[Solved] Theme Editor ?s from Current Producer User | *Updated* ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've used Sonar since v2, always at its top tear level. But since x3 changed to its current product line iteration (Artist, Professional, Platinum) I moved to the middle tear because the main difference is a lot of plugins that I already had earlier versions of or didn't care about. These last few versions have shaved the color schemes down to the point that they're not really terribly useful. Mainly, I want to get back to a lighter (as in "more bright") version of a theme. I strongly dislike the black(ish) background of the clips in the track view. I hate how dark and murky Sonar has become, w/ no way to substantially change it. I want the default clip background to be pale white, or light gray. It drives me nuts that there is no way to change this. I don't care about changing bitmaps/png backgrounds, button states, et cetera. But I would love a theme that didn't look a melted box of brown & black crayons. I don't really want to spend the $200 or whatever just to get the ability to make a "light" theme that, you know, is actually based on a lighter color scheme (rather than just brightening the clip foreground color). But, say that I did. Can I actually make a lighter theme with the editor? Can I change every aspect of the GUI, or just the same ones I have access to with the color picker? Or, even better, can someone make a lighter theme and share it with those of us w/ Professional? If I don't care about background images, or most of the features I'm seeing in the videos for the editor, are there more varied themes coming for the rest of us?

The best option for X series SONAR is Duckbar a free utility (registration required to download). The themes created by the theme editor will not work in version prior to SONAR 2016.06. WRT the theme editor, it goes beyond the color picker in preferences, it exposes many of the images used in SONAR. However, It is not a trivial matter to create an entire new theme and it helps to be familiar with an image editor. The theme editor requires a third party image editor to edit images. The most recent uploads at the Cakewalk Youtube site discuss the theme editor.

Did you read what I wrote? I'm not looking to update an earlier version. I'm wondering if a theme created in the theme editor (which can only be used in Platinum) can be used in Professional (or Artist)? I don't care about editing the backgrounds. I want to know if I can change clip background colors. And, actually, the track view background to something not murky would swell. As I said, I did watch the videos but they did not specifically address my questions.

Yes but I did tire out somewhere in the middle. There is no SONAR Producer ATM. I guess that is what confused me about your post. The current product line is SONAR Artist/ Professional/Plantinum. The last version of SONAR Producer was SONAR X3 Producer. There was a recent post about clip colors here http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3455137

I saw that post but it does not answer the questions that I asked. I edited my post to reflect the most current nomenclature of the various Sonar products. You're right, I did call it the wrong thing; however I would have thought the context, as well as my first sentence, would have made it clear. Here's the tl:dr version Can a theme created in the theme editor be used in Professional (most recent version) version? Can the clip background colors be changed?

If the version you have does not have a "themes" option under preferences I think you are out of luck. If it does, you should try and D/L one of the users modified themes and see for yourself.

Some themes have been posted in the software forum (As theme editor is a separate piece of software), in the stickie at the top. There's not a light version yet. But should let you find out if they are compatible with Professional ampfixer If the version you have does not have a "themes" option under preferences I think you are out of luck. If it does, you should try and D/L one of the users modified themes and see for yourself.
Out of interest, do you get both Mercury and Tungsten listed under Preferences? Or is it just Tungsten for other levels?

haha. Thanks dude whose first post is to tell me the most obvious solution to my problem and get it wrong. @Kamikazi I have both of the themes. And I'm sticking w/ Mercury as I don't dig the Great Pumpkin vibe of Tungsten. I see that Anderton is working on some lighter stuff, so I'm about to see if I can install that one w/ the lighter toolbar. Let's see...

So, Okay... from viewing this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqZO4qWVg88 and looking at my own setup... I'm going to spitball & say that if one is running Sonar Profession, Artist -- we are stuck w/ the 2 standard themes. Since I have no edit button there's no way to open and install themes. There's a /SONAR Themes/ folder in my /Cakewalk Content/ folder. but alas copying Craig's "Mercury with White Control Bar.sth" does nothing. Sad trombone. Ah well. That's too bad. I was hoping to get a new silver white, or pale white theme to use. I'll put in a feature request. I'll check in here after the updates. Thanks for the good faith replies y'all.

I don't have Professional or Artist, but if you can use other themes, and if it works the same way as Platinum, since you copied the "Mercury with White Control Bar" into the SONAR Themes folder, check if the theme appears in the Theme: drop-down menu. You don't need the Edit button to open Themes, it's for opening Themes directly within the Theme Editor, which is Platinum only.

I think TE should have been a stand-alone add-on purchase for all 3 Sonars.

As a work around I think you can rename the new theme as one of the default themes and "fool" Sonar into using it. Be sure to hide the original default themes in another folder 1st.

Kamikaze I don;t know where the default themes are kept, or of they are available. I don't think they're accessible, the default UI is in a file called TTSImage.dll, and the user themes override it.

Perhaps it was the most recent update, or perhaps I had done it wrong initially, but I put your white control bar theme in /Cakewalk Content/Themes/ and lo it showed up in the Preferences | Theme menu. So, thanks, Craig. & Thanks Cake, for making themes available to all of us, even if we don't want to design them.

I like a lighter look myself. I've found that you can lighten things up and all looks good until you touch something and then it goes to very dark (track lanes), and you can't really see what you're editing, or it's bright white. Haven't figured out how to fix that. I'm just real tired of fixing DAWs. It does sort of seem like this is a business strategy of Cakewalk's. Break something, then dole out crippled fixes that you have to pay for. Actually, they've done this same color dance in the past. Don't remember which version, but we've been down this road before. Here's a lighter one I was screwing around with.

timidi It does sort of seem like this is a business strategy of Cakewalk's. Break something, then dole out crippled fixes that you have to pay for. It seems more like the business strategy is to remove something, then replace it later with something better. The Theme Editor offers a lot more flexibility than the colorizing options in SONAR 8.5. But I do think we need to give props to Panup, not so much because he came up with a solution (which of course was welcome), but because the interest in what he was doing showed that people really did want to be able to customize their interface. When Themania dies down, I suspect a lot of people are going to be using Mercury or Tungsten with just a few tweaks. However it's good to be able to make those tweaks. Creating a complete theme is not for the faint of heart. I've gone off in several different directions just to play with the Theme Editor, but ultimately, I've ended up with only one theme that I feel has real potential for completion, and could be genuinely useful alternative to Mercury or Tungsten.
