Is there a way to hit record by remote? Sonar X1 Studio
I have my live room in my basement & my controll room on the 2nd floor. Kinda weird I know, but my house is pretty small & it's an inexpensive way I can achieve isolation. This is all fine & good if I'm recording someone else's band. When I'm recording pre pro & songwriting for my band Twin Fin it'd be cool to have a remote start/stop - save sorta thing. I have network access to the DAW from the basement. Would one of those control pad things I see in the shops do this? If possible I'd rather do it thru a laptop & the network.

- Tablet apps, in case you need feedback (status, time) you need MCU emulator
- Hardware controller connected to notebook, rtpMIDI in between. MCU or compatible (X-Touch) to get feedback
- Any remote desktop solution
- *exotic* web browser on any device (with one of my plug-in for Sonar), no feedback except status (REC/Stop highlight)
- *coming soon* any OSC based app (with another my plug-in for Sonar), with arbitrary feedback. That can take a while to make reasonable preset (for OSC app and matched inside the plug-in)

Check out remote desktop which is built into MS operating system. Basically, a remote device can take control of HOST computer where the screen and all the keys affect the programs running on the HOST pc. I think you need the PROFESSIONAL version of your OS on the host machine to make this work. I use an old SURFACE (the RT) model to control my Sonar over WIFI. Jim

this may or may not work. while remote desktop worked fine when using Sonar to record audio only, I ran into troubles with MIDI ports.

Here are some links and content I distilled from a quick search through forum threads/posts: http://blog.cakewalk.com/new-v-control-pro-ipad-controller-for-sonar/Novation Automap http://saitarasoftware.com/Site/AC-7_Core.html "adding wireless problems" - If you're concerned about this, you can use the AC-7 Core wired instead. It needs a few extra bits and pieces though... The connection goes: iPad -> iPad Camera Connection Kit (USB) -> USB to MIDI cable (M-Audio Uno or Cakewalk UM-1G for example) -> spare MIDI In and Out on your system It then functions the same as a hardware unit with no wifi latency etc. http://level6productions.com/ I (not me but the guy who wrote this) have eyoControl, V-Control Pro 1 and AC-7 Core. All work well. (V-Control Pro 1 doesn't use rtpMIDI, they have their own sw for that) Anyways - I hope something in the above fits the bill for you. I would imagine by now there are a bunch of other control apps, as well. Bob Bone

I went a different route. I used the Korg USB nanoKontrol (here is a link to the latest version - http://www.korg.com/us/products/controllers/nanokontrol2/). Basically a USB cable from the computer to the nanoKontrol and I can control record, playback, mute, arm for recording, volume and pan. The new version also has a solo button. This has worked well for me. The nanoKontrol is less then $60 on Amazon. Just a thought...

Yeah - WAY kewl. I pulled the info I posted from threads that went back a couple years or so, and I would imagine there are now lots of ways to accomplish the goal, yours being one of them. Now I am going to have to expand to where I NEED something like this, DOH!!! :) Bob Bone

I have secondary wired console in my vocal booth, but if I am in the performance room I use Windows Remote Desktop. Yes, Pro is required on both PCs. I can drive the DAW from anywhere in the house except where WiFI is spotty.
