New Mixer

I would like rid of my Behringer Eurorack for something a little better, and because 2 of the 4 channels are dead , but its old. Just looking for suggestions, on what type of mixer, or even if I should go with something like the Presonus Firepod (I don't know anything about it). I would really like something that is rack mounted for space concerns. Just for reference I use an audiophile 2496 as my sound card, and plug the Behringer into that.

Thanks
CJ

Look into the new Alesis Multimix Firewire mixers... they're very affordable, and work as an outboard sound source to allow recording multiple tracks (instead of the two the 2496 allows).

    Good luck!

    cjstearns,

Yes, the firepod would indeed replace your sound card via firewire to your PC. Your Room Monitors would connect to the control room main outs on the back. Your headphone amplifier would connect to the Cue mix out for multiple headphone use. in addition there our 8 TRS our o nthe back and 2 line inupts and 2 pre-amp outs. You also have Midi I/O and S/SPDIF I/O as well.

I love using mine. you can record all 8 channels at the same time. Best used with AISO drivers more so than with the WDM driver, however.

    Peace.

    Peace,

    Thanks for your reply's.
I currently use a stereo input and 2 mono inputs, (untill I lost my 2 channels), but this summer I am going to be adding drums as well. Recording drums will be new and experimental for me. I really like the idea of pluging everything into one unit, including MIDI, thats why I have been interested in the firepod, and the rack-mount would save me on valuable space.

    Thanks
    Chris

Mackie is offering free firewire card with the 1620 mixer. IMHO the onyx pre is better than the firepod. So condider that you'll get a free analog mixer if you only going to use the pre's and the firewire.

I'm currently drooling over the new Mackie onyx 4-bus 24-8 which is not yet available (not the 2480 8-bus, which is.) It's beautiful. Has pre fader direct outs on all mono channels. Has 6 aux sends, all pre/post switchable. And the MSRP is only $1600. It doesn't do firewire, but if you have a 2408mkiii or a Fireface or something like that, it would make a beautiful front end.

If I have enough credit card headroom when it's released, I'm definitely buying one. (I'm upgrading to a fireface pretty soon here)

I'll add another vote for the Alesis Multimix, 12 or 16 channel. Get the updated drivers from their site though.

I just picked up a new Mackie 1402-VLZ PRO, my first mixer. I mainly wanted a mixer so I could keep everything connected and make recording into my ESI Waveterminal 192M 4 in/8 out easier. The pre's sound really nice for the price and give me plenty of headroom.
When I do upgrade my pc interface I'll be looking at the Mackie ONYX for sure.

The direct outs at the Mackie insert points are a good place to tap into for recording purposes. For years I had been using the bus outputs of my SR2404, and finally made 12 insert cables about a year ago which bypassed most of the mixer. IMO, the sonic improvement was quite noticable, as always YMMV.
