I used the Melda Multiband convolution verb on the mix.

If you haven't seen/heard it, check out the Miktek CV4. Variable pattern tube mic (company based out of Nashville) Amazingly versatile. Sounds great on just about anything (VOs, Vocals, Ac Gtr, El Gtr cab, etc) Not overly exaggerated on the tube vibe. On guitar cab, it's particularly surprising... as it maintains that aggressive character you'd typically associate with a dynamic mic (albeit with more detail - which you'd expect from a condenser).

I wanted to pickup a world-class LDC... and was leaning toward a U87. Consulted with my buddy Stuart at Sweetwater... and he suggested the CV4. Read a bunch of positive reviews/comments... and decided to give it a whirl. Even though it's a variable pattern tube mic, tonally it's in the same ballpark as the U87 (albeit with more versatility). The CV4 isn't as dark sounding as a C12... but it reminds me of that mic in that it's not overly bright... but still captures a very detailed sound.

https://youtu.be/e5XLj59qJTo Jim, this is a vid showing a recent recording using a MXL Mogami Edition V69 tube mic and the crackle I get. I'm sure lots of tube mics don't do this, but I thought I'd post it in case you have any thoughts. For this reason, I'm a bit nervous about tube mics. This is my only tube mic.

This'll be fun (but I might need a moment to recover LOL).... I had a pair of C414b/uls and every time I hear a track with them, I think, "man, I gotta find one or two!" Mine went away in the 2008 foreclosure debacle along with my other 36 studio mics. Highly recommended! I don't know about the current versions, but wouldn't hesitate on the C414b/uls version, at all. Of my current list(8), I would highly recommend the CAD E100s (mine needs repair. It's superbly quiet), the Mojave MA200, the ADK Thor and I am really pleased with my MA101FET, AKG C480b/uls CK61, and Beyer M160 (not a figure 8 -you'd need an M130 for that). They all make me feel great on playback! I did also own a U87 and think, now, I'd either go Pearlman, Peluso (any two will match according to them)or get a pair of the new Warm Audio WA87 ($600!)when they come out. Can't wait to hear/try them! And they're multipatterns! Good luck! Michael

I would definitely get fussy about that crackling sound. It's certainly *not* expected result/behavior from a tube mic. A bad pre-amp tube can cause similar noises. You've probably heard this with a guitar amp that needed new pre-amp tube/s. In the guitar amp, the noise would be louder (more obnoxious) due to it being amplified. If you haven't already, I'd replace the 12at7 tube (~$20)

I've got a pair of C414-XLS mics. Very versatile... and sound good on many sources If you ever record drum kit, they're stellar as overheads.

Cool thanks, Jim. I've replaced the tube over and over. If I'm causing the problem, I don't know how. Because it isn't really reliable, I mostly leave the Mic on the shelf.

Yes and no. It doesn't seem related to the tube. Power supply? Some days it doesn't make any noise. I have sometimes thought it was preamp related. Maybe humidity? I just don't know. Maybe I'll try one more new tube. I think I've gone through four.

A really versatile mic is the Microtech Geffel M930. Another LDC but in a small body that will fit inside your palm so it can be placed almost anywhere. Very even and transparent. Another one I'm looking at is the new Warm Audio 87. I should get one in next month and will let y'all know what I think. If it is anywhere near as good as the Neumann, for $600 it should be a no-brainer.

Looking into my first foray into more expensive mics and looking at the CAD E100S but compared to mics of similar cost it's way heavier. E100S 610g C214 280g AT4033 380g MK4 485g KSM32 490g My current mics (SM57/58) are 284/298g so the E100S is more than x2 heavier. I'm a little worried about mic boom droop or balance issues. Is this a problem for mics that heavy? Should I be concerned? I'm currently using stackable Ultimate stands with the round heavy lead bottoms. Any insight you're willing to share? Thx!

I don't have any round based stands.... been a long time, too. The stand will take the weight, it's the tipping over part, that is the rub. I suppose weights around the bottom might help, but I gave up and went to tripods with weights on them(had some quadpods too, but sold them). Now I have triangular heavily weighted stands; OnStage SMS7650's https://on-stage.com/products/view/12624/117506.... and it's the quality of the mic clip/shock mount. You have to be able to tighten them and have them "stay put". Mic droop is annoying at the least and dangerous at the worst. My OnStage stereo mic bars suck at that and I will have to get K&M or something. Michael

Penti, The link doesn't with for me.
I have not yet regretted a Mic for weight.
That said I do need some new shock mounts.
Stands can usually be tightened to do the job. A sand bag for exceptional cases, but make sure it is in the car before you need it.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StuBoomWOn Stage SMS7650 Stands and clips or shock mounts need to be tighten-able. If I mount 2 on the stereo bars they lean and I cannot seem to fix them in place. It is double the weight though. Michael
