Building my new DAW: i7-7700 vs Ryzen 5 1600
Hi guys, I'm new here. I write from Italy, so English is not my main language; sorry for any mistake. Here we are: I'm planning to build my new DAW, but I'm not sure about the system I need; I'm using Sonar for years, and I'd like to use it in my new PC, too. I don't know if in this case it is better to choose an Intel i7-7700 non K or an AMD Ryzen 5 1600; from the reviews, I see that an i7 has better IPC than R5, but this one performes better in multi-threaded applications. So, basically my doubt is if Sonar works better with a CPU with "stronger" IPC (such as Intel's i7) or if more cores are better for Sonar. I already have 16 GB of Corsair LPX 2400 MHz memory, I got that kit for 70 euros and I'd like to re-use it. Thank you in advance for any reply.

Jim Roseberry Hi Matteo, Ran audio stress-tests with the Ryzen 1800x with two different X370 motherboards.
In short, the 7700k is a much better choice for working with audio (especially at low-latency). Ryzen is great at multi-threaded applications (video rendering)... but not for low-latency multi-threaded applications (mixing audio at low-latency settings).
Thank you for your reply, Jim. So I'm gonna choose Intel this time, can't wait to build my new system

What kind specific of performance improvements / differences can one expect to see in general, when actually USING the application, I mean (not so much self-assessments, but on the GUI user-end)? I ask only because I just finished my new DAW with an FX-8300 - that's a 8-core processor, but it seems audio-editing apps are more fond of greater clock speed than harnessing more cores. But what do I know?

You don't want to sacrifice significant clock-speed for more cores. In a perfect scenario, you want high clock-speed with more cores.

But second best is certainly fewer cores and greater clock speed, presumably? Makes sense!

Yep, see my posts earlier. Ryzen is great at multi-threaded applications (video rendering). What it's not great at is multi-threaded applications at low latency settings. Try those same tests again at a 32/48/64-sample ASIO buffer size. Using DAW Bench, the 6850k (also $500) slams the 1800x. The 7700k also handily bests the 1800x (The 7700k is $300). We all had high hopes for Ryzen. It's nowhere close to living up to the hype (for low latency audio).

I agree, I have an i7 7700 and a Ryzen 1700 both with best motherboards and Fastest supported RAM. Yet when it comes to VSTi i7 is still King! best option is 6 core i7 6850 so I was told. Ryzen is no slouch, I have it over clocked and the RAM running at 3200Mhz but for some reason when it comes to running lots of VSTis, at low latency, i7 does a much better job at scaling under load.
