If this nonsense continues, I may just go back to my home planet!

My home planet has been destroyed.  I'm never going home again.

Jesse , Oh man , I'm so sorry to hear about your interplanetary troubles ...
I know from my own personal experience that being a Citizen of The Universe can sure have it's ups and downs when the Interplanetary Powers That Be keep changing the Interplanetary Immigration Laws

Well OK , now that you are here , what do you want to hear first? ... the good news ? or the bad news?
The good news is , while you are here on Earth , "We the people of Earth " will tolerate the wreckage of your presence .
Oh BTW,  It may also interest you to know that your home planet hasn't been destroyed after all ...
They only told you that because once you left your home planet they decided to cloak the planet with an invisibility shield and move it to an undisclosed new location in a Far Distant Galaxy that has yet to be discovered....

hang in there kid we are all pulling for you  ,

Kenny

So... what I'm gathering from this enlightening conversation is this.

If you have an iPhone and go out one night and meet a girl....and save her phone number into the phone...and then proceed to get knee crawling drunk... then decide to call her up the next day, but you're still pretty schloshed from the night before.... and you try several times to unlock the phone to retrieve the number... but being inebriated, you blow the attempts... then lose count as one might do, and try again several times... at the magic 10th try... you will brick wall the phone and everything gets deleted and no one on the planet can help you?

Sounds like a diabolical plan to sell more iPhones.

All joking aside.... keep the govt out of our affairs as much as possible.... enforce some other laws that are currently on the books but being ignored and we would have less of this kind of chicanery (terror attacks and crime) in the first place.

Herb,

WOW ,I think that every ex girlfriend and ex wife in the world would be pushing for a phone app that could do that.
Once a guy goes from Hero to Zero with confirmed Ex status , he only get 10 calls before he gets locked out for good .
Who knows , who ever comes up with that phone app may Win The Nobel Peace Prize for affecting a positive Global Social Change in human relationships ...
I don't know how many times when I was drinking  I showed up home sloshed with a case of the spins after last call .
Then I would get on my land line and call the "ex's " (real and imagined )  at least ten times well after  4 O Clock in the morning  whilst I was in the middle of a crying Jag

One reason lots of governments, including the US, choose to go with Blackberrys rather than Apple phones is that iOS7 and earlier versions of iOS lacked the necessary data security if they were lost or stolen.

So Apple took the hint and introduced what governments insisted they needed...

UPDATE: We seem to be in the minority on this one. A newly-released poll (from the Pew Research Center) shows that a majority of Americans think Apple should cave to the FBI.

Included in that majority is our own hometown hero Bill Gates, as well as Level 12 nerd-hero The Woz and anti-government hero Edward Snowden. Three people whose opinions I respect, and they all disagree with me! Unsettling.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

This whole thing reminds me of another recent incident concerning Hillarys computer.

Cell phone carriers are tapped by the feds when necessary meaning that they could  look up the carrier info and track who what and where the calls came from and went to. They have that authority in the US. This could tell them a lot without ever cracking the phone. They already have their leads.

I have a really tough time believing that big brother can't crack an iphone permission or no permission. It would just be more difficult without the code. These things are made in China...no doubt they also have a great understanding of the OS as well.

I'm not sure what's happening but I don't think it's the same thing as what looks like is happening. On a scale of 1 to 10 on how much I trust our press to provide a truly accurate story I'm at a -5.

None of this makes any sense.... a password is the first line of defense and is only there to prevent the casual theft of the product or loss of a product. It is only there to stop the average person, not experts.
...

Actually the translation of this is not quite right ... people on the other side of the password, would not need it to get in ... they are already sysadmins that easily get in there to fix anything ... the whole thing is a lie by Apple, and also the Government, that is hiding several other agendas, so they can break into ISIS, Al Qaeda, China, Russia and many other places ... where the security and communications is very difficult ... not only due to the language differences, but also the different way of thinking.

Normally, this should never have been brought into the public forum ... and this is really bad PR for the government, but they are trying to clean their ugly/dirty face after having been found out by Snowden and to now folks finding out that the government is even further into this than we could possibly imagine.

The whole thing is stupid, and Apple has a right to defend their business and product ... and not lose some credibility. Apple, over the years, has been very good about the virus situations and many other OS hawking issues to which Microsoft has been completely vulnerable many times and places.

But for anyone to think that folks at Apple can not get inside their systems is bizarre, stupid and insane ... one mistake, and the OS is hosed, and no one can fix it, and you have to wipe the phone/computer ... you would have too many people complaining about a very poor OS ... like Windows! And this has not been the case with Apple.

This whole thing is such a crock of $hit ....
The Friends With Benefits Agency  and the media are trying to hold a public Kangaroo court of opinion where Apple's data privacy  and the "peoples " rights to personal privacy are gonna get taken away ...
When did the media become the voice of the people ? if any thing they are outright instigators that dance at the end of a puppet string ...
The only viable currency they have is to inflict a fear based bombardment of guilt trips and to incite mass panic and fear directed at the poor unsuspecting snooks of the world that live their life's thinking big brother is their friend .

Promoting Fear and Chaos as a manipulative ploy  favors  "the house rules "because in the end it always equals big money gets to push it's hidden agenda and the redistribution of Power gets to slip under the cloak of trying to solve a problem that people think needs to be solved ...
Most unsuspecting people don't realize that sometimes the solutions to some problems are far worse than the problems they are looking to solve .
IMHO, In this case lets just call a spade a spade ...
This dick head play is an Outright Power Grab  .....

UPDATE #2: Turns out Bill Gates' comments were taken out of context. After hearing the full quote, it was obvious that Bill was not siding with the FBI after all. He was trying - clumsily - to give a diplomatic reply that didn't say anything one way or the other. The press had selectively extracted those parts that made for a more dramatic story.

It seems most people in the tech world back Apple in this, but nobody wants to come off as unpatriotic. Apparently, if you're not willing to hand over any and all investigative powers you're a terrorist sympathizer. "You're either with us or against us", to quote one past president who shall remain un-named lest this thread be accused of political content.

Now it turns out that police departments routinely intercept cell phone calls. The city of Baltimore has been particularly fond of this tool. Baltimore, which produces more terrorists per capita than, um, Fargo, North Dakota?

You know when you buy anything on-line it uses, or certainly should be using, https, so no-one can sit between you and the website and grab your card/paypal details? That relies on secure encryption.

On-line banking relies on secure encryption. Not just the customer using the website, but for transactions between banks, handling payroll bulk processing, everything.

Businesses that need to communicate over the internet, maybe even across national boundaries, generally do so using secure VPNs (virtual private networks). They rely on secure encryption to prevent their data being read by anyone with access to any of the internet it passes through.

If you keep passwords, banking details, business acounts, client records, or anything else that needs to be confidential on a computer that might be stolen then you need to consider securely encrypting it. Windows or OS X file system encryption is built into the operating systems for precisely that reason.

Make secure encryption ineffective or illegal and we're back to the 1970s. Pay bills or buy things by putting a cheque in the post, and all sensitive documents printed out on paper and stored in lockable filing cabinets. In short, everything to do with business that the internet makes possible becomes insecure and not to be relied upon.

So yes, it does matter and you should be concerned.

Though if you're not concerned, please feel free to PM me your bank and credit card details including any user names or passwords required to get full access to your money. I promise nothing untoward will occur. :-)

In a letter addressed to a federal judge in New York, a lawyer for Apple said that federal law enforcement has recently requested that the company access information on 12 other iOS devices. The list is likely not a complete tally of the FBI’s requests, and does not include similar requests from state or local police.

This whole thing has caused me to move from a 4 number passcode to a 6 number and I may move to a custom alphanumeric with auto delete on after 10 failed attempts... and I don't even have anything to hide. It is just the principle of the thing. I have a fingerprint scanner and password protection on my laptop too.
I do not trust the government at ALL. IMO, they do nothing well. The military is capable but the administration holds them back.

I said it before, I'll say it again: anyone who trades freedom for security will have neither. Yes, the government will offer us a "Volkswagen" or a promise of "healthcare for all" or "free education" (don't get me started on "so called " education). ...but I digress, I do not trust the government. I do not trust Apple. I do not trust Google. I trust my wife.
We need to think this thing through in the light of history and remember how well the Great Father in Washington keeps his promises... yeah. If we sit back and allow the government to do wrong to others.. one day it may be YOU or me that is abused. The wheel is turning and it wont slow down.
Yeah, I don't trust Apple but I trust them a LOT more than I trust the government.

Unsettling.

Hopefully the constitution will continue to protect the minority from the will of the majority. We are NOT a democracy, never have been. In the 19th century democracy was considered a bad word. Democracy is mob rule, populism.. which seems to be very popular in politics right now but populism is very dangerous, especially when combined with nationalism and socialism... freedom is the loser when these things come to power.

It's all part of the conditioning before the New World Order.  Be good little sheep.

Heck, even a Supreme Court judge wrote "A Nation of Sheep", no?

I think that most folks tend to distrust big business, and Apple is one of those ... and eventually, they should win, but they have to do better to help the government. I think, if they had not said anything, and the government had kept their mouth shut, no one would know anything, and be the better or worse for it.

But, I'm not sure I like the government doing what they did, but what do you think the government does in other countries? The owners of such a company would never make Lords and get to the big banana, and in many other places in the world the company would be burned down by the guns and what not.

Can you imagine that in Russia? Or Japan?

Yeah ... right!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!
