I learned to keep playing when I got lost years ago because most people wouldn't notice anyway.
 
The problem is when some of the other musicians were foolish enough to be following me (of all people). 

This is exactly the problem with mis-takes.  I had a bass player in a big band I played in who was exceedingly good.  He used to try to throw me and the drummer off for sh**s and giggles.  Isn't that schadenfreude, Pedro?

I often give students two bits of advice about playing live:
 
1) Don't give anything away
2) Don't give anything away
 
1) refers to not practicing that hard bit from the next song before you play it, so that the audience knows what you are about to play, even before it is announced,
and
2) refers to not letting on that you, or another member of the band, have messed up.  99.9% of the time, nobody will notice..
