icontakt Yes, I know. But I believe users perceive Craig as being on the CW side. At least I do. So, although what he said was absolutely correct, it gave me the impression that CW was saying, "What do you guys think? But please don't say anything negative." As Andrew pointed out, previews are not intended to ask people what they think but to accommodate those who want more advance notice of what's coming. In that context neither positive nor negative comments make much sense, because I tend to think opinions should be based on experience, not conjecture. As to whose side I'm on, I've said before, I advocate on behalf of users to Cakewalk, and on behalf of Cakewalk to users. That's how I'm wired. Of course I think SONAR is great, I've used the software for 16 years and accomplished a lot with it. But the folks at Cakewalk will confirm that I can be very critical. Just ask them about my opinions, expressed both publicly and privately, about the Start Screen when it was first introduced, or the de-normalization problems with some of the PC plug-ins. As to negativity, I have a problem with a lot of what f I read online, by no means only about Cakewalk, where people spout opinions about matters where they have zero experience. I've seen "reviews" on other sites where someone says something "sucks" based on reading a press release, for chrissakes. I'm sick of the general negativity of the internet. If I was an alien civilization and my only knowledge of earth was reading the Comments sections on YouTube, I'd decide the universe would lose nothing by just blasting the place into oblivion . Andrew Rossa [Cakewalk] I didn't think it was such a bad idea to give people a sneak preview of the features or the ezines ahead of time. I thought based on the past feedback it would be welcome. Either way people will complain. Those who want to know what's coming up will be upset if you stop doing previews. Speaking as a user, though, I would prefer having previews. Then again, I'm the kind of person who actually shows up at movies in time to catch all the previews.

You're right. The original post only says, "See for yourself." But I interpret it as "What do you think?" It would probably be best if we could hide threads we don't want/need to see/read. In fact, I want to hide as much as 8 of the threads pinned at the top section.

Totally agree and second the view point. I love previews. They help to provide a look ahead and to know what to expect (at least part of the whole monthly update package if not full). And I appreciate putting up a video for it which is a good idea in terms of giving users a direct view of how the feature works and how to use it. It sort of serves as a mini tutorial and helps being quickly prepared to be able to use it (if you need it, that is). One could of course choose not to use the new feature and keep doing things the old ways as convenient for the workflow. Its all a matter of having different options which is why I love Sonar for what it is and the way its developing. I do personally like this Add track option though its a simple update but provides greater focus on the initial track settings and routing. Possibly because I use more of direct new track additions on a blank slate compared to many others who may prefer project and track templates to initiate the workflow. Looking forward to more such preview feature videos for new stuff, especially the LP mastering updates, UI themes and Help module in the coming days / months... keep cooking bakers

It seems some here have short memories. It's not that long ago many of us were complaining that Cakewalk didn't keep us up to date with any new features/tweaks that were in development. In the grand scheme of things, and compared to how it once was, I think Cakewalk are correct to preview new features/tweaks to the user community, and I for one would like to thank them for this. As far as the Add Track fly-out is concerned, I believe it is partly an extension of the planned UI Theme update currently in development.. " /> ..which itself is a feature many of us been begging for since upgrading from 8.5 to X1. It's all about perspective, and I think Cakewalk have 20/20 vision at the moment.

I love the word "vintage", which often means 'old with a disproportionately high price tag'. "Emulation" is not far behind, meaning "here you go, sucker, give me your money and let's pretend you now own the real thing"...

If you are talking about the "2b or not 2b" period, I think I have better memory. People were complaining because CW didn't give any news for several months, not just one month. As I said, I appreciate the Future Updates section. I only questioned the need to release the preview video just a week or so before it is available to the users. But I've learned that all I need to do is not to click the preview thread or the link to the preview, no matter how tempting it is...

WOW !! What a screen....... NO one has told much about this? Well, I think if we have to use that pen with mouse then won't it be a little bigger as mouse pointer? Will the tip of that reach at the corners or edge of the screen otherwise we will lose so much of real estate of the screen. Well , can the inclination of the pen icon be rotated with any of the MIDI rotary knobs .. if not then its a bug. Can we choose the font? There will be Font Menu? How will we get those squares and those corner rounded ? Will there be Shapes Menu also? Great.. But can we change the radius of curvature for those corners? Will we have Circle and triangle as well? No? Ok I will put as FR. But Bakers should have taken that into account as well.. at least they could have introduced the feature of changing the radius of curvature and if we keep increasing the square will become a circle. They should have put enough resources. But instead of trying to develop this you should have put all your efforts for fixing bugs. and surely you can include a plugin as CorelDraw LE... Going to have a coffee... [I can make such suggestions and comments because : I don't know how software are developed..I don't know how much bakers struggle to make it up the deadline as they announce before hand...I don't know how many sleepless nights they spent with this developments..I don't know how much the bakers be careful to introduce new features keeping the existing one intact while not having all possible sort of hardware platform to test with..I don't know how much previously reported bugs are bothering them..I don't know how many of them are working for the development..I don't know how many times they have to tear themselves between the SONAR target date and family emergencies..I don't know how many of us would be capable of meeting the target if target was given that on a particular date only the coming update of SONAR can be downloaded..I ONLY KNOW I HAVE PAID $99 !! [in a year] which entitles me to COMMENT, CRITICIZE, COMPLAIN [CCC] the Company ,the Product, the DeveloperS and sometimes other forum members as well.. I am not the only one there are some in this room... Coffee is getting cold. :(

Andrew Rossa [Cakewalk] I actually don't think that I've objected to any of the feedback that has shown up on this thread except the user that said SONAR had been neglected, which I didn't think was true at all.
Yes, I know. But I believe users perceive Craig as being on the CW side. At least I do. So, although what he said was absolutely correct, it gave me the impression that CW was saying, "What do you guys think? But please don't say anything negative."

I think it depends on the feature and how helpful/completed it is. If you are very confident that the feature will be favored by the vast majority, then I guess it's worth creating and releasing the preview (although it will only excite viewers for a week or so). But if you think the feature is not fully implemented or missing something, you might want to reconsider it. As you can see, several posters in this thread are not happy with the feature, with a few questioning why it was prioritized and one posting a feature request in the F&I forum even before the feature is released(!). I actually wanted to post negative comments too, like "Why does the fly-out window has to be locked there?" "Why does it not allow us to create several MIDI tracks with different MIDI channels when we insert a multi-timbre synth like TTS-1 or Kontakt?" "Why can't we specifiy track colors?" etc. BUT, the opinions of these posters (including me) who are let down by the preview might actually change in the positive direction IF we try the feature ourselves. So, what does this one week mean for us? Updates come out on a monthly basis, which is good enough. I hope CW will let users concentrate on learning how to use the features and contents released in the previous month and making music without interrupting them with this preview thing and its associated thread.
Duly noted. Thanks for the feedback!

Anderton
jpetersen If you were on BBSes in 1978, you had a jump start on a certain Mr. Anderton who at that time was "still" disseminating information by the medium of bound paper.
MarioD was definitely an early adopter! Aside from Community Memory, the first "real" BBS was started in February 1978 by a couple guys in Chicago using an S-100 bus computer. At the time, I too was using S-100 bus computers because I did marketing/advertising for Godbout Electronics, which later became CompuPro. This was after the Altair came out in IIRC 1974. I still have some 8" floppy disks sitting around for nostalgia's sake... CompuPro is also how I came to know Roger Nichols...he used an S-100 computer for his Wendel drum machine. No one at CompuPro could figure out who this guy was who was buying all the 8K Static RAM boards :) CompuPro also had a machine with an opto-isolated serial interface, just like MIDI, but wasn't developed as a musical protocol. Good times...
For those for whom "S-100" is a "what?"... Geez, does this take me back. My first personal computer was a hand-built S-100 with a Z-80 CPU card, 2 8K RAM cards (which, if I remember correctly, had 3 5-volt regulators with heat sinks each, or they could have been on the CPU card; can't remember), and 2 8-inch single-sided 241KB floppies. And, of course, an ADM TTY terminal. I think the RAM cards were $600/each (1979-1980). It ran CPM. The first thing you had to do after getting everything assembled and fired up? That's right. Write your double sided/double density floppy driver in ASM and link it to CPM. Once all of that was working, it was time to hook up the 300 baud acoustic-coupled modem. When the 1200 baud modems came out, I thought I was flying. And then 9600! Well, some places. 19,200 baud modems proved that another connection technology was needed. I was working at the Fermilab National Accelerator at the time (asst. crew chief, Neutrino Beam Line; working the midnight shift provided an excellent opportunity to assemble S-100 cards!) and had a chance to use DARPAnet while there, having NO clue whatsoever that that would be the replacement connection technology (the Internet and World Wide Web). And peeps **** about Win10!?!? Not me!

I'm really impatient for the new SONAR features, so I really like these previews :-) This new Add track menu seems to be excellent. Great idea. I think that improving the workflow with shortcuts, quick menus, etc. is very important.

I also remember that in the upcoming features, there is a kind of real-time help that tells you what is the function you are using and how to do it. I really want this feature to be released. The SONAR user manual is really excellent but when you're working on a project, you sometimes want to keep focused on it and not to be obliged to search into this big pdf file or into the online help. I use a software called MAGIX Photo & Graphic Designer 10 and every time I do something or even every time my mouse cursor hesitates between several icons, there's a short bottom help that tells me what to do (press CTRL to do this or ALT to do that...). Pretty cool.

My first real computer was a CompuPro S-100 machine. It was huge. 64k static ram. 2-8" floppies in a separate case. Z80, CP/M, Scion graphics, 300 baud modem. 10,000 $ !! I had to build a ttl circuit to interpret the weird serial protocol of the ibm pc keyboard before being able to use it. Wrote my own bios for it. Memories of Byte magazine and Jerry Pournelle...
