are device chains working for you?
Okay, So I insert a new synth track and choose a patch. If I then right-click on the track I save it as a device chain. I save the chain in the default folder (c:\program files\ etc.. \device chains\). If I then insert another track and then try to load my device chain, it doesn't show up. The size of my device chain is around 6kb in file size. The stock device chains that come with P5 are around 24kb. Has anyone tried to save tracks as device chains, and were you successful with it? thanks s

Yes, I have some device chains saved and they work perfectly. Not sure what the file size of the saved chains are, but I would think that would depends on how many devices are in the chain...

Files sizes of chains I have made are from 5 to 305 kb P5's that I checked are 5 to 50 averaging about 13 Dumb question. How are you loading them?. Chains are not tracks they are devices inserted into tracks.

Or, click the add new instrument track button. It will give you the option to add a new device chain or new instrument. Your saved device chains should be available there. I usually save them under the instrument used to make them so I don't get confused.

Semantics and nomenclature, sometimes they hide what we are really looking at and for. He/she may be thinking that if you save a device chain it also the saves the pattern in the track so you can reload the whole thing, pattern and devices at a later time.

Yes, this is what I've now found. If I right click in the track pane I can choose the device chain. If I try to use the device browser (? I'm not sure that is what it is officially called), my device chains don't show up. Thanks for the help everyone. s.

If you mean the browser at the bottom of the P5 window, then that is the pattern browser where you find (and preview) midi patterns and wave files...your device chains won't show up there.

If I try to use the device browser ... my device chains don't show up. You're clicking on the Presets ... text under Device Chain in the Track Inspector, right Mr.Sluggo? Then you get that striped flyout, but no custom chains; even under All? Mine don't show up, either. "All" seems to indicate "all" of just what Cakewalk gave you. The nerve ... Here's what you do: Create a new sub-folder in the path C:\Cakewalk\Project5 Version 2\Device Chains. (The path may vary slightly; I don't put anything in C:\Program Files, if I have a choice.) I did this myself with the old Track Patches from 1.5. You can create sub-folders under that, too, so the result might look like C:\Cakewalk\Project5 Version 2\Device Chains\Custom Device Chains\S&M. Then the tree will branch out correctly, and "All" will include anything under the Custom Device Chain folder that's not in it's own sub-folder. Myself, I find the right-click Replace method quicker. I hope this helps. File management is not my strong point here. Edit: You know what it is, Slug? You need to highlight "All" in the first category (far left), and "All" in the second category (the middle slot). Then you'll get *all* of your custom device chains to show up at the far right (third column). I'd still create your own sub-folder for easier navigation. If it gets anything like my collection, you'll go blind trying to find one. HTH

I'll have to try clicking the "all" twice. But I even moved my presests into existing folders and they still didn't show up, unless i did the right-click thing. s
