My favorite free softsynths and FX

I just updated my list and thought I'd share it here.

[Edit: fixed a few broken links, and added a few more instruments and FX.  I tried to fix the links a while back, but the forum spam bot ate my edit.  Hope it works this time!]

TAL Free Products - the TAL website has a lot of freebies to play around with ... a few of the virtual synth emulations like  TAL-NoiseMaker and TAL-BassLine are interesting, as well as FX like TAL Reverb-II or TAL-Chorus-LX, but never made my go-to list.  Some of them do get mentioned on various best free VST lists.

VST Effects - as far as free VST effects go, I'm pretty happy with the bundled FX in Sonar.  My use of VST FX is mostly as channel FX for virtual instruments, so I lack the expertise to recommend audio mixing plugins.  That said, I have found these VSTs useful.

P.S. Next time that happens, shoot me a PM and I'll pull it out of the trash for you. Whenever we do that, Aksimet is supposed to learn from it.

I'd also add the Acon Chorus from the 2014 KVR Developer's challenge.

There's also a free VST version of Wampler's Cranked AC pedal out there.  Coded by LePou, 32 bit only, but still sounds pretty good.

Speaking of KVR Challenge entries...I haven't decided yet if it'll make my favorites list, but I've used the Roth-AIR saturator a couple times now and am pleased with the results. I just wish it had some numbers on the dials. As it is, it's kind of a blind tweak-and-listen process. But your patience will be rewarded.

Hey bit!  Thanks again for those tips!  I really love that PanCake.  Makes a nice channel effect for a synth lead or pad.  The variations in the presets really show what it can do.  Some can be very subtle, but add movement to the sound.

It pairs very nicely with SynthMaster!

Edit: and add Roth-AIR as well!!!  Nice find!  But it's like hot sauce, a little goes a long way!

Thanks Bit.
I was unaware of this plugin. Going to try it tonight.
This plug seems to be an alternative for the "Aural Exciter" or "Sonic maximizer" type of plugs
that are used for getting more high frequencies out of your track.

While not free but so often the ones that comes with DAWs are often neglected while assuming 3rd party ones are better.

I really tried hard to limit myself to just the Cakewalk synths, and some free stuff, in order to learn to use what I've got already.

Some of the 3rd party stuff is redundant.  How many virtual analog synths do you really need?

Do you plan to create your own sounds, or surf presets all day? <rhetorical question>

I was doing great, until the deals on AIR, SynthMaster, and SONiVOX came along ...

Out of 10,000 new patches, I think I may have found 9,000 that I like!

Most of those are lame compared to the effects.  Then again Cakewalk has tutorials you can buy that demonstrates most of them.  The one they shouldn't have dumped was Beatscape.

Then you are clearly just a preset surfer.  There is a lot of synth horsepower in z3ta+ or Rapture if you take the time to learn to program a synth.  With all due respect...  Really?  Lame???

Most of those are lame compared to the effects.  Then again Cakewalk has tutorials you can buy that demonstrates most of them.  The one they shouldn't have dumped was Beatscape.

Then you are clearly just a preset surfer.  There is a lot of synth horsepower in z3ta+ or Rapture if you take the time to learn to program a synth.  With all due respect...  Really?  Lame???

Wow what an IGNORANT observation.  Look at all of the other synths. You brought up two.  With all due respect...once again ignorance. (hint:Then you are clearly a just a preset surfer.)

I'm not going to debate this if you just don't understand synths.  You have a lot to learn, grasshopper.

Your sarcasm is well thought out and appreciated.

Don't do this here, guys. KVR or Gearslutz are better places for such banter.
On topic, those Klanghelm freebies are mighty fine indeed.

I agree!  But maybe I'm a Cakewalk fanboy or something, but calling Cakewalk synths lame?  Them's fighting words!

A response was necessary... OK, I'm done.

FYI, in my personal opinion, RGC Audio, and Rene G. Ceballos, are an industry standard.
