Changing tempo post tracking
Hiya! I have a guy I'm working with who simply brings in his looped beats and raps over them. I found that I now want to add some synths and whatnot. The problem is that the guy didn't give me his tempos the day we tracked, so I was unable to lock the project down with the proper BPM. When I attempt to change the BPM now, the vocal tracks get moved around and things don't line up. Is there a way to make sure things stay where they are when I put in the new/different BPM so I can work with midi more easily? Thanks for any help you offer!

Sonar 6 has clip locking to time or measure beat. Right-click on clip or go to clip properties. For versions before this you may need to do some bouncing down to single audio files.

Indeed, good call! I've used this before, I just was hoping I had an option checked off somewhere to make the clips start at the same spot on the time ruler when changing tempos. Will the clips stay put AFTER I unlock the time lock? Let's say I lock the clips in time, change the BPM, and then wants to move my verse around a little bit. After unlock, will the clips jump to their original 'start' time?

I didn't mention this before, but I think you have to change the radio button to something other than M:B:T in the clip properties for it to lock to time and not be affected by tempo changes.

I have tried to do the tempo change with data and tempo locked, but my midi and audio do not line up anymore when I do this. My audio data follows the tempo, doesn't sound different but follows the change. The midi changes.

I may have been answering a different question...So you want the audio to speed up or slow down to fit with midi? If so, then I've been talking about something different. AudioSnap was designed for this stuff, but I don't have a lot of experience with it. If not, you need to lock the start of the audio clips to the correct measure/beat of the song. You can change the tempo however you want during the song, but for the midi to match up with the audio clips you need to adjust the tempo maps to be the same as the audio clips during the parts that they are playing.

I was only doing this all so I could quantize my midi to my audio beat that I was given to start with. I just used audio snap on the midi and it all lines up now. I wish I had a button from the Staples commercial "That was easy" Thanks for the help tho! I have other angles to go from next time I run into this issue.
