I picked up Modular, and a couple additional modules, about a week ago. This thing sounds great, and it is just plain fun. I don't think I've enjoyed exploring a soft-synth this much in ages. I haven't been as confused - or challenged - by a soft-synth in a long time, but I consider these to be benefits!

No brainer at that price as long as you like fiddling. If you have a grounding in analog synths its not that hard to get your head around.
Remember its a pretty powerful effect unit too. Here is a tip I posted on setting it up for side chaining http://forum.cakewalk.com/Side-Chaining-in-Softube-Modular-m3770085.aspx
That is a simple scenario but once those signals are available for routing all sorts is possible.

One caveat; You are probably going to want to add some of the extra modules eventually, there is further GAS potential.

So, we Focursite customers got a coupon that allows us to pay 50 cents more.  Brilliant!

Everyplugin is even less. Normally $39 is a good price but not during the current Softube sale.

Not for me.  It's iLok so I don't know if I can put it on two systems.  You can never have enough synths, my VST folders says you have enough and if you were a mother some of my VSTs would place child abandonment charges against me.  My reply would be I didn't know you were my child.  I've got something like this similar on Reason I haven't messed with it yet.  My last synth came with a Waves bundle.  I'm done but I can't seem to resist buying Hideaway Studio products if they release a new one. It seems like there is no shortage of people cranking out stuff on Massive, Sylenth, and Spire.  If you have Reaktor, do you really need this?

If you like sound design and are prepared to get down and dirty with a totally modular virtual Eurorack synth yes. If you want loads of presets and something that sounds good straight out of the box, no.

I like creating unusual routings and combinations of modules. As I mentioned in an earlier post it also makes a versatile effects synth for processing audio. With imagination and experimentation you can come up with sounds no other virtual analog can produce.

A drawback for some people is by adhering closely to emulating the Eurorack format, it has the same limitations as the hardware, if this is a issue Reaktor or Tassman may be more suitable. (but both in my view have a much longer learning curve.)

Unlike the hardware you can have several instances of a module in use without having to buy more units. Massive configurations can prove a drain on PC resources. Getting to know the utility modules is the key to moving beyond conventional configurations.

An alternative is the VCV rack http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3660413 but this is not a VST and therefore less easy to integrate into you DAW. I find Modular's DAW sync module very useful as it enables you to clock sequencers and Sample and Hold etc. from the DAW.

I thought that one of the few advantages of iLok was you could use it on many different systems, just move the iLok key?

That said, I just use the computer based activation as I only need it on one PC.

I agree with the Reaktor statement and congratulate you on the Hideaway exception. Well done.
