I've been away from the forum for a while so this is the first tune of your's that I'm hearing.  While it's obviously a very original and creative tune, I personally don't think the mix is doing it or your voice justice.  I'm not sure if it's a matter of level or something else, but I'd suggest starting with vocal level.  Just my humble opinion.

Thank you, String Jammer and philz, for your kind remarks and advice. Mixing is something I'm (obviously) not too good at, and I'm hoping to improve by taking everybody's suggestions to heart.

Hi Laura, full marks for originality as usual. You can hear that you are having a good time doing your very creative best.

I just heard the last 5th version, and I'd vote for turning the bass down just a little. It will give the higher frequencies more space to shine.

I'd also take a look at how you are processing your cymbals / hi hats. Do you have a flanger on them? What plugins are on them? And, pretty important - are you starting your recordings in 16 bit or 24 bit?   44.1 or 48 or 88.2?   What kind of soundcard are you using?

I'd recommend starting in 24 bit / 44.1   but others may think . . . otherwise. When you export your "entire mix" does it go to .wav, or to a .mp3? If mp3, are you exporting it to mp3 128??? that would flange everything up a bit for sure.

Sorry for all the numbers, I'm kind of curious about your setup and process, because something sounds a little overprocessed and your songs are just too good not to optimize.

cheers,
-Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the kind critique and for the thoughtful questions you asked.

You're absolutely right with your comment about the over-processed sound - I did try to correct that from mix #4 to mix #5 but my impatience and well, crummy ears got in my way and this one ended up being not very good. It may be time for me to reconsider this whole recording thing.

Thanks again for taking the time and trouble. I appreciate it very much.

Everyone's got you covered as regards the mix, so I'll just say I really enjoyed the song, very individual and creative.

Very quirky and cool Ms Lampshade.
Mixwise, I would like to hear the vocal with less reverb and up in the mix

Ms Lampshade -

agree very quirky, nice performances

mix really needs some adjustments (vocals too processed/wet, overall mix too compressed, guitars too loud)

song is pretty cool, tho!  performances are good!

Hi again everybody,
Thank you again for all your help. I tried to take your advice again, and here is what came out:
https://soundcloud.com/laura-thomson-723335445/you-better-move-in-july-2016-h
https://soundcloud.com/laura-thomson-723335445

There's less compression, guitars, bass and reverb on the voice and more volume on the drums and voice. Here's hoping!

Thank you all again for putting up with this!

Thanks so much, Allan. I guess I've lost some confidence lately... maybe it's better to take the plunge and record/post something else soon. Or not.

There's lots lined up to do; I just don't know any more if any of it is any good. My ears seem to be leaky and the stuff I have on deck seems to be suspiciously weak.

My Grade 1 or 2 teacher wrote on my report card:
"[She] should not worry so much about making mistakes." Yikes.

I appreciate your support more than you know.

In a just world...you (and me) would be a known singer/songwriter.  But I'm sure I don't have to tell ya -- ain't no justice in the music world.

Cool odd-ball tune. Enjoyed the composition as well as your performance. Don't think I've heard anything like this before - it has that strange vibe like a Jane Siberry (not that it sounds like her). Enjoyed Shadow Boarder as well!

Love it.  Nice guitar work, and the claps.  This could easily be used for a dating sight, or matrimony site.  Excellent 3X!

Very original.  Still can't get over the awesome guitar.  I think I would move in with you, right now.  I can cook, and I'm handy, but I'm allergic to cats.  That was great.  Bookmarking your SC page right now.

Hey Lizzie, if that is you, I have seen your brain.  If it is not you, well, I have seen your whole life.  If I am Lizzie, then I didn't know until now.

You have a great brain.

And you music is cool.

You are obviously taking a breath, so when you exhale, post another song Laura.

Allan, Mannynyagain and Jesse Screed,

I can't thank you enough for all the encouragement and the smiles. It's meant a lot to me.
Now, as a punishment :), I'm about to take a deep breath and post a new (some-kinda) song.
Uh-oh! :)
