A doctor of mine once said I had Borderline Personality Disorder. They are clever these people as I'd never have known living on the edge of the County would have caused long-term issues. As for coping and dealing with highly dysfunctional forum interactions I would suggest plenty of practice until you get really good at them, then suddenly, before you know it all your forum interactions will be highly dysfunctional without needing to even think about it.

sharke There are some complete and utter loons out there who cannot handle anyone with a different opinion than their own. Every now and then I'll make some seemingly innocuous comment under a news story in Facebook and have some complete stranger message me with the most horrific abuse and/or threat of death. And these are people using their real accounts with their photo on and everything! Some of them even have their kids in the photo. Imagine that, sending people death threats using a photo of your kids to represent yourself. Yet there it is...
It never ceases to amaze me what people will post on FB. I rarely post anything original, but it is mostly non-controversial, friendly, and positive.

Hi- What amazes me is how negative and hateful and overtly racist and mysogynistic so many posts are. Here's one of my favorites from another DAW forum: "Since women make up half the human race, and are potentially a huge market, should we try to recruit them by offering them a simpler product?" That's not even the most mysogynistic post over there -- not by a long stretch. That one (I think) was just ignorant. I think the "It's only the Internet" argument is a very weak one at this point. It might have made sense 10 or 15 years ago, but "Internet bullying" is now a real thing with real consequences. I'm concerned that this so-called anonymity brings out the worst in people. I don't think I've led a particularly sheltered life, but I had no idea how many really awful people there are out there -- or maybe they're just the most vocal. If true, that raises the question why. -Susan

There is no "anonymity" on the internet, and that is the worst and stupidest fantasy for anyone to think and believe. These folks are on the way to shooting themselves in the foot, and what you want to do in these situations is give them a mirror, so they can take a really good look, and then go find out how much make-up they need to hide themselves, and not be found out ... guess what ... it won't work. They are not good actors at all, to fool anyone out there, and admins are not that stupid. I would "report" that post to the admins. While not saying it directly, it says it indirectly and you have a right to feel touched by it, as it is indeed shameful and ridiculous ... but it tells you how much admins ignore in these forums ... but then ... Cakewalk, is not exactly helping ... how many women are shown in their list of this and that, and how much credit and thank you are they giving women around here? NONE! I imagine that the Coffee House, is probably the one place where you can, at least, enjoy yourself and appreciate comments.

Terrible things people say in these forums... "Please also note there is no talent button, perception button, or endless wealth features included with Sonar* *Not included with Hover car.". This terrible attack I wrote was in direct response to a criticism directly thrown at Cakewalk (uncalled for in my view). I got sworn at publicly and was called a stalker/troller. A host ignored it and publicly wrote nothing but apologies to that person. I got a PM from another host telling me they had received a complaint and what I presume (although it was unclear) not to write stuff like this. Really sends the right message!!! In advance I apologise to everybody for the terrible things I write (Inc this post!). Names have been withheld to protect the innocent.

I, personally, do not find this funny at all. Or even cute. Considering how many art shows my own sister has done all over Europe, she still gets grossly discriminated against in America, because she is a woman, and has all these awards and shows to show for it, but no "degree" to show her capability or ability. Like 40 years worth of works is not good enough of a story and view, and in the case of one situation here in America, they did not select her, and went for a "local" that was a 2nd rate talent, and whose work was ... poor, at best ... and while I would stand up for my sister, I do think that a little respect for the "art" itself, would be more important ... it wasn't. In many ways, what Susan is saying is very tough, and scary ... and it won't matter how good many of the ladies become ... we're still going to make fun of them and not appreciate them for what they do and work on. I simply found Craig's comment in very poor taste, though, I can see his point, and his desire to get a smile out of Susan, though it will probably come off backwards ... another tear, because a guy has to get the upper hand with a comment! That's really sad! I may have mis-understood this whole thing, but I can relate to it ... very hard! My sister is one example. I am another ... the famous dad (the man!), and the siblings that can not possibly have any artistic value/merit at all ... they were "accidents" by the parents, I guess, and are still not appreciated by their work ... and on top of it, there is not even any inclination into appreciating any of it! Sounds familiar? As opposed to making "funny" comments in lieu of real appreciation ... show your love and care, not your fake-ness!

Sorry ... the wording suggests something else altogether. No disrespect intended, and I can see that, but in light of Susan's post, I think that it was insensitive. I am not saying Craig is wrong ... I'm just saying that for me it felt incorrect and poor in judgment.

Hi Pedro- I didn't report that post (and again, that wasn't in a Cakewalk forum, just to be clear,) but I did reply to it. I can't remember ever seeing a female promoting any feature of any DAW except as a singer. Cakewalk follows in that tradition (happy to hear if I'm wrong.) See: http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Features#start Years and years (and years!) ago, Turtle Beach used one of those busty cartoon images of a scantily-cald female you typically see on a truck's tire mud flaps to promote their soundcards. I never saw the connection and told them they might be alienating potential customers. They cared deeply ;)! I think *SOME* guys still consider DAWs to be their domain--a boys' club--for whatever reason and won't even accept advice or suggestions from a female until a guy chimes in with exactly the same advice. It's weird, but I've seen it happen for years. Thanks- -Susan

Hi Susan, This isn't for a DAW but this video just happened to be released today/yesterday and I posted it earlier in another thread and your post made me think of it. It's for Moog's brand new semi-modular synth - definitely not a "simplistic" product - and 2 of the 3 artists in it are women and, well, nothing at all seems to be made of that fact. So perhaps there is some hope: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCJacEzcU7A
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Hi Drew- Oh, wow, thank you so much for that--really, truly! As you said, the fact that "nothing at all seems to be made" of the fact that two of the three artists are women is huge, IMO! I remember the first time I saw a feminine pronoun used (just dropped in, casually) in a User Manual (it was Geoffrey Francis' REAPER Guide, IIRC) and I was like "Thank you! Maybe it won't always be 'he, him,' forever more!" I also appreciate the fact that those women look like real, regular women, and not like "Oh, these babes are gonna appeal to our male audience." Bravo! -Susan

I don't think people's morality has changed over the years. I don't think bigotry, rudeness or hatred are more prevelent today than the past.
The birth of the internet has given us the opportunity to communicate with the world and now we can be honest with our opinions or even insulting without facing people face-to-face.
If I'm on line at the store and two people are talking about a politician they love I'm not going to risk an argument or worse and say that candidate is a crook. Even if I believe that is the case. On the internet, I'm much more likely to give my opinion.
If we had to actually meet the people we correspond with, I think our posts would be much less controversial and that wouldn't change no matter the decade.
