Im having a problem with audio recording and its really irritating
When I arm my track for an audio recording session, it is instantaneously in the red zone of the volume meter without me playing anything. I decided to record it just to see what the sound actually was and it was this horrible, loud, distorted, screeching noise. I've checked all my volumes in my soundboard, check my lines to my guitar and the adapter, checked my amp settings and all connections but it's still doing this. Can anyone give me a hand? I'd really appreciate it.

ORIGINAL: meandaddy Can you advise what equipment you're using, computer, sequencer, etc? Well I'm fairly ignorant to audio recording but from what I know I am running my ibanez guitar through a marshall amp. The sound is being picked up by a nexxtech microphone and run directly into the back of my computer. I don't think it is my gear though since the problem occurs whether the gear is set up or not. Im thinking it must be the result of a certain setting in the program itself.

What are the details of your microphone? In general, microphones must be run into a preamp or mixer before they go to your computer. We also need your soundcard and computer specs.

Mr. McBlues, Try running the Wave Profiler again on your soundcard. Let me know what happens.

Hi, your input signal is TOO STRONG. STOP. Don't do ANYTHING else. Look at your signal coming IN. YOU WILL FRY YOUR SOUND BOARD. One possible problem, don't use the HEADPHONE jack to run into from your amp into your computer. If your amp doesn't have a LINE OUT, then you will have to use a MIC to get your signal. I play guitar. If you have some volume controls on your soundboard control screen (eg: Soundblaster), then you have to turn the sensitivity DOWN. You also can't use a pre-amp between your guitar and the computer, or any sort of petal. You can use a petal between the guitar and the amp, then use LINE OUT. In other words, you can't amplify the signal AT ALL before putting it into the computer. It has to go from LINE OUT into the computer. Even the HEADPHONE line is slightly amplified and will fry your sound card. Good luck, cheers.
