Could the difference be anything to do with how the DAW creates MIDI clips (ie. there's a good reason for SONAR behaving this way)?  For example, and it's a very long time since I used Cubase, in Cubase, you needed to create a "container" before you could add MIDI notes to it (this seemed silly to me, which is one of the reasons I went with Cakewalk, as I didn't need to do that work up-front).

Here are my thoughts about this problem (feature request):
http://forum.cakewalk.com...dub-mode-m3276115.aspx

The request to record a looping step sequencer is very similar. Basically a new hit firing in an existing SS slot would get overwritten.

From a PRV aspect, not sure what criteria would trigger an overwrite... Snap settings?

Yeah, maybe. Everything is possible if there is idea what to do.
And I don't like step sequencers so much as earlier, I think with right options and features everything could be done in PRV easier. There is just lack of this features at this time. In fact step sequencer could be embedded in PRV.

I definitely like the "integrated" idea. If the SS also captured swing, a note can land +/-50% and still fall into that "step." In PRV, I have rarely attempted these things, but looping will either double down or replace everything (and neither of these are often the desired result). The SS can selectively replace hits (with swing) if data is already in those steps, with flams having to be edited manually (or not if they hit on the same recording pass?)
