Please help , SONARPLT.exe

I have a big project which is about 45 minutes and obviously with lots of tracks, about 120 tracks. I froze most of the tracks to let the cpu works smoother. couple days ago i decided to add some strings and I opened new Kontakt 5 and load spitfire BML(violin and cello). I recorded some midi and every thing was fine and normal. I saved it and shutdown my PC. Next day I tried to load my project but as soon it loads, user account control pops up and says :
Program name : Fault Reporter.exe
Published: Unknown
File Origin: Hard drive on this computer
Program location: "c:\program files\ cakewalk\ shared utilities \............
and gives me and yes and no option.
after I press yes another error message pops up. It says SONARPLT.exe has stopped working and forces me to close the program.
I backed to the previews save before adding Kontakt, sonar started to work with no problem.
I have the latest version of Kontakt and my pc is updated. It doesn't show this behaviour with new project.
I really appreciate any help you can provide.

try holding down shift and starting sonar. that will let you know if a plug in is causing the issue.
you can always try re personalizing sonar as well if safe mode doesn't work.
Hold CTRL and open sonar. click yes to personalize sonar.
see if that solves your issue.

Thanks for you r reply. I tried both. Not working. Still get the error .
As I mentioned before if I delete the Kontakt, It will work. I don't understand whats going on. I have used Kontakt in this project with no problem. I don't know why it shows error now.

There is some thing I should add: I bought a SSD hard drive and moved some of my BML library to it to get more speed to load and read them. This behaviour happened after that. I am going to move them back to the old hard drive again and see what happened . I will report it as soon as i move them back.

Ok I moved all the BML Library from new SSD to The Old hard drive. Problem solved but it takes time to load my vst because it is so heavy. Thats why i bought a SSD hard drive.
Still I don't understand why adding SSD hard drive cause this issue?
My C DRIVE is SSD too but never had this problem. The new one i bought is just for my vet's Library.
Any Help?

what kind of hard drive is the new SSD ?
who is it made by ? where did you get it ?

I ask because of bought some less than stellar SSD's (bargin type brand) thinking an SSD is an SSD.
how ever, I have had better results with a name brand like PNNY or Crucial.

what brand is your C drive as well ? (your other SSD)

It is not that you added an SSD, but that you moved something to the new SSD, that the system was looking for in the old location. Each new drive is assigned a new drive letter, and the system keeps track of what is where by which drive letter it is located under. You can fool the system into thinking the stuff is at the old location by using a symlink, but it would be better if you just changed the location to expect to find the file in the program that is looking for it. I have no idea what a BML library is, but whatever program uses it is getting confused because it expects to find it in the old location.

Thanks Slartibartfast for your advice. BML is a set of Strings orchestra from Spitfireaudio Company . It is a Kontakt library and after i moved it to another location on my new SSD , when i run the project again, akontakt couldn't find it and asked me to show the location that the library exist.I browsed it and it found all the Library. but still  shows error and some times sonar doesn't show any error but there is no sound come out of my speakers. meters are showing something is playing but no sound.

there might be some helpful info here to read / or share:

this is an ongoing thread related to crashes with Kontakt in sonar. it might be un related but it couldn't hurt to see if any of these issues pertain to you.

Hi Reza,

Did you follow through fault reporter and log a problem reporter case? If so please list the case number since we can look at the dump file produced. If not can you share a link to the minidump file generated from that session?
Here is a KB article explaining how to get a dump file when SONAR crashes.

  1. Open the Run Command by holding down the "windows" key on your keyboard and pressing "r"
  2. Type in the following: %appdata%\Cakewalk
  3. Click [OK]
  4. Navigate to your Cakewalk program's  folder
  5. Navigate to the Minidumps folder
  6. Locate the .dmp files within.
The .dmp files all should contain a timestamp of the time of the crash. So if it is 2/1/2011 at 10:26 am, your file should contain a title similar to "02012011_102620.dmp". This can be useful for locating the correct .dmp file if there are multiple listed.

The crash is in your VS700 driver not in SONAR so there isn't much we can do to help here.
You can try opening the project with the a different audio device or try a different driver mode.

Thanks Noel
After some searching I found out others have same issue with vs700. So as Roland stopped supporting vs700 technically I will have this kind of issues in future. I am thinking to buy a protools HD card and Apogee symphony to run Sonar on them. I was told it is possible run Apogee in this way on PC, But I am still searching to find a proper solution.
Anyway thanks again for your following up.

Its unfortunate that they don't keep the drivers current. However I know of many users who still use the VS-700 successfully so someone may have additional tips for you. Are you running the latest drivers? It may be worth trying to uninstall and reinstall the driver to make sure its set up right.

Were you able to load your project after switching out of ASIO mode (maybe MME or WDM)? You can also try loading the project after unplugging the device.

Yes I tried to run my project on WDM , same issue. I also did uninstall and reinstall the latest version but no difference.
I ended up to unload the KONTAKT and try in different way.
Again thanks for your following up.

Hmm if removing Kontakt fixed the crash it would seem to imply that loading the project with Kontakt was corrupting memory and causing the driver to crash. Memory corruption can lead to some unpredictable crashes like that.

I also have a history of Kontakt messing up some projects, which with the help of Noel and Cakewalk staff got traced to the VS700 (and also Octa-Capture) driver crashing, thus crashing Sonar.

When researching NI forum (long time ago) I came across a "known" issue with these Roland drivers, which never got addressed properly from either side (neither NI nor Roland) - VS700 is no legacy, so no hope there from Roland ... don't think NI will care much about an issue with a legacy driver, either. Bad luck.

However, experiencing that problem (not regularly but still a couple of times in recent years) I developed some habits when using Kontakt to avoid this - and what helped a lot was to freeze Kontakt ASAP i.e.
  • use several Kontakt instances just using a single instrument (instead of one with many instruments) so you can freeze/unfreeze per instrument
  • freeze before you save and exit (which will avoid this fail upon project open issue you just experienced)
  • maybe these days you can synth record and simply archive original Kontakt tracks for faster workaround (but that you might have to test carefully, not sure if it works as good as the other workaround)

Thanks guys for your information. So what is the best option now for me to choose a good converter? I don't mind to spend around 4k but I really want to get something with no hustle and good support.  As I said I was told there is a possibility to run sonar on apogee symphony connected to protools HD card on PC. Is that true?
I need minimum 8 XRL in and 8 Out (any type). It seems the best quality and affordable unit in market is apogee. I am not sure if I am right or wrong.

For 2K you get a superb interface from RME or the latest MOTU - both with excellent drivers and more I/O than you specified.  For 4K you might even be able to aim higher e.g. interfaces from Lynx ...

Between Lynx and Apogee which one you recommend ? quality and stability.

sorry, i'm the wrong person to ask as I own/use neither of the two - maybe post in the hardware forum to get feedback from people who owned one of these devices for a while ...

Hi. Sorry for just jumping in, but. I have the RME Ucx.
If you have the opportunity to buy RME, you will not be disappointed. Low latency, and very stable drivers.
Mine has not given me a single problem in the year or so I have had it.
This might very well be my last AI ever
All the best.
