I agree. This is outstanding stuff!

I do have to say the opening rhythm sounds like something I've heard before. Not that means anything but there it is. Maybe it's just a feeling invoked by the nostalgic sound you've created.

Well done!!!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

Thanks Robert! Yeah, I had that feeling as well, but I couldn't locate anything. I decided "to heck with it" and just continued. By the time I was done, I'm pretty sure it isn't anything that already exists, though the opening still reminds me of something.

Dan,
As I commented on Soundcloud....sheer brilliance! Everything is as good as it gets.....mix, instrumentation, vibe, performance. Above all, the song simply great! No movie could do it justice.
I haven't been this blown away by a song in a very long time!
Congratulations on an amazing job!

Hey Dan - an interesting story. A musician friend of mine not related to this forum reposted this on Facebook because he was so impressed with it.
This song came on after he had been listening to the Fizzy Pickle song.
I couldn't believe it when I saw your song pop up in my Facebook feed.

Wonderful. Right down the line this is a solid composition - the sparse (to my ears) instrumentation, the strong arrangement (it never gets dull) and the playing (subtle and very effective). I haven't been on the forum in a while - I'd forgotten how good some of this music is.

And yes, there is a genuine cinematic feel to this. I thought, girl and a gun - Sharon Stone in the Quick and the Dead. However, this didn't evoke that when I listened - what it did bring to mind are the books by Carlos Castaneda that I had read  - much takes place in the desert - traveling over vast expanses of western desert.

I'd love to see this with some accompanying film track. Great job.

Thank you!

My feeling is, if I'm going to use them, they better a) sound great (the samples that is), and b) I better program the crap out of them to make them sound like they should. I've played guitar since I was 8, then drums and bass in high school, so I do know what those instruments should be doing, lol. I still struggle with orchestration because I'm never sure what instruments (voilins, violas, cellos, trombone, trumpet, etc...) should play which parts. I just mix them up until I like what I hear.

Dan

I'll chime in with the others saying great work! The only thing I have to complain is that ending seems a little lazy as a fade out... Feels like you could do so much better with it. But it's a minor gripe and doesn't really affect the piece so much. :)

I would pitch this tune to Rock Star software....it would be a perfect soundtrack to the video game, Red Dead Redemption 2 if they ever get around to releasing it.

Just an excellent piece all around Dan. How much of the guitar stuff did you actually play? I thought they sounded very convincing... It's a nice sample library for sure, if that's what they were.                                              Great production and mix!

Great composition! It is a western with a modern twist.
Like it and I agree that the right gtr in some parts should be back in order that you give room to the air instrument that also sound western.

But again if it sounds good to you its good. The gtr brings the western.

Like it!

Technically, I played it all...on a keyboard, lol. All the acoustic parts are Evolution Acoustic from OrangeTree. Other guitars are my strat. I have a really nice Martin that I used to come up with the parts, but I do not have a really good mic to record it.

Just got an idea in my head about the fading ending... Would fit this track so nicely to have the sounds of the prairie rise up when the music fades out. A desolate wind, some tumbleweeds, you know all the clichés. :)
