Fly Away

Latest that started out with an afternoon screwing around with Rob Papen's Blue II. Nothing too complicated here, but I had a lot of fun putting it together.

All sounds good Dan. Love that bass sound, clear and wide mix with a breezy tone. This piece most certainly flies.

Well,  Dan, you've got me totally stoked for our upcoming flight to San Francisco.
The rush of take-off, that pass through the first layer of clouds. It's all here.
I'm not too keen on the airport gig these days (it used to be fun), but the actual flying part still fascinates me.
I love viewing the world from 30,000 feet, and passing through the shadow of a sunset from a plane was one of the most breathtaking things I have ever seen.
This may not be terribly complex, but it captures the spirit of that.
Super clean and potent sound here. I like this a lot.

Dan, this is a very tastefully done track. I particularly like when the high vocal type sound kicks in around 1:20.
From a recording point of view I'm impressed how balanced it sounds . . . on my monitors those tricky mid range frequencies are most pleasing.

From the intro through the first 3 minutes this track is fresh and unpredictable.
I like the glissando in the bass line, not overdone, just right.
Considering that you started by messing around one afternoon with this, it turned out very well, your wealth of creativity really shines here.

I notice on the bandcamp site it's tagged as "edm" (Electronic Dance Music ?) is this a new genre for you ?

Thank you for the kind words! I've really been focusing on the mixing part of this craft and I'm glad the results are starting to show. Glad you like that bass! As I mentioned above, it was a tough nut to crack, for me.

I tag 'em like I see 'em. I don't stick to any genre, as you can tell if you've heard my other stuff. But this sounded "dance-y" to me and I felt it had a EDM quality to it. How would you tag it?

    All the best,

Thank you Mark! I think I'm finally getting the hang of that SSL bundle. It took me a while before I realized you only have to turn the knobs a tiny bit to get big changes, lol. I also added a couple of EQ's that have really helped me get a handle on some things that I was struggling with. Fabfilter's Pro-Q is really great to work with once you wrap your head around it.

What's that synth used in the beginning, and how is it panned back and fourth?

Not sure what "Rob Papen's Blue II" is? But I enjoyed your recording. I really like the lush synths used in the different freq spectrum, and the choir sounding voices. Again, not sure if this was just tracks you mixed, or some sounds you created. Either way, I thought it was pretty good for the genera. Good job Dano.

Blue II is the second version VST synthesizer from Rob Papen. It really is a an awesome sounding synth. At the very beginning (the first 2 seconds), I took a snippet of the synth's audio after I bounced it, reversed it, added reverb, reversed it again (thanks Lynn!), then used a filter to generate the stutter effect and Waves H-Delay for the ping pong. After that, it is all Blue II, Omnisphere, Z3ta, Kontakt and my Triton. It's the first time I've had to load multiple instances of Omnisphere to get all the patches I needed, lol.

The vocal comes from Realivox Blue. Lots of blueness in this song. Realivox Blue is a Kontakt library of a singer recorded singing vowels, consonants and transitions between syllables. You create what she sings by typing phrases phonetically (for the most part). Lots of potential there, but it can be tricky to get the results you want.

I'll take it as a compliment that you thought I mixed prerecorded tracks...

I'm out of my element here, but to me this just sounds lovely. You are obviously skilled at your craft, and I won't presume to give advice on mixing. Everything on this track is separated and audible, while still blending nicely with all the other sounds. I actually have a Pandora channel filled with New Age-y kind of stuff that sounds a tiny bit like "Fly Away," but I thought the point of the music was to disappear. Listening to this piece is an active - and enjoyable -- experience. I like it. Take it for what it's worth, coming as it does from an unreconstructed rocker.

Thank you Larry! Glad you enjoyed this!

Just another "+1"!    Very cool synth tune and every layer is mixed so clean and, well, "airy".

BTW, Miss Blue is working well for you.   I've only used her once so far and only for a few bars, so this makes me want to find a place for her in another tune.

Thanks Steve! She isn't easy to use, but once you get the hang of it, I think the results are pretty good. I'd like her sister to have a less operatic voice, but Blue will do for now :)

I will see the "lovely clarity" remarks and raise you a very nice mix. And what Larry said about you being very skilled at your craft. Nice work Dan.

Dan, I sat between my speakers for this and was rewarded with throbbing bass and percussion throughout.  I loved the various textures and the way you arranged them.  All in all, this is a sophisticated production that could not be any more professional.  Not bad for just fooling around.

    All the best,
    Lynn
