My audio engine is "inactive".

I've tried several projects. I've tried X3. I just updated with CCC to the newest Platinum. I cannot get a sound from anything. It doesn't seem to just be Sonar. I tried the standalone of BFD ECO and got no sound. If I turn up the gain on my Octa-Capture I hear a slight hiss through the monitors.
I tried clicking the Audio Engine on/off button but it does nothing. Does not change color or anything. So no sound through Sonar. Platinum or X3. No sound from BFD ECO standalone.
I went to the songs forum and tried a Soundcloud link... it scared me, I didn't realize how loud I had it. So, sound is coming through the OC and monitors, just not from Sonar or from at least one standalone.
Any ideas what I can do?
Earlier I deleted some projects. Do you suppose I deleted something else important? Still, why would it affect SPLAT, X3, and BFD?
Baffled. I only know the audio engine is not running because EZD2 notified me. I have restarted. I've turned the OC off and back on.
Help...

I've tried switching to WDM. I've tried two different USB ports but since Soundcloud plays fine.. I just don't get it. The audio engine button is greyed out in both SPLAT and X3. I tried enabling the metronome, I imported an audio WAV into a track, I turned echo on... nothing. I wonder if I should try reinstalling the new update. I'll be busy most of tomorrow so I may not get back to this until tomorrow afternoon but I WILL be back. This has never happened to me before. Until I know better I'm blaming W-10, lol. I'm sure it is user error though, it usually is. I just cannot imagine what I've done. It makes no sense to me.

What OS are you using?

When I had Win 7 a couple of times I had to either delete my Octa-Capture drivers and reinstall everything or unplug the Octa-Capture, turn on the computer, plug in the unit and had Win 7 find new hardware.  I have had no problems what so ever with Win 10 except that on an update it turned on my mother board Realtek sound card. I had to turn that off.

Roland made the Captures plug and play for Win 10 and they are a lot more stable, at least here they are a lot more stable.

YMMV

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

Try this.

As you are sitting there staring at a gray audio engine, Open Preferences and look at the audio settings. Don't do anything but apply to close the preferences dialog. - did that get the audio engine going? After reading this last night and forgetting about it, I went to mix and after first start, my engine would not engage, So on a whim, I did what I described and voila! - if this fixes it for you there maybe a thing w/ the Aug update.

Windows 10 - 32bit.

I'm using W-10 anniversary update. I'm on my phone, this is all I've read. I'll read the rest. Back home mid afternoon, I'll follow up then.... and thanks! Ok, read the rest, I'll try that when I get home. I hope I haven't changed too much other stuff, I changed the sample rate and from ASIO to WDM, I'll change those back and try what you said.

You know, I was wrong. I have W-10 on my DAW but I'll have to check the version. I put the August update on my laptop but not yet on my DAW, perhaps I should. I had to redo some of my security settings. It changed them with the update. I know it will want to install and run Windows Defender but I suppose I can uninstall it. I don't surf or use email on the DAW so I see no need for an AV program. Famous last words???
Later and thanks again!

As its affecting things other than Sonar, you might want to open the sound settings for Windows and re-confirm the settings. Maybe they got changed during the update?

Check Windows sound card settings first. It must be visible there (and often not used by another source, depending) for SONAR to see it.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

Crap... just wrote a long post and had to recover the page...
Only thing important is that the only thing I have knowingly changed is that I updated Sonar to the latest version, and installed the color scheme thingy.
I was able to drag/drop a short clip from the browser to a MIDI track and output it through general midi, MS wavetable or something... and it plays. I've never had trouble playing EZDrumer though. When I click the speaker icon on the tray OC comes up as handling recording/playback and sounds (sounds are all off in setings though).
I haven't had time today and wont most of tomorrow but in the PM or Saturday I'll get back on it and follow up here.
Thanks for the ideas. I will probably update that computer to the anniversary version on W-10 and see if there are any new updates from TT or anything else. I'm sure it is something that has been changed somewhere but I don't know what.
I'm pretty sure the anniversary update is like a re-install. It seemed that way on my laptop. I had to go through settings for security etc again.
Anyway, thanks and I'll be back tomorrow PM or Saturday.
Keni, I'll have good news on another front by Saturday.

Thanks Julien... Always happy to get good news! ;-)

DAW: if you load a new project with an audio clip... No plugins and clean routing...

Are you hearing the audio? I'm looking to understand if it's actually the audio or something related to plugins (for example)...

I know your busy, so just some thoughts... You can always call me and we can walk through some things... Maybe I can even get teamview running so I can see your machine?
