(Resolved) Sonar Platinum switches to Demo mode while working
Last night I was messing around with Platinum and it suddenly switched to demo mode. I checked Command Center and I was still logged in. What I had been doing was lost because since it was in demo mode it wouldn't save. I am very glad that what I was working on wasn't all that important or for a client. I paid up front because this is the last thing I wanted to deal with and here it is anyway. Once I closed Sonar and reopened it was fine again. Not good I'll be contacting Cakewalk Monday. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes this happened to me, I was unable to identify the problem, my suspicion is that windows began downloading an update, but it is only a suspicion. I did email tech support, however it was just as the snowstorm was happening in Boston so i haven't heard back. It has not happened again since. I am concerned now I hear it happened to someone else. I am hoping it never happens to me again very frustrating. when you contact Cake you may refer to My case number as it appears to be the same problem. Case# 155732 Tom

Hi folks, I believe this to be a spurious message. If this happens again please open the about box and list the numbers you see next to the serial number in parenthesis. I assume that it is now ok after you closed and restarted SONAR? BTW to clarify its not necessary to have command center running or to be connected to the internet if you have already paid for a full year. Anyway sorry for the inconvenience - we'll find out why it happens.

*Edited for clarity Yes it was ok after I closed and reopened and lost the work I was doing. I don't launch anything with Command Center, I opened it to see if I was still logged in and I was. I wasn't looking for the serial to be displayed I was just seeing if I was still connected according to CC. "BTW to clarify its not necessary to have command center running or to be connected to the internet if you have already paid for a full year." What was it looking for that it couldn't find? I would appreciate any help and I will contact support Monday.

All I meant that the demo mode message is possibly an error on our side since it shouldnt happen if you are an annual membership customer. We need to work with you to see what is triggering it. The reason were asking for the codes is it allows us to diagnose the cause thats all. Please work with whoever contacts you to provide the necessary info and I'm sure that the issue will be resolved quickly.

Maybe when it checks for expired membership it could ask the user to save any unsaved work before switching to demo mode? Regards, Dan

Or at least put up an non-cancelable modal dialog which asks the user to save and exit or retry the renewal check.

This has happened to me every single day since I installed. When I turn on the DAW and run sonar for the first time, I load a song and immediately check by doing a save as, and demo mode pops up. The only way to get it to run properly is to exit, and run CCC and hit launch first.

That's a good suggestion. Although in this case, the demo mode may be a glitch, what if someone paying monthly starts a project and after several hours of recording, the monthly anniversary rolls over, Sonar goes to Demo mode and locks them out of the ability to save? I paid up-front, so barring a bug, this shouldn't happen to me, but with those who pay monthly, they NEED to be able to save the first time Sonar reverts to Demo mode. Sure, lock them out after that, but I can imagine how devastated I would feel if I lost hours of work because my membership timed out in the middle of a large project. If this feature is already baked in, please forgive my ignorance.

Under normal circumstances its designed to warn you that it will turn into demo mode. There is a grace period and a notification like this will pop up "SONAR will switch to demo mode in X days. Please activate." If its switching to demo mode without a warning, either there is a real billing issue with the current payment or there is some unexpected condition occuring. In either case you should contact support to verify the circumstances. We have had at least a few cases where people cancelled their payment (unknowingly) leading to this issue. Of course if its a bug we'll fix it promptly.

I don't think they thought of everything. For the 20th time when I turn on my workstation and start Sonar Platinum, it has started in demo mode. The only way to get running is the CCC and get on line and launch. I have to run a 40 foot cat 5 cable down the hall to do this. The error in about sonar is (40,-2) I'm loosing faith and confidence in this business model. I am an annual membership customer by the way.

Hi Dan, here is what happened to me a few days ago. - I paid for 1 month of Platinum membership (on January 22) - I downloaded and installed all parts using C3 and activated Sonar and played with it multiple times (on a machine connected to internet). A few days ago Sonar went to DEMO mode while using it. Just without any apparent reason. If this happens again to me, I will report this as bug and provide you with serial numbers shown on "About" page as suggested earlier.

Hi Dan I did use a current internet connection to authorize. I plugged my DAW into the internet and used CCC. Are you telling me that if I authorized through CCC (which I did when I installed), I have to permanently remain on line? Even If I paid for the whole year?

Not sure if this is relevant or not whilst working on a project the CC Icon appeared in the lower part of my screen I saved and closed Platinum and there was the CC open. Most strange I am also on monthly. This happened within the last hour.

I didn't see him telling you this. Did Dan's instructions (#19) resolve the issue for you?

No Not until I get clarification that anyone who is NOT permanently on line has to install that way

Hi stonehedge, Yes, if your Sonar system is not connected to the internet you will need to use the offline authorization option.

Hi Ed, I just PM'ed you. Please contact me and we'll try and do some diagnostics. Once you have successfully authorized SONAR either by connecting to the internet from your main system OR by following the offline auth process, there is no further need to be online. Its a one time process if you have purchased an annual membership. If that is not the case then something is not working properly or your membership information is incorrect. Please contact me and we can figure it out.

Ed, As Noel said we'll look into this. Way it's supposed to work is that an annual purchase should never revert to demo. Apologies on the frustration this is causing. Rest assured we'll address this very soon. Keith
