Sorry to disagree, but In the Air is one of the most horrible vocal styles i've ever heard. His voice just grates. And he keeps bringing it out.

No Son of Mine and some of its predessessors is molto better, but there's always that vocal style you either like or don't ! I don't.
....

I know, but goodness ... that would make Joe Cocker, Roger Chapman, Rod Stewart, the guy from Acqua Fragile/PFM and so many others not good singers and that is not the case. I don't think of this as a "vocal style" as much as I do, that the person is able to adjust his words to sing with it, and it's hard to say that Chappo is a bad singer when you hear "Gypsy Moon" and so other things. I am not sure it is a style ... I think it's more like ... that's the way it is pal ... this is the voice I got ...

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Personally, I like his voice - oh well.  Then again, I also like Richard Butler from the Psychedelic Furs too.

Personally I like his voice. It's distinctive. There are so many popular artists around these days with almost exactly the same voice, what I would call the "American Idol" sound. I hear so many young vocalists who sound identical right now, it's spooky. They all adopt the exact same vocal inflections and timbre, even a lot of the so-called "serious" artists who write and play their own music. I rarely hear anyone whose voice stands out as different. You hear people say things like "what a set of lungs on that girl," "he can really hold a note" or "what soul!" (which is just another way of saying they close their eyes when they sing and warble a scale run around every note) but never "he sounds like nobody else."

Weird or distinctive voices grow on you as an acquired taste. So much of today's music is sugary sweet and designed to have instant appeal but it's ultimately disposable.

I've always thought that three folks that should spend time coaching kids at American Idol ... should be Bob Dylan (would teach them to use swear words!), Peter Hammill (would teach them to sing until there is no breath or song left!) and Roy Harper (keep on word'ing until the song is over, but the words aren't!) ... then we might have a nice competition!

I think Phil's had enough bashing for now. Saw a very candid interview with him recently where he admitted that he'd overdone things and had way too much exposure in the '80's, especially the 'cheeky chappie' routine on stage. He said he could understand now why he would get on some people's nerves.

Sad about his health problems too, he looks a shadow of his former self these days.

Anyone heard his son Simon's stuff? Spooky...

I had not heard his stuff before, thanks for sharing!  he is definitely Phil's son...voice, looks even his hand motions and body language are distinctly "Phil-ish"

Even in this video and song Phil shows an engaging self deprecation. Perhaps nothing more than smart marketing...but still nothing that begs for the kind of derision he seems to attract.

Plus...you, your ownself, butchered the spelling and usage of nonsensical...which makes you sort of nonsensical yourself;-)

I liked it. Good vocal on that song. The rhythm is a bit lumpen but it still holds up. That was a pretty good album by and large, even had a couple of those 'longer cuts' that Mosh likes. 'No Son of Mine' is a great song too.

As a kid I quite liked his version of "Can't Hurry Love" - I think I was amused at there being multiple Phil's singing in the video, but also very much liked the melody. To this day I think it's better than the original.

Mama is just a great track though, even with Collins' stupid cackling bits. There's a mid section in the song (starting "Can't you seeeee.....") which is a fantastic example of how much drama you can wring out of a minor chord progression. I love it, stunning piece of songwriting and Phil really belts it out over those chords.

Its all subjective, but the guys you mention have their own distinctive styles, as does Uncle Phil. Totally agree about Mr Chapman. But totally different style to Mr Collins.

FWIW i've had the vinyl version of Cook since it came out, just bought the extended CD version - brilliant !

I have never personally met Phil Collins, so I can't honestly say what kind of a person he is. Nor do I personally know any of these forum members, but as a human I do form an impression of what you are about by what you write.  With experience I know that my impressions may only be partially right.

In honesty, I can regrettably remember more than one time that I came across as being insincere and even pompous.

I have to admit that Phil Collins has accomplished a lot in his career.  I do enjoy some of his older tracks now and again.

Life is a journey, hopefully we all learn to get along.

I wish all of you the best

I don't dislike those albums ... just not on my favorite list, and by that time, there was far better stuff released all over Europe and America that deserved more attention, in my book. I would never say that Genesis or Phil Collins are not very good artists.

I dont understand the hating on Phil Collins either. I think its a shame that so many people take a few aspects of his private life and then become judgemental on his entire existence. I mean, a lot of so called 'whiter than white' entertainers and actors are only deemed to be so because they may have managed to keep many unsavioury aspects of their life successfully under wraps.

To me PC seems OK, even a little lonely these days. He may have made mistakes, but if he is paying the price and regrets some of his past, then shouldn't we be as generous to him as we would wish folk to be to us in similar circumstances. Back to the music, I loved the entire Genesis output, still do, and his solo work has some great stuff in there too. In the solo years when he toured, he really knew how to put a great band together, and I for one, hope he can pull it out of the bag at least one last time.

Re: Phil Collins is back at it again 2015/11/02 12:21:17 (permalink)
I actually posted the thread with just poking fun in mind.

I am proud to say that I actually REALLY like his vocals on the mid-70's Genesis stuff, even his Seconds Out covers of older material that Peter Gabriel had  sung.  He also made some great songs on the first few albums that came out after The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

Wind and Wuthering is one of my all-time favorite Genesis albums, and Tony Banks also considers it some of their finest work.

Lastly, what were they supposed to do?  They had all the elements of an iconic legendary band, that lost their lead singer, who wanted to explore a much different approach to songs then what would have happened if he stayed with Genesis?  The remaining folks chose Phil, who was already there, and already singing, and then they proceeded to kick butt with that new line up, though once they veered sharply into oncoming traffic later on, I was no longer liking a lot of the newer material.  (I Can't Dance makes me break out in a rash - hee hee)

There was a complete saturation of PC in the 80's - he WAS one of the best pop drummers ever, and he pretty much defined a style of drum processing that put a stamp on countless other recordings.

So - like him or not for any portion of his history, cool - I quite fondly still play Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Seconds Out, and a few cuts from And Then There Were Three.

If I had to choose just 2 Genesis albums, I'd have Selling England by The Pound and Trick of The Tail. They cover everything that's good about the band for me.

If I had to choose a vocalist for my band, and I had any choice I wanted, I would take Jim Morrison first. Why? ... he's excellent at "living" with a "poem", and that is something that most "singers" can not do ... you can get shivers just hearing him say when the music is over ... turn out the lights ... or so many other things he did. It's hard not to feel it, as it cuts right though you, and is not fake, or just a show.

Big difference. Huge difference.
