Footsteps in The Hall

Here is something totally different. And perhaps a bit refreshing.

In this tune..... only one VST was used..... for the upright bass.  Everything else is live.

One vocal track, and 3 acoustic tracks featuring the Taylor 314 miked up close on lead, and out at 18 to 24 inches on the 2 strumming tracks.

I wanted to get your thoughts on this singer songwriter song.

It's a song about loosing someone you love dearly.

I was thinking about Philip and what he must be going through as I was mixing this song.....

Philip.... this is dedicated to you and your family.

The song is called Footsteps in the Hall, written by Bishop/Hartley

http://www.soundclick.com...34&songID=11196884

Something in your smile, made me feel alright
When you held me close, you lit up the night.
Memories are like watercolor paintings left out in the rain,
A fading glimpse of dreams from yesterday

I've got you right here in my memories
Locked inside these four paper covered walls
I've got you right here in my memories
Listening for your footsteps in the hall

Your pictures on the wall, They just smile out at me.
I remember the day, we hung them there.
The scarf you really loved, and used to wear
Lies folded and forgotten on the chair

I've got you right here in my memories
Locked inside these four paper covered walls
I've got you right here in my memories
Listening for your footsteps in the hall

I'm still listening for your footsteps in the hall

Thanks

Biabdude: I did not want the upright bass to be too loud. If you are listening on good cans or nice monitors you can hear it.... I intentionally rolled it off and kept the levels low.

I'm glad you think it's one of the better tunes I've done..... I think so too.

Hi Herb. Phillip is such a nice guy out here and although I don't know exactly what's going on I can get the jist from your post and my thoughts are with him and his family.
This is one the best songs I've heard in years lyrically like this. The words are simple and really beautiful. The Willie weariness of your voice delivers them with feeling. The Taylor sounds great. I don't listen to too much SS stuff these days but I haven't felt a song like this since Clapton's "Circus left town"

Great song, Herb! I hear  the bass just fine on my PC speaks with sub. The mix is beautiful and that Taylor really sounds sweet. Did you stereo mic the strummed part, clone it, or play it live twice? Did you use the big Rode mic on it?

Rhyno: Philip and his family had a tragic event recently.  Thank you for the kind words on the lyrics. I'm glad you "felt" this song...that was the point.

Scotty: NT2-A was used for all parts.... played the strumming twice.  Thanks for the comments on the mix.

The Rode mics do a nice job for sure. I have an NT-1000 and a matched pair of NT-5's that all sound great on acoustic guitars. If you have another mic, you might want to try stereo miking sometime with one pointed at the 12th fret and one pointed to the area just behind the bridge. It gives an awesome result.

I'll have to consider that.... when I get another condenser mic.

    In the meantime.

I just posted a slightly tweeked new version.

Nothing major.... a word or two changed, different phrasing on a place, and I fixed a few lead licks that needed to be different.

I also popped in a few EQ's on the guitars to do some low end cut... get rid of the slight boominess I was hearing.

I also pulled the vox down a few db to make it set in the mix a bit more.

    K heard it now.
Herb great job!  Nice song with nice singing and playing.  I like the guitar licks.  The mix and production were good as well.

If I was to give any suggestions I would say it needs some more low end.  Maybe the Bass turned up a bit, I realize you said you mixed it that way for a reason so if you are happy with it then that is all that matters.

    Nice song, thanks for posting

Well I can't add much to the comments that have already been made.  Another great acoustic song that I have found on the forum today.

Sounds a bit like Willy Nelson.

The bass you couldb't pick it being a VST, that's a sweet trick.

    Great Job Peace Ben

Mike:Grant:Ben:BIABDude: I decided to do something more acoustic then in the past. More of a singer/songwriter style.   I thoroughly enjoyed writing and recording this, so I might look to do more SS stuff.

The bass.... well I almost didn't even put a bass on this, and then tried an acoustic bass.... the problem with turning one of those up is the booming that accompanies it. So it's very low on purpose. with a nice sub or some nice cans it is very present.

    Thanks for listening and commenting.

A lot of the credit for this has to go to Pat, my co-writer. I sent her some very sketchy lines for the first verse, and she came back with some brilliant stuff. I took what she wrote, butchered it by throwing my lines in there and ...well.... this is what happened as a result.

That's gonna be a tough one to top..... but I will try my best.

Best tune I have heard yet from you, Herb. Loved your sining approach.

    One suggetion:
get rid of almost all the reverb. The song doesn't have any warts to cover over.

Geeari & Gpima: man, I'm glad you liked this song.

I really enjoyed going back to the basics ... mainly just  a guitar and vocal..... the most basic song style.

This song is probably one of my favorites too. Writing this with Pat was a total blast.

I love the creative process..... it's like a Zen thing.

agree with several commentators; Herb i often can't get past the shiny BIAB sound of your stuff, but this is so much better sounding than those songs, a fantastic performance both instrumentally and especially vocally, and a perfect sentiment to express to Philip at this time...love it and without a doubt my favourite tune of yours to date.
