Is there a noise profiler and noise remover plugin within Sonar Platinum ?
Do we have a noise profiler and noise remover plugin within Sonar ? Something like whats built-in within, say, Audacity ? Now I know plugins like Waves and others, so please I am not looking for suggestions to buy new plugins. All I need to know is if there is any within Sonar that I am missing / overlooking.

Audacity's Noise Reduction effect is in essence a multi-band digital noise gate. Similar results may be possible using a multiband EQ like the QCEQ in the PC. Or the Sonitus Gate side chained through the Sonitus EQ.

I think the op is talking about a feature where the program takes a "noiseprint" from a section of a clip that doesn't have signal (e.g., hiss, hum, or any constant undesired sound), then subtracts that from the entire clip.

Spot on there Craig. That's exactly what I am looking for. The key is "...entire clip." Its not about removing noise sections alone. The "noiseprint" as you say or noise profile gets removed from the whole clip including where its mixed with the main signals. Can't fathom that when some free and low-end applications have this quick feature, why can't this be included in Sonar. One can argue that why don't I just get this done in other applications. Well, two reasons : 1. Its hinders workflow and consistency. 2. I tried this for a clip in Audacity and found that some change / artifacts in the resulting sound occurs which I am sure won't happen if done within Sonar due to Sonar's much superior sound engine. We sure need to have this in Sonar.

So you are opposed to using a currently available free 3rd party plug-in? Artifacts are a byproduct of this type of processing.

I am not opposed to using external plugins Steve. Its just that having it within Sonar will surely make workflow and quality of the output much better. I seriously doubt if certain artifacts or audio inconsistencies that occur within external applications will occur if done within Sonar. As another instance, in another external application, I think audiodirector (of cyberlink) a small yet significant lag got created in the timeline of my audio clip after I did some processing which was completely non-time related. Now, if I could get to do the same processing within Sonar, such a thing would most definitely not occur.

The answer is this type of software does not come cheap https://www.izotope.com/en/products/repair-and-edit/rx.html This is why Sonar does not include it,, the price of Sonar would double. The tool for the job is found in many Wave editors, Audacity is free so you really can't expect it to include a $300 plug in. And the way it works is you add a Wave editor to your tool menu and this will be integrated into Sonar and your workflow will not be slowed down.

Sorry there. You have any suggestions for available good free plugins that perform reasonably well ? I know they may not be near as good as a $300 plugin, but if it betters my workflow and consistency, I will give it a try before splurging big bucks on the likes of izotope and equivalent.

AFAIC the best program by far for serious restoration is iZotope RX, but even that can't violate the laws of physics. Remember Anderton's First Law of Noise Reduction: "Noise reduction is most effective on audio that doesn't have a lot of noise in the first place."

I meant to say it didn't work probably because it was external and created inconsistencies which may not occur if such a feature was available within Sonar. Anyways, having said that, I am inclined to agree that free or low-priced plugins may not near perform as well as say, an izotope plugin costing a few hundred $s. But right now, I am not prepared to put any money on new plugins. I am trying to make the best use of whats available and included in my arsenal. Thanks for the suggestion of adding a wave editor to the Tools (or Utilities) menu. I just looked it up and guess it involves adding/modifying items in the windows registry. Will try that if I can muster the will.

Adding any external program to the SONAR menu requires a registry entry but I tried to make the process easier with a program available on the Sonar Resources and Utilities thread called SONARToolEditor, direct link is here

+1 I believe the plug in pack for (De-click, Dialogue De-noise, De-hum, and De-clip) are only 129.99 USA bucks. Though I don't use the pack on newer recordings, a lot of my work is "Conversation work". I convert old 4 track, 8 track, 2 track cassette / 4 track, 8 track, 2 track reel / 8 track 1/2 inch reel tape to digital files. I own a slew of old machines. problem is keeping up on their maintenance. but a few years back I stocked up on belts and capstan motors and do my own repairs. Back to RX, I use it to clean up old tape recordings and it does a great job. I got to a point where studio hours were running low. once the digital age took over, everyone had a studio in their living room. So I turned to conversation work. You'd be surprised how many people out there want to revisit old recordings but don't have the means to hear them. but when they can import these old multitrack recordings into a DAW, they are ecstatic (not to be confused with static = which is what most of the old 4 track recordings sound like before RX Unrelated: A list of some of my machines - Tascam 424MKII Tascam 464 Fostex X15 Tascam 488MKII Tascam 488 Tascam 388 Studio 8trk reel Akai GX-4000 Sony TC730 Tascam 38B

There are posts here on Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 which can be gotten for free. Adobe Audition 3.0 is included (32-bit) which has the noise reduction tool the OP is requesting. I launch Audition (I have v4.0) as my default wav editor from the Utilities menu in SONAR for this function religiously.
The CS2/Audition 3 option is a free option, but need to dig into the forums for that link.
Both iZotope RX and Adobe Audition seem to be the best options without artifacts.

This is what I use for a free solution. Results vary based on multiple factors, but it certainly create a profile and then you can adjust the floor of where it starts cutting that out.

A lite version of Sony's Sound Forge came with a Sony USB turntable I bought. I had helped a friend set his up and I was impressed at the ease of use factor for ripping old records. So I bought one for myself. I didn't expect free software that comes with a $120 turntable to be that good. But it totally removed the normal pops and crackles standard fare for vinyl. They got that one dialled in. Haven't tried it on recording noise yet because I haven't had a noisy project handed to me for a long time. Used to do a lot of that work but now I hide from those people.... I think I'll add it to my tools menu and give it a try.. Mostly I use Wave lab, but my version, Elements, does not include anything like that. And thank's for posting the link to your handy tool again Steve,, It's hard to find...

Sorry for the daisy chain of posts, but here is a link to a post with the same question. That post has the link buried in it for Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 (c. 2006, IIRC). For some reason, finding that initial post is a PITA. Also, adding Audition to the Utilities menu makes noise reduction quick. I posted a video on that a while back and put the registry edit in the comments (sorry for more links), but scook has a utility he made to make this less painful. I should pull all of this information into a consolidated post at some point but seem to run out of time when it comes to mind.

I would LOVE to see someone make a plugin of the old Symetrix 511A downward expander - one of THE best noisegates I ever used in hardware form. It was basically a Hi Frequency EQ with intelligent variable gain that would ride on top of the hiss... hard to describe but genius to use.

I'm pretty sure most multiband compressors/expanders can do this (e.g. Pro-MB by FabFilter) or a dynamic EQ like Melda's MDynamicEQ.

You need an expander. Compressors are the opposite. You want to reduce volume when the sound level is soft.. not loud. Preferably, within narrow ranges on the spectrum. Zero attack... fast. Quick release.
This is why the Melda tool I demo in the video works well for this job.
I'm pretty sure cakewalk does come with an expander. I just can't remember. Sonitus? Craig, help me out here?
