GigaStudio 3 and Sonar X2a

Hello friends. A few years back when I was selling musical gear retail, a smooth-talking software rep sold me (at a good discount) Tascam's GigaStudio 3 Orchestra, and threw in Larry Seyer's Acoustic Drums and Scarbee R.S.P. Fender Rhodes 73 piano. After being MIA due to medical problems, I was cleaning out some old things and found the disks. After some research, I am interested in seeing if these things can be incorporated into Sonar X2a. So, I have a few questions. First, is there a current VST sample player that can make good use of .gig files? Several old posts about GigaStudio referred to them working at a kernel level deeper than VST that caused system instability. Secondly, has anyone encountered problems using GigaStudio 3 with Sonar? Since all posts I found are way old and with mixed results, I fear crashing a good thing just to be greedy. I don't know much about samplers and Rewire, but I think the Orchestral sounds and the Kawai 7'4” GigaPiano II alone would be worth considering, and I hate to just throw them away. So lastly, since Tascam no longer offers support for this product, any advise from those of you far more advanced than me about all this would be greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance.

I don't think you want to mess with Gigastudio on a fairly current system. However Kontakt can import GigaStudio files and use them well.

Oh, SuperG, I have heard of this "Google" thing.  Heard you were the man too, but I didn't believe.  But, I have seen the light!  I'm a believer in both of you now! Thanks for the "this thing" link.  G-Player looks like what I need.  Gonna check it out thoroughly.  Thanks and Laudanum Dios back at ya!

OK John. My current setup is Win 7 Pro 64 bit, Intel Core Quad 2.4 Gig, 4 gig RAM, Nvidea GeForce GT 610, M-Audio Delta 1010.  I'll check out Kontakt too.  Thanks much.

Been down this road (though it's been a while).  For converting/playing back giga format, here are my recommendations:

1) Kontakt.  Ain't cheap, but if you already have it, then it's a no-brainer.  Does a decent job importing and playing back giga files.

2) G-player.  A one-trick pony... Probably not worth its price if you don't have a substantial giga library, but if you do, this is the king.  Probably the most accurate because it plays giga natively -- there's no converting.  Another advantage is that it's still being developed and updated.

3) Samplelord.  An older, multiformat player, and stopped development at 32 bit.  Still, I used this for years before getting Kontakt.  In terms of accurate playing, IMO it's second only to G-player.  Sad it's not being developed anymore, because the dev really knew his stuff.  (This player is also excellent at playing soundfonts).

4) Linuxsampler.  Free, but rather complicated to figure out.  I never tried this one, but other users have sworn by it.  It's free, so if you have a small Giga library, and are tech-oriented, this one's definitely worth a try.

These all have demos, so you can try them out.

Though it is only 32 bit VSampler imports and works well...

Other than being 32 bit is I find the songs I create with it frequently crash Sonar during changling songs (i.e A song is loaded and I go to load a different song)...

Never hurts anything but I must close/re-open Sonar... and it's not consistent...

[<font]Sure do appreciate all this good advice. It makes me feel like I'm not up against such a high technical hurdle. Thanks for taking the time to help a technically-challenged fellow Sonar user. Maybe I'll be able to pay it forward to someone else in some way someday (If I live long enough to learn it). Thanks fellas.
