[SOLVED] Can't run Sonar Platinum after update - "mfc120.dll is missing" message
I updated Sonar Platinum to Ipswich last night. After updating, everything was fine and I was able to run Sonar and open projects. I put my computer to sleep for the night. Just now I tried running Sonar again and it says that it can't open it and I'm getting an error message that says "mfc120u.dll is missing". I don't know what to do. Please help! Edit: the file missing is actually "mfc120u.dll" - I forgot the "u".

slartabartfast If you literally put your computer to sleep, try rebooting it.
I tried restarting, but I'm getting the same error. :(

skitch_84 Edit: the file missing is actually "mfc120u.dll" - I forgot the "u".
This file looks like it's part of the Visual Studio 2013 runtime files. Maybe try reinstalling this package I would try downloading the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2013 from here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977003

Under System Requirements, it doesn't list Windows 10 as compatible with that package. https://www.microsoft.com.../details.aspx?id=40784

I just found this thread posted by someone with the exact issue I'm having: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Windows-10-update-unable-to-start-Sonar-Plat-m3268614.aspx
Reinstalling Sonar fixed the issue for them. I posted the following on that thread as well, but I want to ask here: I've never reinstalled Sonar before, so I want to make sure that I won't lose any data in the process. Will all of my track and project templates remain untouched? Is there anything I have to do to ensure that Sonar Platinum is exactly as it was before I reinstalled? Also, do I reinstall from the Command Center? I don't see an reinstall option there, only 'uninstall' and 'rollback" when I right-click on Sonar Platinum.

Have you searched for the file with "system" and "hidden" turned on ? I run Windows 7 64 bit and I've gotten that error after a Sonar version upgrade, and that file does appear to be part of the 2013 VIsual C++ Redistributable. I actually had the file, but there are 32 and 64 bit versions of that package, with separate, identically named files of different sizes in two places. Way to go Microsoft ! I "think" I reinstalled the 64 bit version and currently have two such files, the 32 bit version in c:\windows\system32 at 5.35 mb and another in c:\windows\wowsys64 at 4.24 mb. I see in my search history that I've searched for that file so I know I had the problem. I've also heard people on this forum say to remove and reinstall all of the redistributable packages to solve other nagging problems. I also try to do installs as administrator, and turn UAC off. Then I turn it back on if things will run with it on. Yes, my studio rig is connected to the internet and Im waiting till the last minute on Windows 10. Your mileage may vary :)

I found the file in the SysWOW64 folder, but I don't have one in the system32 folder. I only run the 64bit version of Sonar, so shouldn't having the first one be enough?

Other way round; syswow is for 32 bit system files; system32 for 64 (there is logic behind this to be fair!).

Can you (or anyone) confirm that the "Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013" (link below) is indeed compatible with Windows 10? I have a feeling that my missing .dll file will be found in this package, but if you click on System Requirements in the link below, it doesn't list Windows 10. Yet, this is the most recent package, so I'm guessing it was just an oversight on Microsoft's part not updating the page with Windows 10. http://www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx?id=40784

Okay guys. I went ahead and reinstalled the 64bit Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013. Sonar Platinum is opening up fine now. Thanks for the tips!

I just came across this problem tonight, I think after an automatic Windows 10 update. (An Nvideo video driver update earlier this evening also complained about some issue in this area.) I can also confirm that installing the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2013 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784 resolved the issue for SONAR. I hope this isn't going to become a recurring thing after Windows 10 automatic updates (it is the first time I've seen it, but the dates on the posts above suggest it isn't the first time it's happened).

Re-install went perfect. Downloaded in a few minutes.. Install was in seconds. I wouldn't even attempt a different fix. This was way too easy.
