Tweaking bios and Windows XP for music

Hello all,

At one time I recall seeing an article, or something like that, concerning how to tweak the bios and OS of a DAW to be optimized for music. Does anyone know where I can find that information? I just bought a new system and want to make it run lean and mean!

Thanks in advance,

Butch

    Like Conley said www.musicxp.net

Regarding Bios there´s a tendency among motherboard-makers to make a safer than safe setting & call it optimized.
I suggest you get your manual for the MB out & tweak bios yourself, especially memory-speeds seems to suffer from this syndrome. When I used the "optimized setting", my 400MHz dual-channel memory ran on 333MHz, causing severe crackles in Sonar.
However you should consult the manufacturers info-pages for your particular memory.

http://www.tomshardware.com/ has a bunch of tutorials on most computer-related stuff.
    Good luck!

I'd recommend caution and restraint with some of those tweaks. XP needs a lot less fussing around than W98, W3.1 etc. Those OS's plus slower HW and high RAM costs were always groaning under the weight of audio programs and so tweaking was fairly essential.

But with a reasonably modern computer and XP, the defaults work surprisingly well in most cases. But old habits die hard: when I first started using XP I spent a few hours tweaking and then probably ten times that fixing things I inadvertently broke. Ultmately, I wound up putting it all back, re-installing the OS and using the computer for music rather than using my time to 'build' the system.

    Butch -

Before you go tweaking stuff, first of all see how your system performs out of the box. You might find that it performs perfectly fine as-is.

    If/when you do apply tweaks:

    1) start with the safest and most popular tweaks
    2) take notes so you can undo (or repeat) them easily
