Midi patch changes

When I insert a midi file I go through the steps of using TTS-1 as my default sound for playback. I'd like to change the midi drum patch in the TTS-1 to addictive drums for example. I can only see a way of changing the drum sounds within the TTS-1 patch. How do I change the drums (channel 10) to go outside of TTS-1? Or any other instrument outside of TTS-1 in any track when working with midifiles? Thanks in advance.

Right click the midi track and choose Replace Synth.

If the notes are all in one track and only differentiated by channel (i.e. Type 0 MIDI file), you will need to split out the channel 10 events to another track that has its output set to Addictive Drums (after inserting AD in the Synth rack with appropriate audio output tracks). You can do this for all channels at once using Process > Run CAL > Split Channel to Tracks. Or you can select the whole clip, and then use Select > By Filter to select only channel 10, and cut-paste only that selection to another MIDI track.

Note, if you use the CAL (Cakewalk Application Language) script, you will probably want to create the target tracks in advance. CAL has not been supported for a long time, and has some quirks when run in newer versions; one of them is that target tracks may not be created correctly.

Another caveat: The mapping of drum notes in a General MIDI file probably won't match AD's default mapping for all kit pieces, and you'll need to drag parts to different note numbers in the Piano Role View or assign a GM map in AD's GUI to get the right sounds.

You'll also want to look into setting the output of the MIDI track to an AD map that puts the kit piece names in the drum pane of the PRV so that you can see what's what.

Lots to learn to make it all work.
