Darla 20 & new DAW problem

Hi
I renewed my DAW HW and now I'm having problems with Darla 20. I have tried everything possible (moved the card to other PCI slots, removed/reinstalled newest Echo drivers etc.).

The problem is that I can't run any audio applications (Media Player, Sonar, Sound Recorder) - they freeze immediately when they should generate some sound. Actually the whole Windows freezes - so I have to reboot the PC. OS is Windows XP SP 1.

I think it's somehow related to the new motherboard ASUS A8V Deluxe. I have disabled nearly all of it's features, and also removed all extra PCI cards - but no luck so far.

The weird thing is, that when I start dxdiag.exe and press "Test DirectSound", it works! And so does "Test DirectMusic".

Any ideas?

Thanks, MoreK

Can the Darla 20 do the sample rate of the file you are trying to play ? Find out what sample rates the card can do to start. Also, make sure you have the latest driver for the Darla that is for the version of Windows you have.

You can get the drivers here....

Yep, I have the latest drivers. It can't be sample rates either....

I didn't reinstall Windows XP and I'm using the same audio settings and same Darla 20 card as before. Only the motherboard and CPU (& memory) changed.

Hmmmm.... Would be nice if any Darla20, Gina20 or Layla20 user could confirm if the card works with 6.11 driver and ASUS A8V motherboard + AMD Athlon 64.

Ok, the last call for tips before dumping the card and bying M-Audio.

I noticed that I can play nearly all other sample rate BUT 44,100 Hz. And I'm sure that the card supports it. I even reinstalled Windows XP from scratch, but no luck.

    Anyone?

DOH! Just read your latest post. Ignore...

I didn't reinstall Windows XP... motherboard and CPU (& memory) changed.

This is the most likely cause. While XP is much better than older MS OS's at adjusting to new hardware without a re-install, it still is not 100% perfect. You're going to have to re-install XP to completely isolate the problem - in fact, there probably will not be a problem once the re-install is done.

If you didn't back up your system, your best bet is to buy a new hard drive, install on the new drive and add the old drive back in as D:

As recent as mid-last year, Echo couldn't even verify that their 24-bit line of cards were compatible with AMD64 chipsets. Frankly, I'm surprised the 20-bit cards work at all (with the newer chipsets), and suspect it's a hit and miss affair.

Hate to say it, but yeah, you're probably better off upgrading your soundcard.

    Good luck,
    JD

Yep, that's what I did. Should get the new M-Audio Audiophile 2496 any day now. Not a bad price either. Well, I needed a good excuse to replace 20-bit Darla with something more up-to-date :)

Though it always makes me feel like moron when I have to give up fully functional gear..

    Anyway, thanks for you help....
