. Practice?  it's practice, man!

I think the problem is that entering with a negative tone about needing a "college course" and calling SONAR a "monstrosity" when it's actually a sophisticated and well thought out piece of software kinda gets peoples' dander up. Those who come in simply asking for help, instead of making negative value judgments about a program they clearly know little about, are more likely to get a positive reception. Also, previous "one post + agenda" people do very similar posts, which muddies the waters for legitimate users. I've been fooled a few times.

That said, I agree that he needs more time to cool down and re-enter the dialog if he does actually does want to learn the program.

One thing members should think about is that this forum is unusual because a reply will be forthcoming quickly. We expect this here but in most other forums one can wait days for a response. A brand new member may not know this and post and come back some time later.

If we assume that they are not interested in a solution we do ourselves and the poster a disservice. If a dialog can not at any time be establish its a loss to all of us. We loose nothing if we show patience.

Best

No attack intended, only that we should see what the guy knows and doesn't know before flooding him with stuff that won't help. Granted, 14 hours may not be enough time to wait (19 now), but whenever I really want to know something, I tend to check for updates or subscribe to the thread so I can respond. That's just me.

I think the same could be said about Photoshop, Visio, and a number of software packages.

A quick start guide that shows how to arm, record, and playback a track would be helpful.  Doesn't Sonar have a tutorial like that?  Of course, setting up the interface is always going to vary depending on what you bought.
