For me if it was anywhere it would be Ireland. I was told as a kid growing up my great grandparents (mother's side) came over during the potato famine. I really do like traditional Irish music (and trying to learn some of it - got a tin whistle and bodhran for Christmas). I think some of this also comes from my love of bluegrass music. Celtic and bluegrass share a lot, with Bill Monroe including many characteristics into bluegrass. Right now I live about 25 miles south of DC (we have also been snowed in. After a bunch of 12/14-hour shifts in our command center I am about through!). I love going up into the Lancaster (Amish) Pennsylvania where Starise is located (we stay at the Mill Bridge campground by the old covered bridge). In a few years when I retire though, I want to move south to the Maggie Valley/Asheville NC area. Love that area with the mountains. A nice place to live out the rest of my life - playing music and watching the sun come up over the mountains.

It might be nice to retire in Sweden. Take a walk, sit around and watch the ladies walk by... IDK. Portugal? If it were safer I'd love to spend some time in Istanbul and in Afghanistan but that seems out of the question these days. Where ever the cost of living is low, the government and police leave you alone, there is a lot of freedom, and a decent climate... a place where live and let live is the way of life. No theocracy, no oppression, personal responsibility. Nah.. I guess I'll stay right here. I like where I live. A few laws need to evolve but over all, it is pretty good. J

Is there any other sort of government action? It seems all they do is foul up. Land on your feet. I hope things settle down for you, like now. J

For some reason it doesn't matter anymore that my X wife gets half my retirement. The reason I qualify for where I live is because my income is less than $12,000 a year. I talked the best I could to management but their response was "our hands are tied, oh yeah, you also owe for the past 5 years that you didn't pay on your full retirement".

Since moving to Australia from England, I miss the following 3 things: - Double-glazed windows (too much noise coming in from outside while I'm trying to do music stuff).
- Shreddies (my favourite breakfast cereal which the Aus govt apparently believes contains too much vitamin B12 so it's not available here).
- Real ales (surely I don't need to explain this one).

Found a shop here in central Vietnam selling Fuller's London Pride, IPA and Honey Dew. First time in 3 years of living here (including Ho Chi Minh City) I've seen them. UK prices, which stings on my wages, but that's fair enough. My birthday this week, so I brought the remainder. I accidentally picked up and Aussie Ale (Coopers), which was ok. I'm hoping that UK ales here is a sign of things to come, as the number of UK and USA immigrant workers increase in the area.

kakku Thank you for comments guys!
Just to resurrect the thread a bit :) My first night in Ireland - About 2:00 am on a drizzly morning near Shannon. As I was lying awake in my ground-level hotel room in the city, beginning softly in the distance but then becoming louder what could only be two Irish lads making their way home from a pub, singing a largely unintelligible and questionably harmonized drinking song that filtered into the room through a high window that did not allow me to actually see the singers. Doppler-like, the voices came and then passed into the dark morning and vanished in the distance. I've forgotten a lot in my life, but for some reason I remember this little event. I remember thinking at the time that "...They must be a singing people".
