Do you think I will run into trouble by having a blank disk drive to begin with after the new partitions are installed?  I have my 8.1 key in case, just hoping it will do the install/update without having to use it.  I could always do a reinstall of 8.1 and upgrade from there.

I read in this thread that you had to do an upgrade install first and then do a clean install later. However I didn't do a clean install so don't have any experience with this approach.

If you want a clean install the quickest and simplest way is to do a full install of your previous OS (W7 ^) using the format tool that is provided in that operation...dont bother installing anything else just make sure it is activated, then do your install with your W10 media and do a "Keep Nothing" install.

One "optimization" you might want to disable is this one.
By default Windows shares your windows update downloads over the internet (like bittorrent). For a DAW you probably want to turn off this behavior to prevent unwanted background internet activity. I've set mine to only share it on my local network, not the internet.

SSD installation ( the way which worked for me) , installing directly to SSD was dropped constantly an error after the first rebooting, so

-downloaded the ISO from
-wrote it to an empty DVD (from USB it not worked) with Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool
-installed from it to a non SSD drive (created an empty partition used its format tool )
-finally migrated it into the original SSD dirve with Paragon Migrate OS to SSD™ 4.0

now I'm happy :)

Hmmmm. I updated two computers to Windows 10. The one with a non-SSD updated through Windows update. The one with an SSD would not update. I followed the various troubleshooting guides and re-downloaded the update at least 4 times. I didn't realize this was because it was an SSD. Interesting.

The way I upgraded it was to use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. That upgraded Windows 10 directly onto my SSD.

For those that have upgraded or considering upgrading, the Windows 10 forum has lots of good info and help.
www.tenforums.com

I have my 8.1 upgraded and after Roland got their drivers upgraded everything is working OK, including my VST add-ons such as Ozone 5. iLok is working OK.

When I record, I disable the NIC (Ethernet adapter) so I'm off line.  The prevents possible interference to Sonar from network activity.

I'm in the Windows "Insider program" and have had Win10 Preview (Beta) versions for quite a while.  The only thing that put a kink in things was my Roland Studio-Capture and Octa-Capture installed OK in an early Win 10 Preview version but in the final 10240 version they would not install.  I had been going around "fat dumb and happy" assuming they were OK.  Apparently the early Win 10 Beta versions were more Win 8.1 than 10 and Roland drivers did install and work.  I never checked them after that until 10240 version (the "final" version).

Windows 10 reportedly said to be running on 67 millions PC's already.  MS is looking at one billion over the next 2-3 years. I think MS will get that within the first year. I already have several PC's running Win 10 myself. People sure do love a freebie!

Are there any other audio optimizations to perform on 10? I had a lot of things tweaked in 8.1 and 7 that did greatly improve the performance of my audio interfaces and the computers.  I am very pleased with the performance so far in 10!

Sonar Platinum, Sonar X3e, Sonar X2a , Sonar X1 Expanded and 8.5.3 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 10 on a Toshiba P75-A7200 Laptop with i7 @ 2.4 quad and 8 gigs of RAM and secondary WD 1 Tb drive, Windows 10 desktop, Asus i5 @ 3.2 quad, 12 gigs RAM, 1 Tb drive, 1 500 gig drive, MOTU 24io, 2 Roland Studio Captures, Saffire 6 USB for laptop, Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 mixer, Alesis Monitor 2s, Event BAS 20/20s, Roland Micro-Monitor BA-8s, and 45 years worth of collecting FX, Mics, Amps, Guitars, and Keyboards!

Thanks to everyone here for all of the good advice on how to proceed with the clean install of Win 10 and some of the changes to sharing.

It is rare indeed to have a poster with an ulterior motive on these forums set to the dark side.

Oh and if you want to stop Windows update :
start a CMD app (Windows key + X - Command Prompt ADMIN) then type - net  stop wuauserv  to restart same command except replace stop with start

I'm till testing out windows 10 on my old Daw computer. Its a core 2 quad extreme with 8 gig of ram and my old hard drive in it.

Windows 10 installed fine I had to update the driver for the old video card.

Then I installed my old delta 66 and installed the newest drivers using compatibility mode and tested all is working great. I even installed my motu fastlane usb midi using compatibility and it tested fine as well.

I loaded up an audio only project on X2 (because I have not updated the old computer) and it was able to play without clicks etc at the 128 buffer setting.

By the way, you don't need to have the windows key to activate it. After doing the update process from a previous version, you can do a clean install as mentioned earlier. When the screen comes that asks you for the product key just hit skip for now. Windows will activate itself after finishing the installation based on the update version you did earlier.

Have fun

I don't think this has been mentionned, but I found to my surprise, at some point during the upgrade from W7, W10 had activated on-board sound (in the BIOS) and installed Realtek drivers.

Had to disable then un-install.

Other than that, succesful upgrade.

ANd it cured my horrendous latency problem. So thanks MS !

Cheers,
Jerry
