Yep,

Thanks for the thread. I gave me more of an idea what phasing is. I appreciate it. Also, I might add, the thing you wrote on compressors, the little guy inside the compresser, did the trick on all the stuff I was reading about the numbers. Now I know what each number is supposed to do so now I can at least start to learn how to play with the numbers.

Again thank you

ORIGINAL: jsaras

1. With the exception of drum overheads, try to record instruments in mono as much as possible. Stereo (soft) synths, stereo guitar effect pedals, stereo chorused bass, etc. can sound terrific when they're played alone, but when they all play together in a mix it can sound very amateurish very quickly. Record in mono and let the panning volume and reverb(s) create the stereo field.

Amen!

Stereo softsynths that sound great while tracking can be a nightmare, until narrowed, when mixing. And with the stereo field, pay particular attention to those early reflections.

Great topic, Chaz!

The key is not so much playing with the numbers as it is training your ears to hear what changing the numbers are doing to the track when they are being changed.
