@Beepster (now how's THAT for talking to oneself!!!)...

RE: one of the Sloan doods (pretty sure it was the singer guy)

After doing a bit of YT binge gorging on old Sloan stuff that statement was not nearly specific enough (because apparently there is some vocal duty switcherooni action going on).

I meant the bass player dood. He was the one spazzin' out at the C&D.

Since I'm apparently talking to/spinning for myself today might as well post my specific favorite performance of this specific song...

Hangover - Max Webster

OMG, I haven't thought of Max Webster in YEARS. I saw them a couple of times when they toured with Rush, and then they just faded from my mind. What a wake-up! While looking up their discography to see what was released after, I found the following (available from Amazon on 6 October for $83.02 (CDs; the vinyl set is $237.99 ); Day 1 for me):

http://ventsmagazine.com/...ter-vinyl-cd-box-sets/

Ya, MW was essentially the "other" Canucker prog band and they certainly kicked some [REDACTED].

The band split at some point and it turned into the Kim Mitchell show (with the MW keyboardist IIRC). He had some decent tunes over the years (Go For a Soda probably being the best and it's a reeeeally early solo offering) but it was definitely a shadow of MW.

Again another example of being gobbled up by the Canucker music biz.

It's like the industry up here has the Midas touch but instead of turning things into gold it turns coolness into cheese.

Kind of novelty songs to me. Good playing, good voice, witty writing but somehow (for me) it misses the mark.

But, as myolpal says, "that's what makes a horse race".

Bapu, i think that "witty writing" was just part of what made it Canadian.  We can't take ourselves seriously, or the audience throws Timbits and moose-droppings at us.

Then there's these guys...

Sloan - Good In Everyone (song starts at around 2:11)

Way ahead of their time as far as the full on Indie/Hipster movement IMO (as evidenced by that intro... lol). Of course it's kind of bubble gummy sounding but I always kind of liked them even in the throes of my teenage metal angst.

Anyhoo (and, Sluggo... this happened at the C&D) one of the Sloan doods (pretty sure it was the singer guy) joined forces with my local pub's kind of house band spazzos (who were/are also really friggen' good/talented/theatrical fellos) and put on a Halloween gig. He was mostly on drums and friggen' KILLED it! The whole band just blazed out on all sorts of weird nostalgia rock with kiss makeup (and a couple covers), gorrilla masks, lights/smoke (in a tiny little pub with a TINY little "stage" if you could even call it that).

Great time and of course everyone wanted me to meet the guy which I think might have been kind of awkward for both of us but he was pretty cool and you could tell he just LOVED playing music.

I never got into Sloan, for some reason.  I know a couple of them were big fans of a band i used to play in.  They'd come to all our local shows, stand in the back (like every other MF on Queen St!), and listen.  I met them, but could never remember what their names were or which instrument they played.
I can't believe i was THAT dismissive...

My fav Canadian bands are Crash Test Dummies and The Guess Who.

I listened to the first CTD CD like 103,789 times. I listened to their second CD almost as much.

Burton Cummings is like the Canadian Freddie Mercury to me. He can do no wrong no matter how schmaltzy the song (and a few Guess Who songs were a bit schmaltzy and so were a few Queen songs).

I liked Tom Cochrane. Is he still extant? Rush too, obviously. Oh, and Great Big Sea, I think they've retired though.

I heard that 'The Coch" is planning another tour.  A friend of a friend is in his band at the moment.

Oh I don't need lady parts to manically caterwaul like that. A few too many pints and maybe some ill advised shots of whiskey is all that's required.
