James - this is really cool - you are talented on so many different levels. I'm never sure what to expect fom you - but whatever it is - it's magnificent - and this certainly is that.

Love it bro.

Wow James, you nailed it and then some, I am MOST impressed! Listening again.....
I too caught some Zappa-esque influence in there but the overall feel is Dan to the max (I'm a huge Dan fan), indeed, at first I thought Fagen was guesting on the vocal.
I could go on and on, but I'd rather listen again.
Superb job bud!!!

lol...you hit the target on the James...that lil bridge was killer before the stop and pop. I hear what you were saying on your chops but only because I am a fan-boy and i know what you can do....but to be honest it didnt' at all hurt this tune until the ending "again and again" part...

Great job on the arraignment and I am sure it was a PITA but heck...it was the lifeblood of this tune.

Glad you found time to jump in and play/record which I always enjoy!! Great job...

Hope you're well bro.

Thanks Lynn. Your ideas weren't used, but they did inspire me to go in the direction I did. As always, I appreciate your input.

Thank Tom. It was a long time coming with this track, and I think I just finished it out of exhaustion.

SD was so good at recording that the mixing was probably the easiest part of the process.

I've said it before:  it confounds me how so many people comment on his influence on my stuff despite the fact I never listened to Zappa!

James,
That is quite a tune.  The vocals are so SD it gave me chills.  Great tribute with a lot of cool twists, what fun.  Sounded great on my system!  WOW is way too much of an understatement for this thing but I can't even find enough words to go there.  Great work!

Gracias! Glad it sounded good (since I always hate the sound of my songs by the time I am done with them!)

Just catching up on the Songs forum by randomly picking threads starting on the second page.  Glad I picked this one!    As another long-time SD fan I just love the way this turned out.    It's got the SD vibe nailed IMO with a little Zappa-esque parts thrown in for good measure.   Like Steely Zappa or Zappa Dan.

It is a bit creepy how much you sound like Fagen in spots though - he has such an unusual voice.   Along with the composition and arrangement the whole piece just sings.

I really tried to emulate Fagen's style: like me, he has a somewhat unpleasant voice, except that he really knows how to use it.

Thanks for the bump

James,

Prodigious simulation of SD songwriting, playing, singing, recording. The vocal sound & phrasing, Fender Rhodes, and GTR are very close to the original. Apparently you have internalized their entire catalog.

I have no idea how you did it,

Cheers,

Bert

There's a ton of SD songs mashed in my mind with this track:
Peg with my Michael McDonald-esqe bgvocals in the chorus
My Old School with the lyrics
Reelin in the Years with the guitar vamps
Hey Nineteen verse melody

I spent an extraordinary amount of time on this tune. Probably too many stop/starts but those transitions are too cool to avoid.

James,
If you must internalize and subsequently channel anyone's oeurve, then it would be hard to top the massively cool work of Steely Dan.

Day duh bomb!

Cheers,

Bert

James - That was cool!  Very complex song and arrangement.  I liked the horns and the horn arrangement - that stuff takes time to put together!  Your voice and the vocal effects were cool too.  You definitely nailed the SD vibe!
