I checked out the link Bob. Interesting stuff. However it looks like it doesn't play prerecorded tracks, and in our shows it's a necessity. Thanks for posting it though.

Bummer - as I had said I used it for live stuff - oh well.

JCody, thanks, you're right... don't know why I thought this sound is not of Windows origin... That's some relief.
Again, I totally agree with you that playlist must be repaired, hitting "space" two times before each song is really irritating and I hope Cakewalk will fix it in their next update

You gave me very interesting information to think about this memory overload problem.
But I tend to consider such behaviour a bug. At first, what else on earth playlist could be useful for, but live performances? I think stability and keeping resources usage low must be the main priority in this case, not recording and saving changes. Second, if project gets automatically closed, what's the use of keeping it in the memory anyway?
Automation and synchronization is the main reason why I'm using playlist, otherwise I could as well use Winamp to play audio . If playlist doesn't work correctly with automation present, it's almost useless to my point of view.

P.S. Just spent some time experimenting with playlist in X3d, made of light-weight test projects containing VST automation. No memory overloads, it seems that projects unload from memory as they should even when I change something on the fly and save changes. This gives me some hope. Can someone else confirm this?

That's interesting Jekyll. I'll give it a try. Maybe that's something they fixed in X3. But you said that you were 'saving on the fly'. What happens if you make a change but don't save it? Does it stay on in memory or does it close? If they've fixed that I'd be delighted. But it's still unusable for me until they fix the main issues.

The playlist feature is a significant feature to many professional musicians, and one that sets Sonar apart from many other programs for live performance use. I find it extraordinary that Cakewalk have ignored this problem over 3 updates. I would have thought that the outcry a few years ago when they removed the feature might have been a clue.
In response to the 'workaround' of using X2 for live performance/playlist - you just plain shouldn't have to. Tell me again why I paid for X3! Very poor form indeed:(

Re: Playlist still broken 2014/01/10 15:21:27 (permalink)
I think they fixed a lot of bugs on X3D. Sadly yours was not one of them so I hope it will be fixed in X3E. Cake do have a heck of a lot of bugs to fix right now and the good news is they are fixing bugs even old ones, it seems the company culture had changed since the Gibson takeover.. The bad news is that none of this is going to happen overnight, not by a long long way sadly. They are playing catch up from the bad decisions of the past.

So in all good news, something will be done I'm sure, not sure when though.

I actually just got a few notifications of things being worked on in regards to the playlist for the next update...sooooo hang on just a bit longer guys.

We're sorry that we missed some things in the last few updates, but due to the massive amount of work that was required in VST3/Melodyne we just couldn't get to it in time.

Best Regards,
Seth

Thank you for chiming in Seth. From a "sales" perspective, there is nothing better than having other musicians come up between sets on a live performance and asking "What are you running on that machine??" In a studio it is hard to advertise a DAW; but man, in a live performance setting there are musicians in every crowd!

C'mon Seth, it's just a few lines of code! I bet you guys did the VST3 and ARA integration over the weekend, and spent the next six months in Hawaii.

Seriously, I think y'all have done an extremely good job of identifying, prioritizing, and fixing bugs. By and large, I think the community has been helpful in that goal because they can tell you're truly paying attention. And on a personal note...thanks for fixing the Loop Construction window playback bug!

I thought Sonar was a music "production" tool. Not a music "playing" tool. It's nice to have a lot of "add-ons" like this but I don't expect Sonar to make them all perform at top level.

On the other hand, if it has a feature, it should work as advertised. If it's broke and no one wants to fix it then it should be removed imho.

There was a post where Seth said they're working on it, so apparently they do want to fix it. As to removing it, it still functions, just not optimally for live use. Some people might find it useful in its present state.

I understand the point about production vs. playing, and optimizing a program in a focused way. However I find there are some "real time"-type functions, like Matrix View, which are helpful for songwriting and other kinds of music creation. I don't expect Cakewalk to turn into Ableton Live any more than I expect it to turn into Vegas, but hopefully having some of those elements doesn't detract from Cakewalk's work on other aspects of the program.

I have been a solo performer almost since the first days of Midi. We were lucky that a person, Jeff Koftinoff
http://www.jdkoftinoff.com/
Lived in my hometown, You'll see if you go to his website that he coded out a Midi performance software that really worked flawlessly for us. http://www.jdkoftinoff.com/main/Historic_Projects/The_Pro_MIDI_Player/
In the beginning we had to load about 25 songs at a time due to floppy disk storage limitations. But this simple program never crashed unless the power went out. I had him customize a foot controller based on the second joystick port. Stop/start/up/down and last but not least "panic" ( all notes off) I used it night after night for at least 8 years, I switched to mini disk when I got tired of lugging around 20 lbs of hardware.
In 2004 I bought a laptop and started using Win Amp and an X keys footswitch. This has been the closest I have been to Jeffs program.
I have dreamed of software that would work the way this did but include real audio and Midi as well. Seems nobody has found a reason to spend time on this and we just get half baked things like Sonar's playlist.
My wish list for live performance , just in case the bakers read this thread.

Play stereo audio files, wave or mp3  ( win amp does this)
Run Midi in sync for efxs and lighting
Lyrics pop up on top of screen once songs starts ( Jeffs program did this in 1986)
Foot control via hot keys. ( win amp does this)
Drag and drop playlist editor  ( win amp )
Save playlist  ( win amp)
Manual playlist advance , stops after each song (Win amp is only player that does this).

I'm pretty sure I  can make sonar's playlist do all of the above with the exception of foot control and drag and drop. When its current glitches are fixed, your dream may just come true.
