Aye, that's a sad bit of news but I completely understand where he's coming from. Go out on a high note before you become a parody of yourself. Good on you Neil.

I wonder if this is a "real" retirement ala Bill Bruford, or, well let's just say I saw the supposed "Who's Last" tour thirty-some years ago.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

A sad day for Rush fans, but like ampfixer said, at least he's going out on a good note. Look at Ozzy. He had the No More Tours tour in the early 90's, and then just kept going and going, until he finally became a joke. Congratulations to Neil on a stellar career.

Rush has pretty much said that they were not going to tour anymore after R40. They never ruled out new recordings or maybe a show here and there.
I didn't read this and think it was meant as an official announcement.
Hopefully they'll retire into their studios and crank out a few albums.

Seems like no more touring rather than a full retirement.  Time will tell!  Listening to some Rush @ work right now as it happens :-)

I think it said on a major scale ... but that leaves open the chance of doing small shows that do not require such a magnitude of work, and just simplify every thing to straight playing.

But hearing him saying that after 50 years ... is kinda sad, but I can see where the routine and repetition, can get tiring and after a while not as much fun.

Not one of my favorite bands, but like the Grateful Dead, their volume of work is impressive and they deserve some credit for having done it.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Over 40 million albums sold worldwide..I think they get credit where it's due.

I hate to be cynical, but reality is that the permanence of any musician's retirement often depends on how good they are at managing their lifestyle vs. their available retirement funds.

Which can be difficult if they have never really had to learn how to live on a budget.

I remember an interview with Pete Townshend from (I think) the 1980's where he talked about one day being dead broke and then the next day a royalty check would arrive...

Wow, I'm in that exact same position! Just without the royalty check...

All I can say, is when your tour promoters are Depends and Ensure, it's probably time to stop touring.

I saw the Who on their first, last tour, and it was around '85. I never thought farewell tours could become an entire career path until those guys started it.

As I've told before...  I had tickets to see the Who, but Entwhistle passed the night before the concert so I never got to see them...
