iLok on Windows 7

Yes, I am still on Windows 7 ... I still see some difficulty in the forum with Windows 10 not behaving for some. I am just at a point where things are all running nice and smooth in 64-bit land ... gone are even a trace of the 32-bit dinosaurs of the past. Once you get it like this, the tendency is to finally just use the tools. Life is wonderful ... you don't want to throw any wrenches into the ... ahhh ... place where you'd never want a wrench ...
 
Being a a child of the 60s and 70s I gotta have this Softube Fix Flanger and Doubler. Gotta. Sure, you could more or less achieve these things with the tools we already have in sonar ... maybe even save those tools to a preset so you can call it quickly anytime you want, say a tape flange sound. But this plugin is stirring some seriously wistful feelings in my heart ... a VSO dial that allows you to manually vary tape flange in real time? Gotta have it ... flanging drums and vocals ... 
 
But then there's iLok ... they are the gate keepers between me and my destiny. iLok doesn't want to play with windows 7 ... heck, they don't even support it anymore. I already have the trial version of the softube plugins installed and can see them in sonar. You just can't load them because an ilok message prevents that. Very frustrating to be able to see the awesomeness but not be able to even get one nibble.
 
Anybody know how to make iLok play nice with Windows 7? I gather the auto update feature for windows 7 is not functioning anymore so gone are the days when this security update would be a one click and done thing. No, now you gotta manually install all the correct security updates to bring your system up to the most current windows 7 spec.
 
What ilok is saying on their site is I need to have not only servicePack 1 installed (I do). But there are other specific bundles that need to be installed to get ilok to look the other way on your lowly windows 7 machine. Well, in downloading these, I really dont even know what to do with them. Has anybody successfully done this?
 
Here's what the iLok help page states:
 
Beginning with Version 3.1.3 of License Support, which includes the iLok License Manager application and the drivers and services required to authorize iLok-protected software, Windows 7 must have specific updates already installed prior to running the License Support installer. If the correct update is not installed, the following error message is seen:
 
 
Your Windows system needs updates to run this software.
Please use Windows Update to install all Important Updates, then run this installer again.
 
 
Please use the following steps to check for the specific Windows 7 update that is required:

1. Click on the Start button and go to Control Panel.
2. Go to Programs and Features to the Uninstall section (Note: you will not be uninstalling anything).
3. In the left column, click on the option that says View Installed Updates.
4. Look through the Microsoft Windows updates for either update KB3125574 or update KB3033929

If you do not have KB3125574 or KB3033929 then you will need to download the KB3125574 update from Microsoft's website https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3125574 and install it.
 
But when I search for these updates in Windows Update ... they are obviously named something else in there because the search turns up nothing installed for any of these.

I still have a machine with Windows 7 and never had any problems with iLok. I've also haven't had any issues with Windows 10. Maybe it's time to upgrade (if your computer supports it)?

I just finally installed the iLok License manager - I have had the iLok for a few years with no problems, pre-manager program - and had the same problems as you. I had not been doing the automatic W7 updates,so I went through all of those.... Still I got the same message. Finally, when I wnt to the link you have above and did the manual install of KB3125574  from your link above everything worked. There was still a problem running the software and connected to the site, but I ran the other software in the "troubleshooting" folder in the downloaded License Manager and all is well.

Can't talk about Win 7, but I had some issues with iLok in Windows 10 a while back - the Windows Pace service would not always start up and had to be manually started, or one could restart to see if it started up - but it was hit-or-miss. I tried both Automatic and Delayed-Start, neither were reliable.
 
That hasn't happened lately, so either the newer versions fixed this, or newer Windows updates changed things. I have it set to Automatic startup and have not seen it fail to start.
 
In short, I'm running the latest Windows 10 stuff (version 1607 build 14393.693) and it seems fine.
 
I would be nervous running Windows 7 in an Internet environment these days, if it's off the net, so be it, but it is rather aged and there are a lot of kernel performance improvements in Win 10.
 
Besides, pretty soon, it may be harder to get software that will run on Windows 7 just as older software is beginning to show the strain of running on Windows 10 (like, Kore 2, for example). To me it seems that the thread processing is changing with every new Windows 10 update, so early multi-process environments may be at risk. 
 
In my recent experience, Kore 2 no longer reliably communicated with NIHardware Service unless it is run in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
 
I guess it may be wise to keep an older machine running Windows 7 and keep it off the Internet, but to start looking into buying a newer machine for Windows 10.
 
For myself, I'm waiting for more universal adoption of USB 3.1 before I get a newer machine. Mine is 5 years old and due to retire soon.

I run windows with an administrative account (I am the only user) , install all Windows updates and use the latest version of the iLok License Manager (which as of 15 Jan 2017 is 3.13 1659)

The problem is, the windows installer itself is geeked. The install status bar just keeps scrolling ... two, three hours later ... you think it's installing. It's not ... just providing a mesmerizing light show. This is a known issue with the current Windows Updater. It might even be intentional on the part of Microsoft to push people towards Win 10.
 
I also have no idea how to install these files one by one since they are not .exe files.

I ultimately just gave up on this by the way. So iLok prevented me from laying down money at both SofTube and MusicToyz ... interesting turn of events.
 
What is really frustrating about all of this is I was deep into song recording and creativity mode when all of this happened. I made the tactical error of wondering aloud what my background vocal part might sound like with authentic tape flanging. But when I got caught up in this licensing snafu, my creativity and the muse up and left me for another. Since then not only have I left this song unfinished, I haven't even touched my DAW ... That, my friends, is the dark side to recording music on a computer.
 
Good News: Craig Anderton had already done an awesome demo on simulating the manual tape flanging sound from old recording studios in his excellent Sonar X1 Advanced Workshop Videos which I had already purchased. It's a lot cheaper too as it utilizes plugins already bundled within Sonar like the Sonitus Modulator. It also does not require iLok!
