5.2 vst midi effects?
According to the website, new in 5.2 is the ability of SONAR to now receive MIDI data from VST instruments. Does this mean Sonar will work with vst midi effects? I've been wanting to program midi effects for Sonar for a long time, but I've never been able to get very far, and the mfx development forum here is shockingly poor, especially compared to how active this forum always is. I'm now thinking about using SynthMaker, which I understand can make VST midi effects. I know Sonar didn't used to work with VST midi effects but this information about 5.2 is making me hopefull. Has anyone has tried VST midi effects in Sonar 5.2? Or know how well it works? Thanks in advance! Mick

Hi Mick- I know Sonar didn't used to work with VST midi effects but this information about 5.2 is making me hopefull. Has anyone has tried VST midi effects in Sonar 5.2? Or know how well it works? Thanks in advance! I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you want us to try a VST MIDI effect and report back? If so, which one? I've only used MFX so far, but FLS as a VSTi works great in terms of sending its MIDI data to SONAR. What exactly are you looking for? Thanks- -Susan

Thanks Susan. I'm really just asking if anyone has had any experience using a vst midi effect with Sonar, and how well it worked. What you say about FLS sounds encouraging. What would be more encouraging would be if you told me that prior to upgrading to 5.2, FLS did not work great in terms of sending its midi data to sonar, but with 5.2 it does. :) Is that what happened, or did it work also prior to 5.2? Thanks again. Mick ORIGINAL: Susan G Hi Mick- I know Sonar didn't used to work with VST midi effects but this information about 5.2 is making me hopefull. What do these two things have to do with each other? Yes Sonar 5 will receive midi data from VSTi it however has nothing to do with programming effects if I read your post correctly. Also I was reading your thread in the DirectX forum you received excellent advice. A recommendation I would have for you is buy and read some books on MS VC6. I don't have the compiler installed on my system at this time but as I remember setting the lib path is very easy.

Bruce, yeah, I don't think you're reading the post entirely correctly. There are at least a handful of VSTs out there that deal with MIDI rather than audio. Chord Generators, transpose/harmonize things. Of course, they were pretty useless to Sonar before 5.2. And now? Well, a lot of 'em are still pretty useless. After the release of 5.2 I dug some up from various places around the internet and bunged them into Sonar to see if I could get any to work. Most don't, but I think this is mostly because they're independent/home-coded plugins that are most likely very old. As I'll tell anyone who will listen, check out ChordSpace, and it's commercial younger, more powerful brother ChordSpacePlaya, for an example of what can be done with a MIDI VST.

I sure hope Sonar6 will get the midi VST thing right finally. I for one, really want to code my own midi plugins and MFX is a pain to figure out. But also I need to make plugins that will work both in Sonar as well as another host that does not support MFX. VSt midi plugins are the future anyway, not MFX. And as has been pointed out...there are some pretty cool ones already..like ChordSpace.
