UPDATE:
MOTU support thinks that me and one other person (maybe you Rob?) are the only ones seeing this problem. I don't think anything is going to happen too quickly with this - esp if they can't reproduce the problem.

that could well be the case - if we are the only ones who bought the AVB to be used with windows ;-)

joking aside, this could also be a win 10 / USB controller issue ... BUT I have 3 different machines (totally different hardware) and I have seen this on either one (when using this particular driver i.e. there were occasions when the device was not recognized until after a DAW reboot and device reboot)

anyway, I keep researching as there are some other minor oddities (that occasional error code 0x80070426 and that 2nd ESI MIDI device that also does not always show up)

John, Steve,

I think I figured out a way to fix this whenever it happens using a simple double click on a shortcut that executes a one line script...

In case one of you wants to try this, please PM me. As the problem happens like 1 out of 30 times it's hard to reproduce and before I post the quick fix, I'd like to make sure it works (I just did a ton of reboots to get the problem twice and both time the script fixed it without requiring any reboots etc )

I just PMd you - I'll try it.

I'd say if I reboot 10 times I'll get at least one "bad" one ;-)

I've just changed over from a Intel USB port to a ASMedia one - but I don't think that will change anything...

Did it work for you? Seems to be a feasible workaround here (fixed it again this morning) ...

BTW, just got a note from MOTU that they may have identified the problem, and I'm supposed to get a beta driver to check it out.

Meanwhile there also appeared a new driver version on http://motu.com/avb/index.html: MOTU AVB Installer v4.0+71271 (Release Date 2016-09-20) but I think this pre-dates their most recent troubleshooting (release news are identical to the Sep. 1 driver, so they might just have hiked build number and release date to match the most recent Mac version???)

Re: MOTU AVB series 2016/10/14 07:25:12 (permalink)
I got the batch file going - but it's not working reliably.

It does not take me long to get a failure - once every 3 or 4 boots

The devcon command doesn't work with the full device ID - so I had to use a wildcard, and it restarts my MOTU MIDI interfacs as well as the Ultralite. That's OK though.

I used "devcon restart USB\VID_07FD*"

I've tried the new driver - and if anything it is *worse*.
Before - after a few times where the Control Panel default device was set for Out 1-24 rather than Out 1-2, and the devices were set at 48KHz rather than 44.1 KHz (I don't know if it matters much - but when I fixed them, it made things work) - then the batch file worked sometimes, and other times I had to run it twice.

I updated the batch file to restart the device, pause then do it again - but now with that new driver, even this does not work! No devices.
It seems like each new driver version gets worse for me!

I got a message from MOTU about new beta drivers and maybe a fix - so we'll see.
I wish this batch file was working all the time - because it's muxh easier than rebooting and pulling cables.

I can't play much now until next week - but I'll keep in touch...

Sorry to hear. I had hoped it would work in your case, too, but it looks like your system is more affected by this than my DAW. I don't get the problem as often, and the script pretty much cured it for the time being.

Thanks for trying but I didn't expect that to be of much help as the release date of that driver pre-dates our support enquiries ...

Sorry for the delay in replying to the thread. I  will be reporting this to MOTU today. I am having similar symptoms and the only things I know is that it never seems to happen when the interface and computer are up and running. I can work all day either in a DAW or just playing music, YouTube etc and I never get the failure. It's a reboot that makes things sick, at least for my system.
And like others have said, it takes various methods to get it back working again. The same method may not work two times in a row.

Very weird.
One question, anyone with this problem running an iLok?
I am. The original blue version with the latest drivers.

Steve,
Your symptoms are exactly the same as mine.
I'm running ilok - but it's a ilok 2.

This must be a win10 / AVB driver issue.  Good thing is that MOTU is indeed on this, so please report this, Steve, and they'll probably also give you access to a driver update which "may" fix this (should be available soon)...

I wish the batch file worked. I'm gonna play around when I get a chance and see if there is anything besides "restart" that you can do. Otherwise - at least the Sept 1 driver usually worked OK after one or two "pokes" with the batch file.

Maybe the "fix" will work - but I'm not getting my hopes up ;-)

I'll try to sneak it in tomorrow. They mention uninstalling in add/remove programs first. I've never done this before installing a new driver - I wonder...

Yes, I got the link, just set a restore point and installed as instructed i.e. including uninstalling the old one first... it does look good on my end. Played drums and piano via direct monitoring using the AVB while having the DAW boot about 20 times and it got it right every time. Fingers crossed. I will have it in use extensively in the next few days so anymore issues will show.

I hope it does work on your system😎

I’ve got the beta drivers installed too, and first impressions are very good. It hasn’t failed yet and I’ve rebooted a dozen times.

I’ll use it through the week – and let you know if I have any problems at all.
It is definitely better than “MOTU Pro Audio Installer 4.0 (71271)” – for connection problems at least. I’ll double check that performance etc is OK – through the week.

Fingers crossed indeed!

Same impression here. Worked all day so far (did a number of unnecessary reboots to push it) ... it will see heavy use in the coming days, so if there are issues, they should show up ... will get back here if problems arise.

BTW, try running at low buffer to make it work hard and see if it performs better than the USB driver from spring that you used before... I can run it at <4ms RTL for almost everything. Only NI drumlab made me go up a bit...

For the record, the new beta driver that we received from support fixed the connection issues. The problem has not occurred again since installing the driver 5 days ago.

Re: MOTU AVB series 2016/10/20 04:39:13 (permalink)
Same here. I haven't had any connection problems with the new driver - and my system was worse than Robs.

I'll update my MOTU support incident - and keep an eye on it, but I'm hopeful that we've got a solid driver now ;-)
I'm not seeing better performance (which has always been fine) just a solution for the connection problem.

=======================================
only slightly related

I continuously try to find ways to get my PC to run on buffer sizes smaller than 128 samples. (this gives me 8ms RTL in SONAR, which is fine, but I'm always trying to do better - especially for tracking guitar parts through am sims).
Settings at 64 buffers have never worked for me - but curiously, I get better results at 32 samples than at 64 (?)
I still get too much "crackling" at the 32 sample settings (with different safety offset settings) but I don't get the pegged meters and distorted audio like at 64 sample settings.
I wonder if this has to do with which plugins are running in SONAR?

Have you tried the standalone versions to check if they run at lower buffers than VSTs in Sonar?
I can do most of my work on 128 sample buffer @ 96 kHz, which translates to a 64 sample buffer @ 44.1 kHz, giving about 4-6 ms RTL depending on safety offset ... yet I did not use many amp sims lately and I realized that some Kontakt instruments (like e.g. Drum Lab which is a ROMpler and don't think should need much processing) only work at double ASIO buffers (i.e. like the settings you are using) ...

Maybe it's Kontakt - I always have at least one instance of it.

might be worth giving this a bit of test and find out more ... Kontakt is behaving like a little princess compared to those other work horses in the stable.

BTW, I really dig the AVB now. Drum tracking with IO coming in via ADAT and 2 AVB works like charm, perfect clock sync ... the routing is a bit intimidating first, but once you got everything labelled in the AVB control software, it is really easy to handle ... save / recall including channel labelling all the way into Sonar IO channels is really cool when go you from multi mic'd drum tracking to working on some jingle stuff by yourself within a minute ...

I tried a few things without Kontakt.
buffers = 64 is still funny. Different songs are different. Sometimes there is a feedback loop where the meters are pegged and it whines, sometimes it's silent and sometimes it's just crackly. Sometimes it's silent when you load something in SONAR, then changes (for the better) if you change the buffer or offset - while everything is loaded.

buffers - 32 is definitely not worse. If anything it's more consistent, and just crackles (it doesn't do the silence or feedback howls)

Maybe it all depends on the combination of buffers and offset. I know with the older driver and using the windows app - it wouldn't let you do certain combinations without a warning.

Nothing works reliably until I go to 128 buffers and 48 offset. That's 8ms RTL in SONAR (it used to be 7.8ms with the old driver) and is workable - so I stick with that.
I'll play with this every once in a while - but it gets boring (especially after rebooting dozens of times recently while testing this newest driver) and I'd rather just get on with playing than troubleshooting all the time ;-)

The new MOTU driver has been released today. Looks like it fixes the "not detecting device on reboot" problem. Here is the description from the webpage:

yes. this is the driver build (71418) I have been using for 2 weeks now (received as beta) and it does fix the detection problems at reboot.

Yep - I guess this is the same as the "beta" we've been using. Works fine here ;-)
