Free Windows 10 for those who spit in the face of death

If you are not averse to risk, want to be part of the Windows development process and get free Windows for pretty much ever after, there is a program for you.

Microsoft updated its policy on free Windows 10 installs for Windows Insider members. The Windows Insider program makes prelease builds of Windows available to members on a regular basis and allows you to provide feedback to the development teams and program managers on new features and fixes as they roll out of the dev shops. The payback for this considerable risk is that you get Windows 10 free for as long as you are a member of the program.

Microsoft also announced that the program will continue after RTM for follow-on releases into the foreseeable future so this looks to be a great way to help drive the direction of the product and get freebie Windows for a good long time. Check out the program details at https://insider.windows.com/

Here are the basics:

If you are running a Windows 10 instance as part of the insider's program, you will receive the RTM version as part of a regular "flight" update through Windows Update. There is no charge for the OS for Windows Insiders. Their are only two caveats; first, it is an update rather than a clean install, but you will be able to download an ISO file to do a clean install after the update if you desire. Second, you need to be registered as a Windows Insider with a Microsoft online account on the PC that you will be installing the preview.

So in practical terms, this all means that to get the Windows 10 RTM update you have to have a preview version installed on your machine, connected to the Insider program with a valid Microsoft online ID. Assuming you want to do all that, you will:

1. Get a Microsoft online account (mine is through live.com but Hotmail, outlook and MSN accounts work too from what I gather.)
2. Sign up to be a Windows 10 Insider (google it, it's right at the top of the list)
3. Make an image backup and a recovery disk (just in case, right?)
4. At the Windows Insider hub, choose to install the preview
5. The preview build will install through Windows Update

Please refer to the Insider home page for details on what the program is all about.

This program clearly isn't the thing for you if you depend on a stable OS platform for your sanity or livelihood, but for those of us who do this for the grins, it's a great way to participate and get something for it. YMMV, etc.

I should also tell you that I am not an employee of Microsoft (though I used to be) and I have no affiliation with the company and receive no compensation for anything from anybody connected with Microsoft for anything whatsoever. Full disclosure, I do own a tiny software development company that targets Windows platforms.

Good luck!

I've been using it in a virtual machine for development but haven't tried it on my DAW box yet. It's good to hear that you've had success with it. I'm looking to install it this week.

Re: Free Windows 10 for those who spit in the face of death 2015/06/23 23:51:37 (permalink)
I just moved to Windows 10 on my main machine, build 10130. Aside from Hyper-V breaking the boot sequence, everything else went great, but I did have to switch to VirtualBox for my virtual machines.

Sonar also runs fantastically well and my MOTU 8pre works very well, the drivers installed without any issues at all. My system has an NVIDIA GT430 display adapter and the driver installer would run but after rebooting it was still using the default VGA drivers. Fortunately NVIDIA has made Windows 10 drivers available on their support site, and these installed and worked fine.

One huge plus - on Windows 8.1 my EVGA X58 Classified III system with i7/980 and 24GB of RAM ran with a DPC latency average of around 470us with spikes over 1000 as reported by LatencyMon. Part of this is due to all the other crap I do with the machine so I just accept the hit, but after installing Windows 10 my machine is averaging 110us with no spikes at all. Now this could be due to something being broken in my 8.1 system configuration, but whatever it is, I'll take it.

I'm on the fast ring for updates so I'll probably have some real issues as we close on RTM, so creating system restore points are a bit of religion for me right now, but I'm really liking the responsiveness. I'm currently working on a tune while a virtual machine running Windows 8.1 is installing 128 updates via Windows Update and while Visual Studio 2015 RC is installing on my Windows 10 OS. Not a recommended best practice! A few audio engine dropouts here and there (no wonder!) but it's pretty damned smooth.

I'll post more once I get the thing in a stable state.

I have been getting and testing the pre-release versions for quite a while.  I have the 10130 build installed and have Sonar Platinum and my recording hardware installed (I don't use it for audio production just testing).
I am also active on the Windows 10 forum.

This will work if you do not have an upgrade eligible version of Windows already. The insider version is available to people who do not have a licensed copy of Win 7 or 8. So if you get the free pre-release version, and then convert it to a fully licensed version of Windows 10, you have gotten it with no $$$ cost to you. The free upgrade from Win 7 or 8 implies that you paid for Win 7 or 8 at some point.

Ahh, so for people still on Vista or XP or OSX.

or for people building their own system that need an OS??

The Insider program is for anyone that wants to participate, regardless of what OS you're on, but yeah, if you're on OSX, Vista or XP this is a way to get 10 free without having to upgrade to 7, 8 or 8.1 first. You can download the ISO, make a bootable DVD or USB device from it and you're off to the races.

I should point out that it can be a frustrating experience especially if your machine is used for a variety of purposes. For example, I run multiple virtual machines supporting my software development business and use the host OS for development and as my DAW machine, so the surface area of the OS I hit on a day to day basis is quite a bit larger than if you did just one thing with the box, so the opportunities for issues and show stoppers is much larger. I have in fact run into several issues with Hyper-V and found some interesting issues with using system restore points and "modern apps".

That being said, Sonar Platinum runs great using my MOTU 8pre. No issues with plugins, drivers or latency whatsoever, so if your machine is primarily used for that, you should be fine.

Edit: If you go this route, I'd strongly encourage you to use the Windows Feedback tool to post problems and change requests, and to periodically browse other issue reports and upvote the ones you agree with. Microsoft does read this stuff and does respond to them with changes to the OS (although they don't reply directly through the tool, that's not what it's for.)

The build number disappeared from the lower right corner of my desktop. And now the System page says Win 10 Pro Insider Preview. It used to have the build number there as well as the old "name". I must have received an update?

Mine still has the build number.  There are two lines, your bottom line must have gotten covered up

Mine shows:
Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview
Evaluation Copy Build 10130

I just (now) checked for updates and there are no updates.

However, build 10130 changed the identification on my multi-boot OS selection panel (I have a triple boot  Win7/8.1/10 each on separate hard drives).  It used to show Win 10 as Pre Release, it now just shows "Windows 10".

Re: Free Windows 10 for those who spit in the face of death 2015/06/26 03:08:44 (permalink)
It may well be that some of you are seeing updates that others aren't. After install, you can go to the Windows Update page and toward the bottom there is a combo box that allows you to choose the slow ring or the fast ring for update frequency. With the slow ring you receive updates to the OS infrequently, typically when a set of updates are more solidly baked. The fast ring exposes you to more potential problems but delivers updates much more quickly, sometimes every couple of days or so. The cool thing about the fast ring is that they often try out new feature and UI designs that don't always get approved for the slow ring based on feedback from users through the feedback tool.

As we get close to RTM I suspect we'll see fewer updates and the ones we do see will be less experimental in nature and more with a more release quality stability. I was on the fast ring till I moved my Windows 10 work from a virtual machine to my main machine, at which point I wimped out and set it to slow ring. Once I have a bit of confidence (and get some work done) I'll switch back. :)

I'm on the "fast" setup.  There have been reports of leaked versions of later builds but no official release by Microsoft.
With the release date a month away, we may not see any additional (official) preview versions.  PC companies, such as Dell, HP, etc are probably already working on the RTM release for new PC's.

Woo hoo! I'm a bit nervous about that because I think the lastest insider release (10130) is still pretty rough around the edges. I hope they've smoothed 'em out by then.

You have every right to be nervous. I personally would not touch it with a barge poll on my DAW installation until new year. Major bugs will be ironed out and driver support will be much better by then.

On my primary system, I have a dual boot Win 7/Win 8.1 (on separate SSD's).  They have the identical Sonar setup including extra add-ons such as Ozone 5, POD Farm 2, Antares, etc.  As it is now, I can use either and Sonar works exactly the same.  I'm going to upgrade the 8.1 to 10 when its available and start using it as my Production.  If there is a problem, I can fall back to the Win 7 install.  But, testing I've done with Win 10 Preview releases, I haven't run into any issues with Sonar.

There still will be major bugs upon release. There always is. Generally takes around six months for everybody's issues to be sorted. Been like that since Windows 9x and perhaps earlier (memory fails me).

The insider version is available to people who do not have a licensed copy of Win 7 or 8.

This reminds me of an old adage that Microsoft seems to now be living by: Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. ;)

..for you! (And probably many others). Looks forward to pasting the usual complaint threads on here within the first month of release date. It's the same old story on every release...

Also note let's be more specific here, you don't have the final release installed... Last minute surprises often happen by design..

Re: Free Windows 10 for those who spit in the face of death 2015/06/28 18:17:31 (permalink)
I going to be forced into W10 but so far I like it and don't have to replace hardware.
A couple years ago I bought 3 Windows Anytime Upgrades from a vendor to have all machines W7 Pro.  A year later that vendor was sued by MS.  They are gone. Some people have bought multiple licenses of Office from this vendor and have trouble getting 2nd activations. My WAUs happen to be OEM.  So with W10 I will have unquestionable licenses.
Windows 10 is great.  I haven't really messed with it as a DAW but everything opens up.  My concern is where everything else is at for tweaking. It's not hard to find.  You find your apps in the start menu. They are listed in letter order with a letter heading. You don't need Classic Start Menu.  I do believe it has virtual desktops. Contana is annoying when it says "search windows or the web" always does the latter.  Spartan is a dumbed down browser.
It also has the same virtual machine in W8 Pro.
FW devices work.  Legacy audio interfaces work with W7 drivers.

My only concern is backward compatibility on games.

Compatibility seems to be a pretty strong point with Windows 10, I haven't found anything that doesn't run well yet, but I'm not a gamer. My concern is about basic stability. I'm on build 10130 right now, which is the latest slow ring build and there are still some fairly rough edges, particularly with Hyper-V which I use a lot. Still haven't been able to make it work and have had to use system restore points more in the last week than I ever have to recover from issues with that.

My machine is pretty powerful but it's an aging machine and I suspect that the issues I'm having are related to some niggling hardware incompatibilities. It's the edge cases that a new release typically has trouble with, but I still have hope that the major defects are ironed out before ship.

Like I said, Sonar Platinum (Everett) has been rock solid on 10, a real bright spot for me throughout the Insider program.

You have every right to be nervous. I personally would not touch it with a barge poll on my DAW installation until new year. Major bugs will be ironed out and driver support will be much better by then.

I don't believe there have been any major driver model changes in 10 but I could be wrong, perhaps video drivers supporting DirectX 12 maybe. I suspect that most issues folks will have will be installers that fail due to OS version checks.

I love Win 10 too! I've been using it as primary os since november and tried it in Virtual machine even earlier. think it was at the launch of 10 preview. I've been , editing and mixing on it and it has been stable all tone way. I am on the fast ring as well. I think the next updates will be more of security and bug fixes than features updates.
I tried the latest one for Windows phone too. But it lack some futures I need so I reinstalled WP 8.1. looking forward to the next one that should come in July.

@Kevinwal I spoke to Focusrite apparently saffire drivers will come for windows 10. Not sure if windows 8 drivers will work or not maybe somebody can confirm. So it seems that ASIO drivers will be released esp for windows 10 although Win 8 drivers are likely to work. There may be a few hurdles to overcome.. Anyway I don't think it's a cert all drivers will work, certainly you shouldn't assume it will..
