Guitar /m-audio 2396/S4 how?

Hi all
I have been using the above for a few weeks now (although the M-audio 2496 is new, had a SB Audigy before) and i have been plugging the guitar into the line in on the sound card.
It seems to work ok but was wondering if i should be boosting the level before it gets to the PC.
If so would a DI box be a good idea, using the line output.
In the M-audio 2496 controll pannel the levels seem to be in the red anyway so i would have thought it was loud enough already.
Im confused so any help would be great
Thanks alot

Dave.

    Hi dave

yes.... as you think... its not recomendable to hook up a guitar or some
to a line leve input... as the MAudio Audiophile 2496...
    need some PRE AMP first...

    I sugest this...

only 35 bucks.... THE SMALLER FROM BEHRINGER

if you see it too smaller...
tell me and i can sugest some bigger rigs...
    like this...

    Thanks for the reply.
i have a spirit note pad mixer that would also do the job but do you know off anything smaller, maybe a di box would help. i have an old one with line out so might try that.

You need some type of DI or better yet an effects box with a real line level output. Some pedal boards have one as do modeling rigs like the Line6 POD, Johnson J-Station, Behringer V-Amp, etc. Even some amps have a nice line output for recording. A direct box would be the cheapest, I think ART and Samson even have cheap active ones now.

I use a Johnson J-Station if I don't mic the amp and I love it. Don't think you can buy them anymore new but if you find one on e-bay get it while you can.

thanks but to be honest thats more than i want to spend. its only for home use and it would be just to get the signal to a decent level. im not bothered about eq as i can do that in Sonar but it would be nice if i had some control over the output level into the pc.
Ive just ralised my di box has only line or mic input but just found an Aphex bass pedal that has line out so will try that tomorrow.
