In Samplitude you have the choice to "Scan VST folders for new plug-ins" only. This is very fast and convenient when you only added a new one. But if you have Waves plugins there is always the shell that has to be scanned and that is time consuming. I see the difference with or without Waves shell quite well, because I have the Waves plugins only on one of my PCs.

In Sonar/CbB there is also a setting (Rescan existing plugins = off) to scan only for new ones, but I have the feeling it is not always considered and it is also not so efficient like in Samplitude. And if you start scan directly in the Plugin Manager, then it is never being considered (that's why I got used to scan in Preferences only).

Another reason why I dislike the Waves shell is that you do not have the possibility to organize plugins in your way. This is crucial for Samplitude, because it has no real plugin manager. So I have created an own VST2 plugin folder for Samplitude with logical subfolders like "Reverb" and in there I have only links to the real plugin DLLs (mklink), runs great except for Waves plugins! I even reorganized the VST3 folder like that, but just kept the top in the standard location and used the real DLL files.

I doubt it. I have to get WUP if I buy outright.

WUP is capped at $225 for all of the plugins that you own, as long as you use them on a single machine at a time. I just wait until all of my plugins have no WUP left and there is a reason to upgrade. At the moment, there is no reason as v10 is simply a new version number. There is very little that has actually changed and any bug fixes seem to be aimed at newer plugins which, if you bought them, are probably still on the WUP. Six months or a year down the road I think I'll be looking to do a WUP for everything at once.

Your right Dan, this looks nothing more than a version number change. Not really any reason to update now.

But I can't help but think that they are up to something. I mean, why else would they do this? For the sake of a version change? Doesn't make sense.

That's why I am wondering what's around the corner. Gotta be something.

Waves plug ins are some of the best IMO. If I had Waves Gold I don't think 225.00 would be a bad price to pay if it assured me for updates long into the future. Yearly though it isn't so exciting. For the smaller players like me with a handful of their plug ins I am tempted to substitute other similar plug ins that have lifetime updates or simply use the ones I have until they become obsolete.
It is a shame because I like their products. I wouldn't want to do that, but I'm not going to keep tossing money at plug ins I seldom use.

You don't have to WUP annually. Waves would like you to. You only need to when there is a major version change. I've done WUP twice in 15 years: Once when v7 went to v8 and years later when v8 went to v9. Once you are on the current version, updates to that version are free.

I agree with you Tim. And I love AR Plates so much!! I really don't want to do without.

If it goes like Dan is suggesting I'll accept it works that way. But I'm not really sure I am ok with paying for the same plugins again in 2-3 yrs. Because that's the way I look at it. My rent will be due in 2-3 yrs.

I am going to have to think about this one.

Make no mistake and let me be clear, I think Waves is some of the best out there. Not sure I am liking this WUP thing. Didn't have to deal with it till now.

And if time goes on and it becomes clear that I will be able to keep using my V9 plugs till the cows come home, then everything is fine!! I'm a happy camper! : )

You don't have to WUP at all. I only have a current WUP because I upgraded to Platinum from Gold. Each major version change adds a couple of plugins to some of the bundles. I have never WUPPed single plugs.

You can keep using v9 for a long, long time. Eventually though, something will force your hand, like iLok authorizations not supporting v9, or you buy a plugin that requires v10. Keep in mind, when Waves went from v8 to v9, that was also the big push to VST3 and 64bit plugins. You are likely good on v9 for at least another year, maybe two.

Rocky, I just went from Gold to Platinum about two three months ago so some of my plugins are still WUP'd. And as I understand it, that's all I need to update all my plugins to V10.

And DAn you are correct in that at some point something will break V9. I was just hoping it wasn't Waves doing it as a way to make me pay to use. : (

Re: Waves subscription plans announced 2018/06/14 00:29:43 (permalink)
I have bought 25 Waves plugins over a longish period of time.  2 of them have now run out of free updates.  (the other 23 are still getting free updates)  Firstly on the subject of updating or buying plans.  Waves told me that you don't have to do anything at all in fact.  All your existing plugins will continue to work forever.  But those two for example I will need to pay for in order to update. (the others will eventually run out one by one)  You can buy individual updates as well.  If you are actually happy with how they sound, you don't have to update them at all. There is going to be no big change here.

In terms of V10. I can upgrade everything to V10. Except (right now) those same two plugs will be on V10 but they will not be able to be updated from this point on, same as before. Unless I buy individual updates or a plan to cover them.

You don't even have to have to upgrade to V10 either. You can just leave everything the way it is, let all of them come out of free updates over time, but still use them and they will sound and work fine.

Grem is wrong here. Upgrading mine to V10 now will still allow free V10 updates (for the remaining 23) The two that were not free under V9 will still need to paid for under V10. Others will come out of free updates one by one.

Grand Rhapsody was the very first one I bought. So it is one updates that needs to be paid for.  But seriously it sounds pretty damn good right now so you have to ask yourself what is any update going to do for it.

If an update though does add some serious improvements and features then just buy the single update for it. Wait and see what the updates actually do.

Update

Just updated everything from V9 to V10. All went fine except now the two plugins that were out of date are gone now. The reason they are gone is because during the V10 install I was asked to have all V9 components removed, I said YES and in so doing those two plugins are now not there.  I will obviously need to buy the single V10 updates for those plugins.

Further Update

So as I thought just had to buy the two V10 licences that were still on V9 and hence not visible in my case. They are around $10 each I think, so it was no big deal. So yes they are back. One of them for me was Grand Rhapsody. NOTE. The samples were never touched or removed etc. Once updated to V10 all was back to normal with that piano. Samples do not have to be downloaded again.

Moral of the Story

If you have got a bunch of V9 plugins right now that are still getting free updates and you want to go to V10. Do so. No worries there. If some of your current plugins are V9 plugins that are not free updates anymore, then there are three things you can do:

1) Pay for the V10 licenses for each of them. Not a bad way if its only one or two or so.

2) Pay for a full update plan which is capped and that will cover all of them for a year. (not sure when that starts, I imagine from the moment you do it, so if you have just bought quite a few recently, then they may remain free for a while yet! The capped plan works well once you go over 20 say that need updating. Do the math)

3) When you do your V10 conversion for your current free update V9 plugins when you get asked if you want to delete all the V9 stuff simply say NO. You will end up with a bunch of V10 plugins and their updates that were free before and will still continue to work and be free now. And your V9 plugins should still be there except they wont be updatable now until you move them up into V10.

It is complex! I was almost afraid of booting up Waves Central. Its OK though and the step up to V10 is painless. By the way if you do convert to V10 it is easy to see in your account which (no longer free) ones are still on V9.

And there is More!
It cost me $25 (US) to update the two plugs. So Waves have just given me a free voucher to the same value.  It means I could jump another $29 special I guess for only $4! Nice of them. Except after a while it too will have to be covered somehow for updates.

The Waves voucher it was good for up to 50% toward a bundle or 25% toward a single plugin. I would prefer your way.

Thanks for clearing tjat up Jeff.

As for when the WUP will start, if am not mistaken it will start when the last WUP expires.

IOW, I just bought a plugin last week. I got WUP on it till next year. If I WUP all my plugins today, that WUP plan would not start till next year when that otherplugin I bought last week runs out.

Bapu learned this from keeping his Mercury bundle updated.

I'll reiterate what Grem said. Thanks for the update on the updates.
The bottom line IMHO is Waves needs an income stream and they need to keep their products up to date to stay with new developments. They also need to fix bugs if they exist.
They are tackling both issues with V10.

Since I don't foresee any issues with a 64 bit Waves Plugin in the near future I doubt I'll do anything immediately.
Before this announcement I  updated my Waves plugins to the most recent versions.
I  contemplated buying Gold. The only reason I didn't is probably 75% of that package would have been redundant to other plugins I already own. In this case I think those who own Gold/Platinum might benefit the most from WUP.

Looking around Waves website, and it wasn't easy to find, but they have WC/installers for Legacy Versions all the way back to V6. That eases my mind a lot.

I think, without some sort of development roadmap or list of actual fixes, they're asking you to pay for a mystery box.

Thinking the same here.

Like I said, I'm just gonna think on this one some more.

Just glad realize that they will allow V9 to install for years to come, if need be.

Re: Waves subscription plans announced 2018/06/14 22:34:53 (permalink)
Just be careful upgrading from V9 to V10. If you do this you will be asked if you want to delete any V9 stuff behind. If you select YES here, all the V9 stuff will go including any plugins that are still running under V9. i.e. the ones that are still working fine but are out of date update wise. So only current (still free updates) V9 plugins will switch over to V10.

There is no way back from here unless you reinstall V9 of course. Just say NO to removing any V9 stuff and I am assuming the V9 plugins that were there before (but out of free updates) should remain behind and be still useable.

I agree they should tell its what the fixes and improvements actually are so we can determine whether it is worth upgrading any V9 plugin to V10 and get the latest version. Updates can be so minor you would not bother, to major fixes e.g. crash causing situations and some serious features being added in.

Studio One by the way still boots up fast even with everything on V10. So in my case it has not been effected. I think Waves plug-ins sound excellent and all this is worth the trouble.
