@DoktorAvalanche - Thanks for the update from the horses mouth! I don't suppose they mentioned what might have changed? I don't assume any drivers will work on any OS.

Nope... They were very mysterious... Maybe they've just started looking into it as 3.6 has only just been released... I suspect they are only going to start looking at it once they get the RTM. Many manufacturers have that policy (only a few early birds catch the worm I notice).

Yes, it's well known that the early OS worm can have sharp teeth. Most of the vendors I've seen are saying the same thing. On the other hand, all of the software I've installed on 10 hasn't even required compatibility settings changes to install and function properly, possible because 10's OS version API seems to report itself as 8.1. This bodes well for folks who want to upgrade and don't want to wait for official drivers (like me.)

Microsoft just updated their update on the Windows Insider policy with respect to licensing. The only real clarification here is that they explicitly state that once you opt out of the program, you have to qualify for the free upgrade offer or pay for a license. “I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well. “I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.

Well, it is Windows 10 for free, right? And you can opt out of updates and stay on a specific build if that's what you want to do, but that's not really the point of the program. But to your point, yeah, I wouldn't recommend anyone bind Insider program builds to a machine that they depend on for a stable DAW, those folks just aren't prepared to spit in the face of death.

Me too, and it's out today after releasing 10158 yesterday. Microsoft's getting as good as Cakewalk! To all insiders, build 10158 is an incredible build. Most of the debug code has been removed and it's extremely fast, smooth and responsive and there's a great deal of polish that's been applied since 10130, my most recent experience. Sonar and my venerable 10 year old MOTU 8pre have been functioning flawlessly. I'm really beginning to like Windows 10 quite a lot. Now some of the utility apps are kind of lame and dumbed down (Mail, you know who I'm talking about!) but its a great build overall. Even the new browser, Microsoft Edge works great and I am a skeptic on that thing. So now I'm installing 10159 and hope to have just as sunny a report as I did for 10158. The saga continues.

I haven't tried X2 or other pre- membership versions but to my mind the only roadblock you might find would be in your interfaces' drivers.

X2 is Win 8/8.1 compatible so I would expect it to be Win 10 compatible.

I had some issues with audio on 10162, no audio devices were seen but ASIO worked. I uninstalled all the audio drivers, rebooted and reinstalled and it's working well now. This is a pretty polished build compared to even 10130. And it seems quite a lot faster than 10130 as well.

Build 10130 totally trashed my old DAW that I was testing Win 10 on. To the point that when I tried to use the ISO to do a clean install, it kept on trying to install on my E drive. But that's beta software. I did managed to rebuild the PC but had to go back and wipe the drive, reformat it and install XP, then the Win 7 upgrade. I'm going to try to take the opportunity to put in some larger HD that I salvaged from another old PC and give it a go with build 10162. Cheers, jayson

I did a clean install with ISO of build 10130 on my main machine last week. It sure wasn't without its issues but it did install okay and I've been upgrading to each new build as it came out. 10130 was pretty shaky for sure, to the extent that I professed my nervousness in this thread about MS being able to pull off RTM this month. At this point I think I was being pessimistic. While 10162 isn't perfect, I'm feeling a lot better about the prospects of a quality RTM release. I think you're wise to skip to 10162, it's the most polished build so far and it's darn fast too.

By the way, the issues I've had throughout the preview program with the various releases have been numerous and very frustrating (I keep muttering "I signed up for this, I signed up for this..."), and I've posted about 50 feedback items to the program. Sonar, however, has worked pretty flawlessly throughout the experience on even the crankiest of builds, and while my mail or my browser may have crashed uncontrollably, Sonar kept pumping right along, and my creaky old MOTU firewire interface has worked great even with the in-the-box firewire drivers (no legacy driver installs.) For DAW's this OS is looking pretty promising. I'm looking forward to seeing some DAW benchmark numbers.

I ended up updating from Win 7 instead of using the ISO and just noticed that it's installing build 10130! Hope it doesn't brick my PC again. I though I was on the fast ring but think I might be on the slow? That might be why. Cheers, jayson

Finally worked but had to jump through a number of hoops. Right after the blue Windows appears and it started to install, I kept on getting a blank screen. I figure it was frozen and just left it be but after about 50 minutes, I heard my PC reboot and the installation completed. Still on build 10300 and I was on the slow ring so changed it to the fast and will wait for the next update. Hopefully, these issues won't be a problem come July 29th as if this was my main DAW, I would really be upset. Cheers, jayson

Good to hear you got it going! You should see the update right away if you're fast ring. I think I read that they are pushing 10162 to the slow ring.
